Mathematics Pathways for Student Success in Community CollegesIn cooperation with the Charles A. Dana Center
The Problem
• 60% of community college students who take the placement exam need at least one remedial course
• Lack of persistence: – Current sequence is 3-5 courses– More students are lost because they don’t enroll in
the next course than from failure of any single course
• Topics lack relevance to academic goals and real world
• Only one available pathway for students, regardless of major
