Introduction to Section 2

Section 2 of the BMAT is based around GCSE level Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths. The content is GCSE-level, but they tend to ask difficult questions which stretch your GCSE knowledge to their extremes.

In this section you get:

• Chemistry (6 to 8 questions)• Physics (6 to 8 questions)• Biology (6 to 8 questions)• Maths (5 to 7 questions)

How do I prepare for this section?

• Brush up on your GCSE knowledge. In this book we have covered the main topics, but it is worth reading the official BMAT Revision Guide on their website (free). It is similar to the CGP books, and goes through content in full detail.

• Don’t revise everything GCSE. The BMAT specification tells you what you need to know. It is not the full GCSE specification, so don’t waste time on irrelevant topics. Also, use our guides on the most testable topics to structure your revision and focus on the important topics first.

Introduction to BMAT MathsLesson 1

Appreciate the various Maths topics tested in the BMAT, and the past trends from BMAT papers.

Page 4: Maths - Section 2 · Commonly Tested Maths Topics The table below shows the frequency of the Maths topics which we will cover in this book. The BMAT Specification changed in 2009,

• Don’t panic about Physics. Many BMAT students have not taken A-level Physics. Even if your Physics is rusty, don’t stress. By going through our book, step by step, and supplementing it with extra revision guides, you will master the Physics section.

Medic Mind Approach to Section 2

In this book each Section 2 subsection is broken down into 3 parts:

1. BMAT Specification - this is an extract from the official BMAT specification for Section 2. We extracted the points relevant to the particular tutorial. Most of the specification is covered in this book, but not all of it. We have focused on the most important and commonly tested elements of the specification.

2. Medic Mind Tips and Theory - in each tutorial we revise and summarise the key topics that come up. We have analysed all BMAT papers since 2009 (when the specification changed), to assess the most important topics.

3. Practice Questions - there are 1 to 5 practice questions per topic, found at the end of the tutorial. This should help you consolidate your learning by doing a BMAT style question (written by Medic Mind).

How should I build on this course?

After this course:

• Re-cap the BMAT specification and read the official BMAT free guide to fill gaps in your knowledge. Go through the specification and learn the science and maths content in full detail. We do not cover all topics in the specifications - this is a revision guide based on the most commonly tested topics. Therefore you should use the Official BMAT Revision Guide (found online) and the specification to supplement your learning here.

• Do the past papers using our compilations. On our website we have compiled every past paper question by topic (www.medicmind.co.uk/resources). These will be released on 1st October 2017. So, for example, after you learn Gradients and Graphs in this book, do the past paper questions on this same topic using our compilations.

BMAT Specification

• Change the subject of a formula.

• Simplify rational expressions by cancelling or factorising and cancelling; use the four rules on algebraic rational expressions.

Medic Mind Tips and Theory

There have been 16 questions on Algebra since 2009.

There have been:

• 4 questions on Rearranging Algebra• 6 questions on Indices • 2 questions on Inequalities• 1 questions on Word Problems• 3 question on Simplifying

(Note that we have covered simultaneous equations in ‘Gradients and Graphs’).

Tips for Rearranging Formulae

Most questions will ask you to make a certain letter the subject of the equation. For example, if they want y to be the subject, they want an equation starting with ‘y = ….’

1. Remove unwanted types of symbol. Expand out brackets, remove square root signs, remove fractions.

2. Move all the y’s to one side, and the x’s to another side (assuming it is x and y)

Algebra: Rearranging and SimplifyingLesson 2

Be able to rearrange and simplify algebraic formulae using methods such as factorisation.

Page 7: Maths - Section 2 · Commonly Tested Maths Topics The table below shows the frequency of the Maths topics which we will cover in this book. The BMAT Specification changed in 2009,

3. Combine any x terms together, and likewise for y terms. If you have 5x and -3x, join this to 2x.

Rearrangement involving square roots

If the subject is a square root sign, you need to get everything apart from the square root to one side. Then square both sides to free your subject from the square root sign.

Factorising a non-quadratic

Sometimes you will need to factorise to free your subject.

For example… xy + 6x = 27 + y

can be factorised to… x (y + 6) = 27 + y

And simplified to… x = (27 + y) / (y + 6)

Factorising a quadratic

Sometimes you will have a quadratic equation and will need to factorise to solve. These questions will not normally ask you to make something the subject, but will instead ask you to solve the equation fully.

For example… x2 - 3x - 18 = 0

can be factorised to… (x - 6) (x + 3) = 0

And solved as… x = 6 or x = -3

If you need to re-cap factorisation, re-cap ‘Gradients and Graphs’, or for more detail consult your GCSE mathematics textbook.
