THE SHOWDOWN: The Dodgers tonight begin an important six-

game homestand with the first of three contests against the second-place

San Francisco Giants. Los Angeles leads the NL West by 1.0 game over

the Giants, who in turn hold a 2.0-game lead in the NL Wild Card race.

Following this series with San Francisco, the Dodgers will host the Cubs,

who have MLB’s best record, for three games this weekend.

The Giants have won six of 10 games between the two clubs

this season, but the Dodgers have made up 9.0 games in the

standings since June 27, turning an 8.0-game deficit into a 1.0-

game lead by going 28-19 in that time (San Francisco has gone

19-28 since June 27). The two teams will meet nine more times

this season, including six in Los Angeles.

TAKING STOCK: To say the Dodgers continued their hot hitting

yesterday would be a huge understatement as the club pounded out a

season-high 21 hits while scoring more runs (18) and hitting more

homers (7) than they have since 2006, in an 18-9 victory over Cincinnati.

The Dodgers top the Major Leagues with a .475 slugging percentage in

33 games since the All-Star break, while ranking among the National

League leaders in team batting average (.280, 1st) and runs per game

(5.61, 2nd, 185 R). The Dodgers’ slugging percentage is on pace to be the

highest in Los Angeles history after the All-Star break, far outpacing the

previous mark of .434 set in 2008.

According to STATS, LLC, the Dodgers are just the fifth team

in Major League history to open and close a road trip by

scoring 15 or more runs, joining the 1879 Providence Grays,

the 1910 New York Giants, the 1950 New York Yankees and

the 2003 St. Louis Cardinals. The Dodgers have scored at least

15 runs in three road games this season, tying a club best since

moving to Los Angeles in 1958 (1974, 2002).

THE M.V.P.?: Corey Seager had a career-high tying four hits

yesterday, extending his hitting streak to 13 games. Seager is batting

.491 (26-for-53) with three doubles, three homers and nine RBI during

the run, which began on Aug. 8 and is already the fourth double-digit

hitting streak of his career. His 19-game streak from June 16-July 6 is

tied for the longest run of the year by a National Leaguer along with

Carlos Gonzalez and Ender Inciarte. Seager continues to rank among the

NL’s overall leaders in runs (83, 5th), hits (155, 2nd), doubles (34, 3rd),

total bases (261, 4th), average (.321, T-3rd) and slugging pct. (.540, 10th).

Yesterday, Seager tied Glenn Wright, (1930) for the most

single-season home runs by a shortstop in franchise history.

Seager’s 188 hits through the first 147 games of his career

(2015-16) are the most by a Los Angeles Dodger and rank as

the second most in franchise history since 1913, behind only

Johnny Frederick (205, 1929). Seager already has the L.A.

rookie doubles record and is approaching the team single-

season rookie leaders in most major offensive categories:

In his last nine games, he is batting .359 (14-for-39) with nine runs, two doubles, three home runs and eight RBI along with a .390 OBP and a .641 SLG since Aug. 12…has reached base safely in 10 of his last 12 games, batting .327 (17-for-52) with 12 runs, two doubles, four home

runs and nine RBI along with a .960 OPS since Aug. 8

He has 450 plate appearances this season without grounding into a double play, the most of any big leaguer (next: Jarrod Saltalamacchia, 212)…according to Stats, LLC, only one Los Angeles Dodger has completed an entire season with more plate appearances than Utley without a GIDP - Dave Roberts in 2003 (440 PA)

Has reached base safely in 29 of his last 34 games against the Giants, posting a .278/.349/.421 slashline with three doubles, two triples, four homers and 15 RBI since Aug. 7, 2011

Among active second basemen, he ranks among the active leaders in games played (1691, 3rd), runs (1028, 3rd), hits (1753, 3rd), doubles (375, 2nd), triples (52, 1st), home runs (247, 2nd), RBI (966, 2nd), walks (670, 2nd), OBP (.362, 2nd), SLG (.474, 2nd), extra-base hits (674, 2nd) and total bases (2973, 2nd)

Made his return to Philadelphia on Tuesday for the first time since being traded to Los Angeles on Aug. 19, 2015 and recorded his 23rd multi-homer game of his career (second of the season, last: May 28 at NYM), with a solo home run in the fifth inning and his seventh-career grand slam (second this year, last: May 28 at NYM) in the seventh…according to

the Elias Sports Bureau, Utley, who hit 233 during his 13 seasons in Philadelphia, is the second player in MLB history to hit 200-or-more homers with a team and homer twice in his first road game against that team, becoming the first to do so since Frank Thomas slugged two homers on May 22, 2006 at U.S. Cellular Field against the White Sox as a

member of the Athletics
