Functional Skills: Mathematics – Entry Level 1Sample Lesson Plan – Week 11AimTo work with weight and related vocabularyLearning OutcomesAt the end of the session, the learner will be able to: understand and use vocabulary related to weight compare objects using a balance scale to identify the heavier/lighter put objects in order of weight understand that weight is not necessarily related to size
Aspiration For learners to feel confident about working with weight, using a balance scale and using related vocabulary
DIFFERENTIATION:MUST participate in exercises (be able to compare weight using a balance scale)SHOULD complete a card activity (put objects in order of weight from lightest to heaviest) COULD gain an understanding of how weight need not be related to size
RESOURCES:Practical activity: set of objects (e.g. different types of ball), balance scale and worksheet for each pair or small group of learners Card activity: set of cards for each pair of learners, cards should be cut up beforehand, flip chart paper, glue sticksWorksheets: one for each learnerMini whiteboards, marker pens and board rubbers

Functional Skills: Mathematics – Entry Level 1Sample Lesson Plan – Week 11Functional Skills Coverage and range: Describe the properties of size and measure, including length, width, height and
weight and make simple comparisons sort and classify objects practically using a single criterion
Process: Examining patterns and relationships Thinking through a plan for solving a problem Selecting appropriate mathematical procedures to solve a problem Applying mathematical procedures correctly Finding results and solutions Interpreting results and solutions to problems
Communicating solutions to practical problems, either verbally or by writing answers down so that they make sense
Differentiation and extension strategiesPaired work and small group work, extension activities

Consolidation of pre-requisite skills
Discussion on vocabulary related to weight; heavy, heavier than, heaviest, light, lighter than, lightest
Discussion of objects learners consider to be light or heavy. Tutor records objects identified by learners.
Uses reinforcement questions on whiteboard/interactive whiteboard: e.g.‘select two objects’ and connect with the phrase ‘is lighter than or is heavier than’ ‘select the heaviest item from the list’ ‘select the lightest item from the list’
Listens and asks questions
Completes questions in pairs on mini whiteboards
Notes key words and phrases used
Practices using introductory words and phrases as modelled by teacher
Successfully answers questions verbally and completes questions on mini whiteboards

Card activity Introduces the context of the activity:organises class into pairs or small groupsgives out cards, flip chart paper, glue sticks describes context: learners put animals in order of weight from the lightest to the heaviest and stick them in correct order on flip chart paper responds to questions asks groups open questions to help
them through the task compares findings between
different groupsDIFFERENTIATION: can learners think of animals heavier/lighter than those given in card activity; do learners know any units which are associated with measuring weight; learners could also name animals used in images and do some research on average weight using internet)
Familiarises themselves with context of the activity
Asks and responds to questions about images on cards
In pairs or small groups: Discusses which animals are heavier/lighter than others
Successfully answers questions verbally

Worksheet activity
Introduces the context of the activity:organises class into pairs or small groupsgives out worksheet and introduces the task: to answer questions on worksheet using knowledge about weight of objects asks groups open questions to help them through the taskcompares findings between different groupsdiscusses how objects of the same size can be of different weight
Discusses how to answer the questions on the worksheet

Functional Skills: Mathematics – Entry Level 1Practical Weight Activity– Week 11
Use a balance scale to compare the weights of everyday objects.Use the comparison to help put the objects in order of weight.
For example:Different types of ball
squash ball golf ball cricket ball tennis ball
table tennis ball
billiard ball plastic ball base ball
Learners compare balls two at a time and connect with one of two statements:
is lighter than
is heavier thanFunctional Skills: Mathematics – Entry Level 1Sample Lesson Plan – Week 11

Functional Skills: Mathematics – Entry Level 1Practical Weight Activity– Week 11In order of weight:lightest
heaviest
In order of size:
smallest
largest
Is the order of weight the same as the order of size?
