How you can help your child athome with Math.

Play games as a family, such as counting games and games that

require keeping score. **Games require children to use strategies to make decisions, solve

problems and develop an understanding about numbers, how to usethem (number sense) and computational skills.

Use the date and figure out how many different ways you canexpress this date: 12th = 10+2, 6+6, 2x6, 15-3, etc.

On your next trip to the grocery store, use a scale to obtain theamount of produce you request.

Use the coins in your pocket or purse to play a guessing game:I have 27 using 5 coins. What coins do I have?

While shopping for 1-2 items, ask your child to figure how much

change you will get from a $10 bill, for example.

Use recipes to learn about measurement and fractions.

Use cooking pans of food (lasagna, brownies, etc.) to figure outhow to cut into equal fractions. Discuss fractional parts of thefood, such as the amount eaten, the amount left, the amount in allbefore served.

Use snack items (raisins, peanuts, etc.) to figure out how to divideevenly between several people. Talk about the division : 24 raisins 3 people = 8 raisins each.

Estimate the number of candies in a bag, discuss how the estimatewas determined and count the candies to compare the estimate.

Create a graph to organize and display a collection (such as shells, baseball cards or stickers).
