Q: Youre trying to getCumberland wrestlingback up as a program.Where do you think thatstarts?

A: In the practice roomreally. You just have to go atit every day, dont slack off, just keep it going, thats all itis. Just give it all you got inthe room and put your bestfoot forward.

Q: What do you think ofwrestling being eliminat-ed as an Olympic sport?

A: The Olympics taking outwrestling, its just bad. Itsbeen in there since the be-ginning. Its just kind ofmind-boggling to take outwrestling, which is honestly

one of the toughest sportsthere is. For me, to takewrestling out of the Olym-pics is just crazy.

Q: So are you now goingto take up the ModernPentathlon (which com-bines fencing, equestrian, target shooting, runningand swimming), the sportmany consider to havebeen kept in the Olympicsover wrestling?

A: I mean, I dont even knowwhat that is, which is kind ofbad. If theyre going to takeout something, they shouldprobably take out somethingthat nobody knows about.

Cumberland Regional HighSchools Joe Roman has beena senior leader on a young, rebuilding Colts team with anew head coach this year inJustin Martin. The team, at8-14, has had an up-and-down season, and Roman, asenior 132-pounder, is 12-11.He recently spoke with TheMat Pack about the year andsome other wrestling topics.

QUESTION: You have anew head coach in JustinMartin, what does he

bring to the table andhow does he compare toformer coach CarmineDavis?

ANSWER: He brings a lot ofdifferent things to the team. Its just a big switch. Carmineran things a little differently.Carmine was a good coach, but Martin helps us out inareas where we really needit.

Q: What has this seasonbeen like to go through?

A: Were a young team, wegot a lot of guys on the teamthat never even wrestled

before, so were just tryingto get them adjusted to thesystem and get them wherethey need to be. For us olderguys, its just about helpingthem along as much as wecan.

Q: Youre a senior goinginto your last districts, whats it like to thinkabout how the tourna-ment is just a week away?

A: Its a little nerve (wrack-ing) but Im going to go inthere open-minded. I justhave to do the best I can, thats all I can say.

    THE INSIDE STUFF

Delseas Luke Fedechko (right) grapples with Deptfords Anthony Rizzolo in the

Tri-County Conference Tournament in 2008. The tournament lasted just four years due tomarquee matchups like this becoming less common. STAFF PHOTO/CODY GLENN

Last season, DelseasCurt Delia becamethe first four-time

    Tri-County ConferenceTournament champion.

Hell remain the onlyone despite the protestsof the one wrestler whocould have matched thatfeat.

I was a little upset be-cause I wanted to be thenext four-timer, said Del-sea senior 152-pounderJohn Hennelly, whoearned three TCC titles. Its a big tournament in away, but then its not.

After a solid run of fouryears, the TCC Tourna-ment is no more. It wasscrapped before this sea-son began and teams filledthe last Saturday of Janu-ary with dual meets in itsplace.

The tournament wasthe only semblance ofsuch a showcase in SouthJersey while county andconference championsare routinely crowned inthe northern part of thestate.

I just think its tradi-tion as far as other parts ofthe state, Delsea athleticdirector Steve Iles said. And it seems its not justwrestling, you see it inother sports as well. It justseems like a bigger deal.

With the greater popu-lation density and teamsin close proximity oftensplit from each other in

terms of conference, dis-trict and region align-ment, the tournamentshave been a primarysource of bragging rightsand rivalries in North andCentral Jersey.

You dont have that(down here), Iles said.We tried to start that, andthere are some road-blocks along the way, andone of those is people whodont want to see the sameopponent two or threetimes, especially your bet-ter wrestlers.

    Because every team in

the TCC Tournament wasalso in Region 8, most ofthe finals were region fi-nal or semifinal previews,at best. To avoid losingseeding criteria or show-

ing too much to an oppo-nent before the individualstate tournament, teamswere leaving wrestlershome or even bumpingaround weight classes.

Its widely believed if aSouth Jersey conferenceor county was spread overmultiple region bound-aries, a tournament wouldstand a better chance ofsurvival.

I liked it because ofhow well it was run andhow competitive it was,Delsea coach Greg Saw-yer said. But then the flip

side of it is, its nice not tosee the same kids over andover again. A lot of thesekids weve already seen, two or three times. Threeor four times is too many.

Theoretically, Delsea, which shares a district, region and conferencewith Kingsway could havehad individuals wrestle asmany as six times in a sin-gle season.

There are also far moretournaments in the begin-ning of the season and

many teams prefer totravel to increase the di-versity in their schedules.Buena has long competedin the Hunterdon CentralTournament, Delsea andSt. Augustine are regularsat the Brick MemorialMustang Classic and oth-er South Jersey teamsventure to Pennsylvaniaand Virginia seeking dif-ferent competition.

Some coaches havealso chosen to focus on theteam aspect of the wres-tling season and disliketoo many individual, regu-

lar-season tournaments.I want to wrestle the

best teams around, andthats just taking awaymatches, St. Augustinecoach Bill Ward said.

The Shore Conferenceholds a team tournament, but that has fallen out offavor in recent years. TheShore Conference, howev-er, is larger than both theTri-County Conferenceand Cape-AtlanticLeague. Its also brokeninto six divisions as op-

posed to three in the TCCand two in the CAL. Out-side of football, no SouthJersey conference is di-vided into more than fourdivisions for any sport.

So while the sting oflosing South Jerseys onlyconference or countytournament is still fresh, its unlikely a new one willcome along any time soon.
