thing he says.Q: What were your firstthoughts when you heardhe was named the coach(and took over for JoeMelchiore)?A: He coached me when I waslittle, so I kind of knew him. Iknew our practices would bea lot different and I wasexcited to see what theywould be like.Q: You have a good work-ing partner in James Ben-nett. Whats the advantageto having a good workoutpartner as opposed to justrolling around with coach-

es?A: We push each other everyday. We go into the roomand we dont want to lose.We just constantly are bothworking to get better and itpays off so much more in thelong run.Q: You arent wrestlingBuena this year (in a dualmeet due to coach Wardsson, Billy Ward, being asenior for the Chiefs). Areyou disappointed?A: I understand where itscoming from. That was al-ways a cool rivalry matchbecause everyone was there, but I understand why werenot doing that.

St. Augustine Prep seniorTyler Sentman is enjoying anice senior year so far. The170-pounder is 19-2 and acaptain on a Hermits teamthat hasnt lost in New Jerseyyet, is eying a Cape-AtlanticLeague American Conferencetitle and a chance to wrestlefor a Non-Public A state title.Sentman, who is also a stand-

out student at the Prep, recently spoke with The MatPack about his season, hisgoals and other things sur-rounding the team.QUESTION: What is thepressure like on you withthe individual and teamgoals you have?ANSWER: I try not to reallythink about it. I want to try toput the team first and reachour team goals, to win a teamstate title. But then after ourteam goals are done with, Illfocus on my individual goals, which is making states andplacing in states.Q: Does anything changefor you when the season

switches from the teamseason to the individualseason?A: Its just more of a mindset,I dont really change any-thing.Q: You want to wrestle incollege, why?A: Its just something Ivedone since I was little.Q: What are your thoughtson first-year head coachBill Ward?A: I like him. Practices are alot different, but the wholeteam is in shape, and werenot getting tired at the endof matches, and were justworking hard every day.Everyone is buying into every-

    THE INSIDE STUFF

Millvillle coach Scott Stay works on a website that helps log his wrestlers records, weight classes and helps set up seeding for districts. STAFF PHOTO/CODY GLENN

Wrestling may bethe worlds oldestsport, but its not

    impervious to changes dueto technology.

Of course, all of thosetypes of amendments areoff the mats, and they play

more of an auxiliary role tothe sport rather than in-creasing takedowns andpin times. In fact, the inter-net has completelychanged the way teamsand wrestlers monitorweight loss as well as cre-ating an infinite databaseof information on oppo-nents.

While high schoolcoaches are now responsi-ble for significantly morework away from the wres-tling room, the changescertainly come with plentyof advantages.

I just have to clicksome buttons and now all

the district seeds go in,Millville coach Scott Staysaid. It calculates all thepoints for you. The nightbefore I go to the districtseeding meeting, I can goand see where everyone isgoing to be.

Stay is referring to theNational Wrestling Coach-es Association Scorebook. The website, nwca.org, isupdated by coachesthroughout the season andthe results are loggedautomatically. From thesystem, seeding for tour-naments can be deter-mined instantly.

    The site also provides

an easy scouting tool forcoaches since entire line-ups for teams are just amouse click away, com-plete with records andbout scores.

(Before) I bought ev-ery newspaper in SouthJersey, Stay said. Andwed cut out the boxscores, we photocopiedthem and we had a page forevery team in Region 7 and8. Thats how we did it. Idont know how otherschools did it. We called itour little black book.

Now, instead of compil-ing results, coaches canjust print out updated line-ups and then try to map outthat nights chess match.

    All of that information,

which is valuable to coach-es, wrestlers, college

scouts and the media, is apositive byproduct of whatwas formed as an attemptto increase the safety ofwrestlers cutting weight.

Initially, the systemwas a way to enter in theactual weight for eachwrestler following everyweigh-in. A system wasnecessary after theNJSIAA implemented thehydration testing and de-scent plans, which allowedwrestlers to only lose acertain amount of weightover a period of time. Toproperly monitor theweight loss, coaches en-tered all the informationinto the computer system.

The system was firstused in 2006, but became

mandatory in 2007. Coach-es who cried foul at the on-set have been treated togradual improvements tothe to the system overtime.

Its definitely gottenbetter and more stream-lined, Stay said.

But the process still re-quires time to complete, time some head coachesdont always have.

I usually dont havetime in the day to sit be-hind a computer, period,St. Augustine coach BillWard said.

Most head coaches as-sign an assistant coach tohandle most, if not all, of

the paperwork duties. Forthe Prep, its assistantAdam Shepperd, who isthe only one of the threemen in the Hermits cor-ner who work in theschool.

Its not basketball, where you just call in thescore, Ward said. Eachkid, you have to enter their

(individual bout) score. Itscertification, the weigh-insheet has to be done also. You have to put the weightin after the match into thesystem to do it the rightway.

And while some mightsay the extra work takesaway from the time coach-es can spend in the roominstructing, most agreethe load isnt that bad.

Its just time-consum-ing, Ward said. Just likeany kind of paperwork, aslong as you keep up on it,its not that bad.
