wrestling with for two years soIve been fine with it. I feelhealthy, Ill just get my sleep anddrink plenty of fluids and Ill feelgreat.

Q: What does working in agood room like Delseas dofor a wrestler?

A: It makes the kids so muchbetter, just because its Delsea, all these titles and everything. The coaches, theyre the toplevel, theyve all been to A.C.and stuff, they get us preparedand they have high goals for us.

Q: How does it feel to not becutting weight?

A: Its good. Im going to Wawaafter this and getting a pulledpork. It kind of stinks too, be-cause these kids are coming inmuch heavier, theyre losing alittle bit of weight, and Imstruggling to stay above 215. Butit doesnt really bother mebecause I was wrestling 285 allyear. I know I can handle it. But Ilove it, I love eating in front ofpeople.

Q: You were cutting a littleweight last year. Do you feeldifferent this year?

A: Mentally, Im a lot happier. For the heavier weights, itsmore of a mental thing. But forthe lower weights it takes moreof a physical toll. Its pretty bad

    down there.

Delsea Regional High SchoolsBryan Dobzanski is the top seedat 220 pounds. The undefeated

junior is the favorite of many towin a state title this weekend.Hes also a three-sport star atDelsea, excelling in football andas a pitcher in baseball. Herecently spoke with The MatPack about his tournament, histeam and his sports.

QUESTION: What are yourthoughts on being the No. 1overall seed?

ANSWER: Its definitely a lot ofpeople looking down on you, thinking theyre going to takethat first seed, beat you andupset you for the state title. Alot of people, community-wise,their hopes are on me, theyrethinking (Im) the top seed (I)should win this. So its a lot ofpressure, definitely.

Q: What are your thoughts onbeing undefeated?

A: I know I want to keep thestreak going. I want to finish thisseason undefeated. Then thepressure comes in because youdont want to lose it, and theresa target on your back becausepeople know youre undefeat-ed.

Q: Is baseball still your topsport?

A: Im having shoulder problemsand I broke my finger duringregions. Its going to be toughout there on the baseball fieldafter wrestling is done. But inthe moment, Im not thinkingabout baseball at all, Im allwrestling.

Q: How do you feel rightnow?

A: Ive wrestled with the (bro-ken) finger twice, I felt great, itdidnt really bother me, I taped

it up. The shoulder, Ive been

    THE INSIDE STUFF

Eight mats line the floor of Atlantic Citys Boardwalk Hall for the individual state championships, high schoolwrestlings biggest stage. GANNETT NEW JERSEY FILE PHOTO

    Over the first two

    weeks of the individ-ual tournament,

wrestlers have encoun-tered familiar surround-ings. The venues were highschool gymnasiums filledwith a typical-sized crowdand their opponents werewrestlers they most likelyhad seen before.

However, in AtlanticCity, a town of bright lightsand big dreams, every-thing is magnified.

The tournament is larg-er, the building is massiveand the competition is amine field of 20 or morewrestlers who have morethan 30 wins apiece.

The lights, the pres-sure, the eyes and the com-petition can either make orbreak a wrestler once theymake to the state tourna-ment in Boardwalk Hall.

Theres nothing elselike it, Delseas BryanDobzanski said. Just thecrowd gets you so excitedand everything, theresreally nothing like it. Icant wait to come back toit (tonight), just standing infront of the crowd, every-body looking down at meand wrestling, the crowdgetting thrilled, hearing allthe upsets.

More than any othertournament or match oranything else in highschool sports the state

    tournament requiresknowledge and experi-ence.

I know this time its alot less nerve wracking,Dobzanski said. Last year, the first match, I was pret-ty nervous about the wholething. But I got warmed upand into it and I just startedsome beating some really

    good kids.Hundreds of spotlights

shine down from the 120-foot ceilings and each take-down gets an enthusiasticcall of TWO! from thethousands of spectators.Even with as many as eightmats being used, one canthelp but think that all eyeson you.

Theres so many peo-ple watching you, Del-seas Dylan Dobzanski,Bryans cousin, said. Itsjust a great feeling. Youwant to show all those peo-ple what you can do.

