Sustainability Report 2013 Mastra Industries Sdn Bhd, Malaysia Mastra Industires Sdn Bhd, situated in Port Klang, Malaysia produces diuron and formulates herbicides and insecticides The plant Mastra Industries Sdn.Bhd is located at Lot 6, Jalan Sultan Mohamed 5, Kawasan Perindustrian Bandar Sultan Suleiman, 42000, Port Klang. It is situated 1.5 km from the North Port, which is one of the busiest ports in Malaysia or 45 km from the city of Kuala Lumpur. The plant manufactures diuron, formulates herbicides and glyphosate for local and export markets. The site also formulates and packages glyphosate for Japanese market. We had made some improvements in our SC plant. We replaced conventional powder charging methods with a vacuum suction system. This has reduced charging time from 180 minutes to 20 minutes; at the same time we have managed to reduced dust problems and avoided the manual handling problems of the past. Health and safety performance We have operated for 10 years without a lost time injury and two medical treatment injuries (2006 and 2011); however we have recorded four first aid injuries in 2012. This achievement is due to the constant commitment from all levels of employees to health, safety and environment. Our rehabilitation program for injured workers has been in place for two years. The graph shows the historical injury performance over the past 10 years. 0 1 2 3 4 5 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 Lost time Medical treatment Injuries per million hours worked Safety award Safety improvement suggestion award Environmental management We now fully meet the local environment guideline after one of our staff members was certified as an environmental professional in scrubber operations. As per requirement, all the scrubber systems need to indicate their performance by monitoring certain parameters. Instrumentation is being used to measure the scrubber variables, all the monitoring data is being is held in our record keeping system. To further enhance the scheduled waste handling from the waste generator to facility operator, another guideline has been enforced by the Malaysia government, through the Department of Environment (DOE), called as DOE E – Consignment Note (ECN). This application, uses email as an initial notification to the Department of Environment (DOE) of any scheduled wastes generated, and keeps up-to-date the inventory of scheduled waste generated, treated and disposed of. Waste generators are required to fill in the information as in the sixth schedule to comply with the requirements of the Regulation 12, Environmental Quality (Scheduled Wastes) Regulations, 2005. We fully comply with the above requirements. In 2012, we achieved 2,392,821hours worked without a lost time injury. Again, this outstanding performance and achievement is due to hard work and the commitment of our people towards health, safety and the environment. We will continue to treat health, safety and environmental performance as a key value in our business. Safety is one of the key elements in operating our business. To sustain the health, safety and environmental performance on our site we have to progressively improve the working environment at the workplace. Every year we receive “suggestion for improvement” from our people. This year, three entries have received this award. It goes to Asly Bahar, Nik Yusran and Darmasyah Putra. Our managing director, Andy Yeo presented the company award during the company trip. They were given gift vouchers amounting to RM200.00 together with a certificate. WastesOur site is committed to minimising waste generation from our operations. Most of the waste taken from site is empty, clean packaging, and drums that are sent for recycle. Some liquids and solid waste that contains agricultural chemicals is sent for incineration.Compared to the previous years, the waste sent to incinerator has increase due to customer waste. We formulate and pack customers’ product at our site, the waste that is generated from their work is captured in our database.

We are relatively a small user. The electricity user is higher compared to previous years is due to increase in production volume. We have a program in place to change all existing florescent and flood light to T5 and LED on replacement basis. As of now, our power factor is at the optimum level.

Water is one of the component uses in our process. Our site is conscious of the need to conserve water; as part of our water conservation program we recycle vessel washings to the next formulations for the same product. If you look at the graph there is an increase in water usage for this year due to increase in production volume. There is a substantial amount of water usage at SC plant. We have managed to secure a new order that unfortunately requires substantial amounts of water.

ExpenditureThis year substantial amount has been spent on monitoring and some for ongoing training. The Industry Code of Practice for Safe Working in Confined Space 2010 (ICOP 2010) recommends that all employees who are involved in Confined Space operation should undergo training in Confined Space entry on a safety course approved by the Director General and pass the examination. Employees involved in Confined Space activity need to attend Authorized Entrant and Standby Person (AESP) training at NIOSH.

Several people have been sent to NIOSH for competency programs on Confined Space Entry. We fully comply with the above requirements.
