president’smessage
Dear Members and SupportersThe great Alistair Cooke spent many years writing his letters from America which were aired on the BBC, so here is my attempt at one from the Balearic island of Mallorca.
The Premier Rugby season is now well under way and once again the greater interest for most of it will be “who will go down” as for “who will win” won’t be decided until the play offs at the end. This does make the fourth place spot the second most interesting thing to look out for. Rumours are rife that the RFU and the Premier League are looking to close the league off and that relegation will no longer take place. Who will want to be the last out of the door? How scintillating will that make the league as a spectacle?
Back to my favourite league for classy unpredictable rugby and that is National 1 where new entrants Sale and Chinnor have certainly made their mark and old friends Cinderford have settled in nicely. Cambridge possibly had the encounter of the year at home against Sale and all the emotions were experienced in that fire cracker of a match.
The video report of the Loughborough game showed we still have some work to do and sorting out sloppy ball handling needs to be a priority.
It’s great to see our 2nd team in such good form and spirit. A close run opener against Richmond was followed by a demolition of Barnes last week. This team has some very talented boys in it and movement between the 2nd and 1st teams is regular and seamless. The 1st and 2nd teams all train as a unit and they celebrate and look after each other as a unit. It’s a pleasure to be in such a positive atmosphere.
Now for today and we welcome Chinnor back to Volac Park for the first time since we last met in 2 South a couple of years ago. As mentioned Chinnor have got off to a flyer and sit in joint 2nd place. There are no easy fixtures in this league and today will be no exception.
Adiós amigos and see you next week.

match reportvs loughborough
Cambridge enjoy a win and gain 4 points as they got the better of Loughborough on their own patch...
Loughborough 14 CRUFC 20
Richie Williams’ side began well with an early prolonged foray into the Loughborough 22 not providing the points it should have done. It finished with number 14 Kwaku Asiedu doing everything right before knocking the ball on in the in-goal area. The set piece leading up to Asiedu’s chance was incredibly good as well, with Cambridge winning multiple Loughborough ball at scrum time. The lineout was also proving an issue for the men in purple and the blood and sand had it mostly their own way in the opening ten minutes, with Jake McCloud and Steve Hipwell proving their worth in the back row. As did Rob Conquest, who had to play in his unusual position of blindside flanker after an early injury to Keifer Laxton.
No points to show for it would ultimately prove costly, with Loughborough replying with some good pressure of their own and after James Ayrton had originally provided some excellent defensive work to put his hand underneath the ball as Loughborough centre and former Henley Hawks man Oscar Hirskyj-Douglas attempted to dive over. They would score however on the next move they made, winning their own ball on the scrum, before scoring via the base of the post thanks to Scrum-half Moates. The conversion was good by their new man Reed, and the blood and sand now found themselves with an uphill tasked that could have been so different if they’d taken their chances in the early stages of the match.
They did manage to work their way back in the game slowly but surely, and shortly before half-time they found the crucial scores needed. The first of those came via Ean Griffiths, after great work in the lineout from Jake McCloud.
The ball was taken short by the forwards around the corner twice before Griffiths found himself over the whitewash, for his third try of the season. Penfold didn’t convert but then responded well, opting for the three points just minutes later to send the men in red and yellow a point up at the interval, after another lineout steal, this time from Rob Conquest and a man in purple being caught around the side of the maul. HT: Loughborough 7 Cambridge 8
The second period began end to end with neither side being able to hold onto the ball for large periods and the unforced error count going up as the conditions began to deteriorate.
An unforced error would lead to the Blood and Sand stretching their lead as a dropped ball in midfield allowed outside centre Sam Yawayawa to break clear in the midfield, leaving every Loughborough player behind and fly-hacking the ball to the try line before dotting down. Penfold added the extras.
A further score from Steve Hipwell, after rampaging his way to the line and taking three Loughborough defenders over with him added to the score, before Loughborough were able to register a final consolation via Mark Dixon, after their replacement scrum-half Callum Watson, brother of England star Anthony had made the original break. Reed added the extras.
Cambridge did go in search of more points but they were ultimately not required as replacement 9 Fin Creighton fed the ball to replacement stand-off Jack Green who pumped the ball into touch. Game won and the points were heading back down the M1.

