JOhN hOAG – IN LIvING COLORAugust 6-29A transplant from Vermont to Decatur, Hoag breathes life into his artwork with color and lively brushwork. His human subjects, captured in real life moments, convey powerful attitudes and feelings, vulnerability and intimate relationships between figure and surroundings. His landscapes of Illinois, Vermont and Mexico are charged with a rich vibrancy, influenced by his attraction to Latin American color aesthetics.

Hoag holds an MFA in painting and drawing from the University of Notre Dame, Indiana. His professional expe-riences range from custom framer to scenic artist for the movie “A League of Their Own” to teaching art in numerous college settings.

JOhN ZhANG LONG: ThE NEO REALISMSeptember 4-28Part of the famous 1985 New Wave Movement in Chinese art, John Zhang Long, initiated an exhibition he called “The New Realism.” A turning point of the Modernist art movement in a country that had been dominated by Social Realism, the exhibit incorporated Western styles such as abstraction and symbolism. While the work Mr. Zhang produced and promot-ed was considered avant-garde and revolutionary at the time, Chairman Mao later recalled it as focusing on “the true heart, true spirit” of China.

Mr. Zhang immigrated to America in 1993 and has since been heavily influenced by American contemporary art, especially abstract art. An interna-tionally rec-ognized fig-ure among contempo-rary Chinese artists, he developed a painting style that merges both West-ern and Eastern philosophies and artistic techniques. A prolific artist, he has experimented with oil and ink painting, sculpture and contemporary bronze wares. His work has been exhibited globally across Asia, Europe and America. In 2016 The Art Institute of Chicago featured a solo exhibition of his work, some of which is now part of their collection.

Our sincere thanks goes to Dr. Yu Wang from the US-China Cultural Arts Exchange Association in Rantoul for facilitating and curating the exhibit.
