When ordering numbers we need to look at both the tens and the ones. This will help us to put them in the correct order. When looking at two-digit numbers, the digit on the left represents ‘tens’ and the digit on the right represents ‘ones’.

Here are some numbers that need to be put in order from smallest to biggest.

34 52 38 27

First I would look at the tens of each number to find out which one is the smallest.

Page 30: Maths PPT wb 01.06 · About our Maths activities Mental Maths starters Choose oneof the challenges to complete. These should be quick starters lasting about 5 minutes. Activities We

34 52 38 27

I can see that the 27 only has 2 tens, the others have 3 tens and 5 tens. Next I can see that 34 and 38 both have 3 tens. This means I now need to look at the ones. 34 has 4 ones and 38 has 8 ones. 4 is smaller than 8 so 34 must be next. This leaves 52 as the biggest number.

27 34 38 52smallest biggest
