MAT ABACUS Business School - Profile, 2019

Dear Stakeholder,

I bring you greetings from MAT ABACUS Business School. After 20 years of training chartered certified accountants and business managers, we are beginning a new and exciting journey. This journey has seen the Management Accountancy Training Company (MAT) Limited merge with Abacus Business School a leading provider of Executive Education in Uganda.

Since its inception MAT has maintained a tradition of developing high quality professional accountancy training programs. Many of our students have passed their ACCA and CPA(U) examinations and qualified as professional accountants, including over 303 graduands last year. These students have also won top prizes and our ACCA students regularly feature in the world wide top twenty out of over 400,000 students. We are an Approved ACCA Tuition Provider in Uganda and one of only five Approved Learning Partners “ALP’s” at the Platinum level in Africa).

In addition, we are also an Approved Learning Partner of the Heriot-Watt University for their MBA program with more than 350 students this semester. This MBA program has 8,500 MBA graduates to date, and over 8,000 active students in 144 countries. It was listed second larg-est in the Financial Times survey ‘20 of the top distance learning MBAs’ in March 2003.

The merger has been the result of many months of planning and our vision of further expand-ing the menu of programs that are accessible to our stakeholders. This merger will enable us leverage the good will in the marketplace, and align our vision to the aspirations of our stake-holders. We are committed to quality and this merger, has been carefully designed to uphold that quality.

MAT ABACUS Business School will be structured into a number of divisions, under the leader-ship of Professor Samuel Sejjaaka, and the programs presently running at MAT will remain in the Professional Qualifications Division. In addition, we will be offering new programs cover-ing the Executive and Academic training needs of our clients.

We see great potential and opportunities ahead of us, and look forward to sharing our dreams and aspirations with you as we embark on this new journey of discovery.

Welcome aboard!

Dear Stakeholder,

A warm welcome to the world of MAT ABACUS Business School. The Business School has been formed as a result of a merger between the Management Accountancy Training Compa-ny Limited (MAT) and Abacus Business School to offer quality business education across the board with a special emphasis on ethical leadership and management.

MAT, which was formed in 1999, has consistently been the top performing accountancy train-ing college in the country and in Africa. Abacus Business School , which was formed in 2014, has excelled equally in redefining the landscape in executive education, coaching and mento-ring. Their union is therefore a natural fit, bringing into existence what we expect shall be the premier business school in Uganda.

At MAT ABACUS, we have developed a culture of keeping our promises. Our business model is based on the particularly strong belief that we owe our success to the trust our stakeholders have placed in us. Integrity, commitment and excellence are values we cherish. In the pursuit of excellence, we see ourselves modeling and strengthening the capacity of tomorrow’s leaders.

Our service is dedicated to creating a quality customer experience in which only the best is good enough. In order to meet this goal, we believe that our pedagogy should be designed in a manner that enables and excites further inquiry and learning. That is why the case method is central to our training approach.

We have our eye on the future. Convinced that yesterday’s demand for skills will not suffice tomorrow’s needs, we aim to work with our clients in such a way that learning is exciting, inno-vative, and so that students can challenge their minds everyday. The only way we know how to succeed is through grit and deliberate practice.

Welcome to the world of MAT ABACUS. Your journey starts here!

Sincerely,

Prof. Samuel Sejjaaka, PhD, FCCA, CPA

About MAT ABACUS Business School

MAT ABACUS Business School is an in-stitution that was formed as the result of a merger between the Management and Accountancy Training Company (MAT) and Abacus Business School (ABS).

The merger created the requisite synergies to transform the indus-try through practical higher education, research and scholarship rel-evant to the resolution of our continent’s challenges.

The Management Accountancy Training Company and Abacus Busi-ness School (ABS) were both established institutions recognized in the areas of specialty that include, but are not limited to, profession-al courses and executive leadership training respectively.

Both institutions have been able to impact the education sector due to the quality of the programs that are offered. MAT is one of only five Approved Learning Partners (ALPs) at the platinum level in Af-rica. It has a custom equipped training center with modern teaching facilities, utilizing over 10,000 square feet of classroom space.

Abacus Business School (ABS), on the other hand, provides quality education and training for industry and business practitioners across all sectors and levels of management through interactions with top leadership of the different companies in the various sectors.

ABS identified a glaring gap in the current education system, which is that the curriculum delivered by most institutions does not reso-nate with existing and emerging industry needs. In a dynamic envi-ronment, there is also a need for those already in this employment to re-skill and up-skill in order to remain relevant in this Volatile Un-certain Complex and Ambiguous (VUCA) environment.

As a result of this merger, MAT ABACUS will maintain the programs that are currently being run. However, additional programs will be developed and delivered to address emerging issues in the dynamic and competitive business environment. MAT ABACUS acknowledg-es that some institutions are driving in the same direction and will therefore leverage strategic partnerships as a key pillar to delivering some of the proposed practical courses. We already have partner-ships with some institutions including; Clarke International Univer-sity, Edinburgh University and Case Medical Center.

