Outline and Application Instructions

1. Outline of the Projects

The Collaborative Research Projects (CRP) of the Materials and Structures Laboratory (MSL), Tokyo Institute of Technology, include the following five different types of research and workshop to be carried out / held at MSL in collaboration with a staff member(s) of MSL.

General CRP (of Category A, B or C):

Research  project that is conducted by a team consisting of staff members of MSL and researchers of other organizations, using the facilities, equipment data, etc. available at MSL.

International CRP (of Category A, B or C):

Research project that is conducted by a team consisting of staff members of MSL and researchers of other domestic as well as foreign organizations using the facilities, equipment,data, etc. available at MSL.

CRP on Specified Topics:

Research projects on one of the following specified research topics that is coordinated by a staff member of MSL and conducted by a team consisting of staff members of MSL and researchers of other organization, using the facilities, equipment, data, etc. available at MSL.

Specified Research Topics (Please see the abstracts of the topics.)

Workshop:

Discussion meeting (for 2-3 days) of relatively small size on a focused topic to be held at our MSL to promote the collaborative  research projects.

International Workshop:

International discussion meeting (for 2-3 days) of relatively small size on a focused topic to be held at our MSL to promote the collaborative  research projects.

2. Qualified Applicants

Researcher with a doctoral or an equivalent who is reasonable in approving the agreements on intellectual property rights with MSL.

(Technical Staff and Postgraduate students may be included in the team for a collaborative research project.)

The number of the submission is limited to one for General and International CRP and one for Workshop and International Workshop.

3. How to apply

Before your application, you are advised to consult with a staff member(s) of MSL about your proposing research project, the plan of your stay at MSL during the project, the research expenses, etc.

For your information about MSL's organization, staff members, their research topics, internet homepages and brochures are available at our office (see the address given in Sec. 12).

The applicant of General and International CRP of Category A should submit a form (size A4, free format), where "the originality and necessity of CRP" must be mentioned for reviewers.

General CRP, International CRP and CRP on Specified Topics:

The applicant should submit a set of application form (use Form 1 attached) by e-mail or F.D. to the address given in Sec. 12.

Workshop and International Workshop:

The applicant should submit a set of application form (use Form 2 attached)) by e-mail or F.D. to the address given in Sec. 12.

4. Period of Project

General CRP, International CRP and CRP on Specified Topics:

About one year from the April 15th to March 15th of the next year.

You may extend the period up to a maximum of three years. In this case, you are requested to place a new application every year.

Workshop and International Workshop:

The maximum period is limited to three consecutive days between April 15th, and March 15th of the next year.

5. Research Expenses

Necessary expenses for the CRP or Workshop may be covered in accordance to the budget allocated. (The airfare and public transportation fee will be paid.)

6. Deadline of Application

January 28, 2011 (No application will be accepted later than the deadline.)

7. Selection and Notification

The decision shall be notified to each applicant (i.e. project coordinator) by the end of April, 2011.

8. Report of CRP / Workshop

The coordinator of a selected CRP or Workshop is required to submit a few pages of "Report of CRP" or a "Report of Workshop" to the address given in Sec. 12.

9. Publication of Research Results and Others

In case of publishing with the results of your CRP, please acknowledge the sponsorship for the collaborative research project provided by the Materials and Structures Laboratory, and send a copy of reprint to the CRP office.

Accommodations in Tokyo Institute of Technology are not available.

11. Award Presentations to Outstanding Research Activities

The MSL Director’s Awards will be presented to the outstanding research activities, in two categories of "Recognized Research Potential" and "Outstanding Research Accomplishment" respectively.

Abstracts of Collaborative Research Projects on Specified Topics 

Heterogeneous Lewis acid workable in water

Representative: Michikazu Hara

Heterogeneous Lewis acid catalysts workable in water would be available for the environmentally benign production of various chemicals. While some rare earth metal complexes function as efficient homogeneous Lewis acid catalysts in water, scarcity of rare earth metal prevents large-scale production based on the catalysts.Highly active, stable, separable and inexpensive heterogeneous Lewis acid catalysts based on abundant inorganic oxides are developed on the basis of nano-scale control for MOx unsaturated polyhedral in this study. This study also clarifies the mechanism of water-tolerant Lewis acid sites, resulting in further improvement of the catalytic performance and creation of novel function materials.

Studies of the correlation between the Structure and Properties of Functional Materials

Representative: Hitoshi Kawaji

The correlation between the crystal structure and the physical properties of functional materials is studied to get the information for improvement of the properties of the existing functional materials, search and design of new compounds, and development of new functional materials. The basic experimental research on the high quality samples of the materials: insulators, semiconductors, superconductors, ferroelectric materials, magnetic materials, solid electrolytes, and so on will be carried out by measuring various physical properties and structure analysis. The theoretical studies on the basis of the computational science technique will be made in addition to the experimental studies to obtain the unified understanding of the bulk properties from atoms and molecules.

Attainment of long-term sustainable building structures

Representative: Hiroyasu Sakata

Building structures were made with a variety of materials and a lot of energy. Therefore it is very important to insure long-term sustainability of building structures under disturbance for global environmental protection. This research project, therefore, aims to develop a method to effectively utilize advanced materials and structural systems for upgrading of existing buildings under extreme events such as earthquake, wind, fire, and impact as well as a vertical load. New construction of buildings and retrofit applications are intended.

Development of unusual atomic structures in inorganic materials and related new functionalities

Chemical bonds in inorganic materials contain large contributions of covalent bonds with short-range interaction and ionic bonds with long-range interaction, and thus there are many inorganic crystals that have very long periodic structures in 0 – 3 dimensions. It is also expected that artificial control of ionic arrangements will alter local electrostatic potential largely, and thus leads to developing new functionalities. Further, recent works have revealed that strong iconicity is the origin of large mobility in amorphous oxide semiconductors. These imply that the utilization and control of these unusual atomic structures will lead to development of new functional materials and devices. In this project, we will develop new materials and functionalities by designing, controlling, and employing such unusual structures in inorganic materials. The scope of the research project includes materials design, structure characterization, property measurements, development of new devices and applications, and so on.

Development of Secure-Materials for safe and secure Society

Representative: Shizuo Hayashi

Recently materials are strongly requested to direct fot establishing the safe and secure Society, according to the policy of Science and Technology Basic Plan in which the science and technology should contribute to improve the welfare of nations. We are now proposing a new concept of “Secure Materials”, defining “the materials for the safe and secure society” and progressing to realize the secure materials. For example “Materials for safely improvement”, “Materials for human protection”, “Harmless Materials”, “Sustainable Materials” and so on.

Appendix 1: Regulation on Intellectual Property Right Yielded From Your CRP With MSL Researchers

・Case of researchers who Belong to universities In general the yielded right shall belong to the researcher or his/her institute/university.

In case when the contributions from researchers of Tokyo Tech to the invention you are to file as an intellectual property are recognized to be significant, Tokyo Tech shall discuss with you the property right.

When you file patents and/or intellectual property rights yielded from your CRP with MSL researchers, you shall provide us at the CRP office with a copy of the filing/filed documents. (The CRP office shall strictly storage the copy and keep the secrecy of your filing.)

institute/company. In case when the contributions from researchers of Tokyo Tech to the invention you are to file as an intellectual property are recognized to be significant, Tokyo Tech shall discuss with you the property right.
