that much pressure because Iwanted to do this good mysenior year, and Ive exceeded allmy expectations. Theres not

going to be that much pressurefor me until I get to the statetournament, I think.

Q: Do you think this team hasa better chance at gettingover the hump and winning astate title this year as op-posed to last year?

A: Its tough because last yearwe had a lot of great wrestlers(like Curt Delia). He was agreat leader, he always pushedus. I think we have anothergreat chance this year to make itand win the whole thing. I thinkHigh Point is beatable. We sawthem at Brick, they have holes,we have holes, everybody hasholes. I think we have a goodshot at winning it this year, because we put in so much hardwork and we deserve it.

Q: How do you feel aboutwrestling anywhere from 170to 195?

A: My coaches always make funof me when I wrestle 195. Itstough wrestling bigger kidsbecause theyre stronger, buttheyre a lot slower. Ill wrestle95 and get the job done. Ill dowhatever I need to do for myteam. I definitely enjoy wrestling70 and 82 a lot more, but I dowhat I have to do.

    Q: Whats your Super Bowlprediction?

A: I want to say the Ravens,17-13, I hope they win because

    of Ray Lewis.

Delsea Regional High SchoolsDylan Dobzanski is currentlyundefeated (24-0) and garneringinterest from college coaches. He played just one season ofhigh school football and helpedthe Crusaders win a state title, and hes getting scholarshipoffers for that sport too. But fornow hes focused on helpingDelsea reach the Group II statefinals and win a title. He recentlyspoke to The Mat Pack aboutwrestling and football.

QUESTION: You played foot-ball for the first time in highschool this past fall, did thathelp you out with wrestlingor set you back at all?

A: A little bit of both in a sense,it got me into some sort ofshape but it was also badbecause I havent had anyathletic breaks since the begin-ning of summer, my body isstarting to wear down a littlebit. (But) Its definitely been agreat ride, Im glad I came outand played this year.

Q: Do you regret not playingfootball sooner?

A: Not really, because I hadnever been that big. Freshmanyear, I wrestled 119, I was 5-foot-2.

Q: Which sport would youlike to pursue in college?

A: I think wrestling. Its close tomy heart. And its 10 times morerewarding because of all thehard work I put in my whole life.Theres nothing like the feelingof winning a match.

Q: Being undefeated this farinto the season, does it addconfidence or pressure?

A: I dont think it adds thatmuch pressure, but it does giveme confidence knowing Ihavent lost yet because I havewrestled some tough kids at theBrick tournament. We wrestledBound Brook and St. Peters(Prep). I dont think its added

    THE INSIDE STUFF

Vinelands Zach Nealis bites into an apple before a recent practice. Fruits are a popularchoice for wrestlers watching their weight during the season. STAFF PHOTO/CHARLES J. OLSON

Wrestling isnt justa sport, its a life-style.

For proof, look no fur-ther than the differencebetween what a wrestlereats for lunch during theoffseason and what he con-

sumes if anything at all during the season.Maintaining a certain

weight is a way of life forhigh school wrestlers andmost have become expertsin rationing portions andthe timing of their meals.

Few wrestlers agreecompletely on the properway to diet throughout theseason. Some opt forsmaller portions of whatthey normally eat whileothers go for low-fat foodsthey only consume be-tween December andMarch.

I dont eat lunch, I usu-ally eat a big breakfast and

that fills me up for thewhole day, said St. Augus-tines Tom Gattinella, whowrestles at 120 pounds. Then when I get home, Iusually eat steak, chicken, and a lot of water. Every-thing is portioned. I usual-ly eat the same meals, justportioned out.

Most wrestlers famous-ly twiddle their thumbsduring lunch while the sea-son is in high gear. Typical-ly, eating during the day isa luxury reserved for up-per weights who arentcutting weight or timeswhen a match is still a fewdays away.

If its lunch, I justmake it fruit, itll fill meup, it hydrates me too,Gattinella said.

Gattinella, who stands5-foot, 5-inches, said its agood idea to eat nutritiousfood, rather than eating alot then working extrahard to work it off.

Fast food, itll sit inyour stomach and youregoing to wrestle bad, Gat-tinella said. Thats why Ifeel like if I get a good din-ner, it fuels me for the restof the day and the nextday.

While hes smart aboutwhat he eats to maintain

his weight, Gattinella isntas strict as one of his team-mates.

Since my freshmanyear Ive had a schedule ofwhat I want to eat, when,Prep senior 170-pounderTyler Sentman said. Ihave it portioned out, so Idont even have to worryabout it.

Sentman also stressedthe importance of beingsmart and eating healthyrather than just eatingless.

As long as youre cy-cling it, your body gets

used to it and its not thatbad, Sentman said. Youdont fluctuate a lot ofweight, you only go up ordown a few pounds.

During the season,Sentman said he misses

whats normally a staple inhis diet Chinese food.He replaces it with some-thing significantly moreAmerican.

Every single day forlunch I eat peanut butterand jelly, Sentman said.

Not everyone has adrastically different dietduring the winter monthsthough.

Even when I was cut-ting a lot of weight, I stillate what I wanted, Buenasenior 126-pounder BillyWard said. Maybe a littleless or smaller portions.

Ward said the key tomaintaining weight is

more about shedding thepounds in the wrestlingroom and less about starv-ing in the hours beforeweigh-ins. Since wrestlingafter fasting for 24 hoursjust to make weight isnt

ideal, Ward suggests get-ting down earlier, thenmaintaining.

A lot of it is how muchyoure working out andhow much youre sweat-ing, Ward said. I have aweight I want to be the daybefore a match. If youredown earlier in the week, its nice.

The Mat Pack askedabout wrestlers favoritein-season snack foods andfruits were the popularchoice.