Even if you have team-mates in Boardwalk Hallwarming up with you, thelogo on the uniform mat-ters a little less.

    Its all you, Buenas

Billy Ward said. You haveyour team singlet on,youve got your warmupon, but its you. When yourcoaches are in your corner, theyre not worried aboutanything else with yourteam. And thats how youhave to think about it. Imout here, Im going to rep-resent my school, but thisis for me.

And thats kind of whatmakes states unique. Ithink thats why every-body is so into it.

The wrestlers who farewell in Atlantic City are theones that can feed off theenergy.

All the fans, all the peo-ple, all the colleges there, itjust adds to the motiva-tion, Dylan Dobzanskisaid. Last year when Iwent in there, I was justlike, What am I doinghere? Thats what I wasthinking when I was wres-tling (eventual state cham-pion Johnny) Sebastianand he whooped my (butt). This year Im hoping itdoesnt make me more ner-vous, I hope it makes memore motivated.

But as exciting as itmay be to make it there, wrestling in the state tour-nament, especially thefirst time, can be over-whelming.

I think Im used to it,

    St. Augustine senior Tom

Gattinella said. The firstcouple of times, it got tome. It made me wrestletentative.

Of the 11 local wrestlerswho are in action thisweekend in the tourna-ment, five have experi-ence at states. Its up towrestlers like Gattinella, who is in his third statetournament, to help out theyounger guys, like sopho-more teammate JarredHodges, who is making hisfirst appearance.

Ill tell him, Just soakit all in, get used to it, be-cause hell be there twomore times, Gattinella

said. I got nervous myfirst time, so hell probablyget the same feeling.

With the level of compe-tition, first trips are oftenshort-lived though.

There are no scrubsdown there, you have tobring your A-game everymatch and you have to beon point with everythingyou do, Dylan Dobzanskisaid.

If youre just a little offyour game, that building, that crowd, those lightsand that opponent can beatyou.

Buenas Billy Ward, Timber Creeks Brandon Keller and

Camden Catholics T.J. Miller all became four-time regionalchampions last weekend, extending the list of South Jerseywrestlers to accomplish the feat to 20. It is the third time thearea had three four-time champions in the same year. In 2003,Camden Catholics Ed Giosa, Holy Cross Adam Cooney andOakcrests C.J. Mays accomplished the feat. Seven years later,Paulsboros Joey Duca, Easterns Anthony Baldosaro andEasterns Preston Keiffer achieved the milestone.

Timber Creek almost pulled off an incredible trifecta at Re-gion 8. After crowning four regional champions each of theprevious two years, the Chargers captured three regional titleson Saturday and had a fourth in the finals. Eastern (2008-2010)is the only South Jersey team to crown four regional championsin three consecutive seasons. Bryce Shade, who was a two-timeregion champ, was the only Charger to lose in the final.

Atlantic Citys Cesar Balmaceda is the first wrestler to wres-tle in his hometown in the state tournament. The Vikings hadntsent a wrestler to states since the 1970s, long before they start-ed holding the event at Boardwalk Hall. The Vikings last stateplacewinner was Marty Cheatham in 1970.

Camdens Andrew Stevens is also making the trip to Board-walk Hall. The junior heavyweight is 28-2, with both lossescoming to Haddon Heights Alex Thompson by 4-2 and 1-0decisions. The Panthers have had only two state placewinners intheir history with the last one, Kendall Gibson, coming in1989.

Team scores werent officially kept, but trackwrestling.comkept a running total and Camden Catholic (Region 7) andDelsea (Region 8) accumulated the most points in their regionswith 114.5 and 110, respectively. Shawnee and Paulsboro eachfinished second.

South Plainfield crowned five straight champions at Region 3from 126 to 152 pounds. Casey Stasenko started the run at 126,followed by Scott DelVecchio (132), Anthony Ashnault (138),Troy Heilmann (145) and Dylan Painton (152).

Hightstowns Joey DeCristofaro was disqualified from theRegion 7 tournament for flagrant misconduct following an 8-2semifinal loss at Region 7. The senior was 32-2 with 28 pins.