To Boldly Go...
OK. So I’ve been watching a lot of Star Trek recently. But there is a very real sense of Enterprise and Discovery this season as the Next Generation take their first steps on a journey of exploration that could take them to new worlds.
A draw with a Sale side that won’t struggle overmuch this term was creditable in the way it was earned, coming back from a deficit which would have been insurmountable for most teams, most clubs? I’ll take that. I wasn’t the only one that wasn’t happy about having to do it – and that lesson was learned last week at Loughborough, where again we conceded first but were never in any real trouble. Occasional danger, maybe, but trouble by no means. A drier track and a little more care would have yielded the scoreline and points tally that the play and effort deserved.
I’ve been here long enough to see coaches, players and seasons come and go. I’ve rarely been as impressed by a coaching team and a squad in the way I am now. And there are signs that when everything clicks, last season’s try bonus issues and the number of games lost within 7 points should be a thing of the past.
What do I think I’ve learned thus far? Well, last term’s players are better than they were and all the better for the experience gained over the two seasons we’ve been back in National One. This season’s coaching team are showing an understanding and attention to detail that wasn’t there before. There is more
than Plan A by a long chalk. And this season will be much more exciting and less fraught.
Chinnor today will, though, be at least as stiff a test as that provided by Sale. Promoted teams have momentum on their side and generally, as well as being eager to prove themselves, aren’t used to losing. Today will be both tough and exciting, of that I have no doubt.
You can hear post match reaction on Tuesday Night Sport on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire this week between 7–10pm. I’m proud of this show – the one where we get under the skin of local sport and sports personalities below Football League level, play a bit of music and have some fun along the way.
If you listened this week, you’ll have heard Richie’s views on Loughborough away and will have learned all about, among other things, Ben Ibrahim’s trip to Germany to train with their national squad. I hope you did and I hope you enjoyed it. I’m darn sure I did.
If you have a story that you think will make great radio, or just want to give me some feedback on the show, come and see me today or email me at the address below.

The new Clubhouse extension was opened during the first weekend of the season with all the fanfare of a dignitary strewned, bubbly fuelled, VIP Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.
The Facility now provides the Club with four new state of the art unisex changing rooms, officials changing rooms, Gym, two Physio treatment suites, Laundry room and Club Office.
The £500,000 project was completed with financial support from the RFU, the Rugby Football Foundation, Cambridge City Council, Mick George Community Fund, Amey Community Fund and individual and family donations from the Club’s own members.
The official opening was performed by Deborah Griffin of the RFU Council (and Bursar at Homerton College), Lewis Herbert, Leader of the Cambridge City Council and Jon Stump, Finance Director at Mick George Limited. Local MPs Daniel Zeichner and Heidi Allen were also in attendance to help celebrate the completion of the Project.
Commenting on the opening of the new Facility and Opening event; Steve Bowller, President said: “Renovating and replacing the changing rooms has been our biggest capital project priority for a number of years. No one is going to miss the previous changing rooms that’s for sure, even the most die-hard rugby traditionalist. We now have player off – field facilities we can be proud of that reflect our status as a National Level 1 Club. Rob Dean and his team have done a magnificent job.”
Rob Dean, Club Chairman said: “The opening this weekend is the culmination of a huge team effort over a prolonged period of time. We’re massively grateful to the RFU and RFF, Cambridge City Council, Mick George and Amey for recognising the need, working together to provide the critical funding resulting in a fantastic facility for both the club and other users. Hats off too to the Construction team led by Nigel Mills & James Diver of Millcam

Construction. With this standard of facility, I even started to toy with the idea of perhaps giving playing again a go personally.”
Deborah Griffin said: “This is a terrific example of the investment the RFU is making into grass roots rugby, although of course Cambridge are a successful Club and operating at a high level in the rugby pyramid. It is just great that the catalyst for this project was starting the Womens and Girls section, the increasingly well-known Cambridge Rubies. Cate Dyble, John Creighton and the coaches have done a brilliant job attracting women and girls to the Club from across the region.
Jon Stump from Mick George said: “We know how much teamwork and tenacity is required to successfully complete a programme of this scale. Cambridge Rugby Club is clearly thriving and inclusive organisation and I am full of admiration for what is being routinely achieved by the management team there, all of whom are doing this in their spare time.”
