NotesI’ve looked at the DE Benchmarks, specifically at topic that grade levels have covered
o 6th grade – The Number System – division, GCF and LCM, operations with decimalso 7th grade – Ratio & Proportional Relationshipso 8th grade – Number Systems (Rational and Irrational Numbers), and Expression & Equations (Square Root & Cube
Root, Properties of Exponents, and any question dealing with exponents)
I looked at the amount of time that students are working on ALEKS (don’t know how accurate my numbers are because when teachers move students that remain in the class that they were moved from). I determined the percentage of students working at least 9 hours on the program total.
o 6th grade – Habet 64%, Shingler 47%, Williamson 24%, Pierce 20%o 7th grade – Cline 60%, Cox 19%, Riordan 25%, Rogers 41%, Swanson 18%o 8th grade – Williams 63%, Jones 53%, Waskiewicz 10%, Fava 23%
We have a cross grade level meeting on Wednesday morning at 7:45. I have already sent all math teachers a calendar invite. Topics to discuss at the cross grade level meeting:15 | Page

Signing up to man the ALEKS lab after school on Wednesdays Reminder of holding students accountable for doing their ALEKS Looking at Discovery Education benchmark data, especially: Interactive Item Summary
o Sort by percent correct, percent incorrect, reporting category, etco I think this is the most useful
PDF Teachero This allows you to look at your class as a whole.o The report is broken up with one grouping all of the questions in the same category.
PDF Individual Studento Shows you how a particular student does.o It has the graph that compares the student to the school and to the county.
Comparative Growtho Not real useful now, but after the second benchmark this will show you how much the student has grown.

ALEKS Letter Return to PlanAugust 12, 2014
Dear Parents,Cabarrus County Schools has purchased the rights to the ALEKS (Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces). ALEKS is a web-based,
artificially intelligent assessment and learning system. ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student
knows and doesn't know in a course. ALEKS then instructs the student on the topics she is most ready to learn. As a student works through a course,
ALEKS periodically reassesses the student to ensure that topics learned are also retained. ALEKS will help those students who exhibit deficiencies in
mathematics to fill those gaps. ALEKS will also prove beneficial to those students who excel in mathematics by providing them with opportunities to
stretch their thinking through more rigorous content and questions.
Students will spend a minimum of 100 minutes each week on the ALEKS program 20 minutes each night 20 minutes once a week in the classroom for practice and assessment
Students will need a notebook to keep track of time spend on ALEKS and to work out math problems
The school will be open for those who do not have access at home or are having trouble with their computer. It will be open on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 8:00 am It will be open after school once a week until 5:00 pm. The day of the week has yet to be determined but once we have made
the decision it will be communicated in your child’s math class and on the school’s webpage.
Thanks Chris Cline Lead Math Teacher