Research

Our core priority is to produce world-class research that challenges the “normal”, changing practice and think-ing. The creation of new and original knowledge, and the insights and in-spirations produced as a result, lie at the core for our success of how we create value and other endeavors.

We are committed to fundamental research exploring un-derpinning concepts and problems as well as research that actively and intentionally engages with and seeks to under-stand the issues of “today and the future”. We seek to tackle key problems and assumptions, creating an agenda for en-quiry-driven engagement with emerging global issues.

An increasingly important dimension of our approach to re-search will be collaborations and partnerships, with fellow researchers and with a wider community of research funders and sponsors. This will build strong research networks and infrastructure with the capacity to address the big issues and generate new insights and knowledge.

This will lead to closer engagement with organizations in-terested in using our research, in particular employers, gov-ernments, charities and NGOs involved in advocacy and so-cio-cultural as well as economic and political change.

We will continue to develop our research culture, through better support for our research students and early career researchers, and through enhancement of our areas and centers of research excellence. We will nurture talented re-searchers and bring them through to have fulfilling and suc-cessful careers with us.

We will continue to judge the quality of our research by our performance in research assessment exercises, looking to future cycles beyond the Research Excellence Framework (REF) and to other measures of research quality and impact.

An increasing-ly important dimension of our approach to research will be col-laborations and partner-ships, with fellow re-searchers and with a wider community of research funders and sponsors.

These part-nerships will enable and stimulate knowledge exchange, as well as co-pro-duction and application of our research.

We provide world class education services to busi-ness leaders. Our training programs are intended to solve real emerging issues in the dynamic competi-tive business environment.

Many have also transformed a number of their business processes and work prac-tices, working towards supporting data driven and evidence based decision making and performance improvement in order to be more effective in their service delivery.

This disruption has affected executives in such a way that many of them have assumed higher leadership positions and have to interface in many ways, direct-ly with the clients and other stakeholders as well as manage and supervise teams that are directly under them.

These changes present demands on organizations to source and retain better talents who demonstrate remarkable, sound knowledge and application of contemporary leadership practices, software, tools and techniques, competences in team working and supervision of staff and communication skills so as to relate the organizational position, retain old and win new customers.

Engagement, Partnerships and Collaboration

We engage actively with govern-ment, students, businesses and our community, and this is a critical fac-tor to our existence and success.

We prioritize engagement with all our stakeholders to be-come a significant and relevant institution. Engagement, partnerships and collaboration are at the heart of our mis-sion.

As we expand our business portfolio, we will engage and collaborate with new professional institutions and business communities that will be affected by our developments and activities. We intend that the impacts from our develop-ments and activities be positive and beneficial, and for us to engage in an open and respectful manner. Our vision of inspiring leadership to transform lives will extend our en-gagement and collaboration to new communities that can benefit from and be stimulated by our work.

Our students are one of our most important communities, both while they study with us and as our alumni. We will strengthen the importance of the student voice and en-gagement in informing what we do. This will create strong and improved ties with both current students and alumni that will continue to reinforce and expand our contribution to these communities.

We are mindful of the important role MAT ABACUS plays in the country and region. Our involvement and contribu-tion to the education sector and other sectors will inform our future strategy. We believe we can do more in ways that complement Uganda and Africa’s growth and development.

We will work closely with employers and engage with busi-nesses, including Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), as well as policymakers and other agents of social and economic change and development, including charities, NGOs and international organizations. We will strengthen these ties, building innovative and interdependent relation-ships that inform and stimulate our research and teaching.

MAT ABACUS’ leaders work closely with government, business and industry to understand the changing needs of the la-bour economy and innovation agenda.

Consultation with these sectors forms part of the review pro-cess of many programs, and ensuring that they are re-sponsive to these needs, making them highly relevant and effective.

Student Learning and Experience

Student experience and learning lie at the heart of what we do, at MAT ABACUS we want to be excellent in teach-ing and learning for the highest quality and to the highest satisfaction.

Our Teaching Methodology

Students are attracted to our distinctive, pragmatic and collaborative approach to learning and teaching. Students have op-portunities to learn in small groups, peer-to-peer engagements and under the ex-pert guidance of leading academics and researchers—this creates a unique educa-tion experience.

Research Skills

Students at MAT ABACUS develop their re-search and analytical skills from undergrad-uate level and have the chance to embrace the rigor of scientific method, learning the value of innovation and problem solving skills.

Diversity and Multiculturalism

Our approach to inclusiveness, understand-ing and respect for all people from different backgrounds is one of the reasons our stu-dents feel safe while at MAT ABACUS.

Diverse Program Portfolio

Students, business executives and other stakeholders can benefit from our rich array of programs – professional, executive, aca-demic, research, vocational and technical.

We shall acquire learning partnerships with the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply (CIPS), Institute of Chartered Sec-retaries and Administrators (ICSA), Project Management Institute (PMI) and Chartered

Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) to in-crease our tuition offering for professional education.

Digital Learning Platforms (e-learn-ing and e-library)

The student learning experience will be en-hanced through greater access to digital and e-learning platforms and resources. These technologies support and assist personal-ized learning and accessibility to a wider student community, but do not replace the quality, face-to-face education delivered on campus.
