Improving GCSE Mathematics re-sit results through continuing professional development

The Maths-4-Life professional development programme is designed to improve GCSE student re-sit pass rates in Mathematics by enhancing dialogic teaching within the classroom.

This evidence-based programme has been co-developed by the Centre for Research in Mathematics Education at the University of Nottingham and twenty lead practitioners from Further Education Colleges around England.

We are seeking teachers of GCSE Mathematics re-sits in colleges and schools in England to take part in a two-year randomised controlled trial of the programme.

Who are our partners?

This project is funded by the Education Endowment Foundation as part of a joint initiative with JP Morgan, delivered by the University of Nottingham and independently evaluated by the Behavioural Insights Team.

What will colleges and schools receive?

All colleges and schools that take part in the evaluation of the Maths-4-Life programme will benefit by being part of either an intervention or a control group. Teachers that are selected for the intervention group will take part in the equivalent of 5 days of professional development in year 1. During this time they will work in local collaborative research groups to trial 5 lessons based around 5 key topics and 5 key pedagogies. Colleges and schools that are selected to be part of the control group will receive £1000 in lieu of the Maths-4-Life programme. Please note that both groups will be required to provide data in both the first and second years of the trial.

Who is eligible to apply?

All colleges and schools within England that will have students studying for the GCSE retake examinations from September 2018 are eligible to apply. The teachers taking part should be expecting to teach at least ten GCSE re-sit students during the year of the programme.

Applications from teachers within the same college group are welcome providing that the teachers are either geographically or organisationally separate. Please contact us using the details below if clarification is required or look at the Getting Involved page on our website at www.m4l.org.uk.

Next Steps

Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Once you have registered an interest in being part of the programme we will send you a Memorandum of Understanding which is to be signed and returned by the end of May 2018. This will ensure that there is clarity and agreement on the role everyone will play in the trial.
