The third Fleming Lecture will take place March 27 and 28 of 2014. The Fleming Lecture Speaker Series is co-sponsored by the Richard Fleming Endowed Speaker Award and the Mathematics Department. This year our speaker will be Sathamangalam Ranga Iyengar Srinivasa Varadhan. Varadhan was awarded the Abel Prize in 2007 by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. The Abel Prize is dedicated to the memory of the famous mathematician Niels Henrik Abel (1802 – 1829). Varadhan is currently the Frank Jay Gould Professor of Science at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University. He is known for his work in probability theory, stochastic processes, and partial differential equations. He is particularly cited for creating a unified theory of large deviations. Varadhan first became interested in mathematics in high school, which he credits to one of his teachers. He began to view mathematics as something to enjoy, like “playing chess or solving puzzles.” (http://www-history.mcs.st-and.ac.uk/Biographies/Varadhan.html) He got his bachelor’s degree in Statistics in 1959 and his Masters degree in 1960, from Presidency College, Madras. He worked at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), initially in the area of statistical quality control but soon became interested in problems dealing with the more mathematical aspects of probability theory. He was awarded a doctorate from the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) in 1963. His dissertation was on ‘Convolution properties of distributions on topological groups,’ under statistician C. R. Rao. One of Andrei Kolmogorov’s comments on Varadhan’s work was “This is not the work of a student, but of a mature master” (http://www-history.mcs.st-and.ac.uk/Biographies/Varadhan.html). Varadhan’s awards and honors include:

o The Birkhoff Prize (1994) o The Margaret and Herman Sokol Award of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences from New York

University (1995) o The AMS Leroy P. Steele Prize for Seminal Contribution to Research (1996) o The Abel Prize (2007) o The Padma Bhushan from the Government of India (2008) o The National Medal of Science (2010)
