The key to mastering blonde formulation is to select the correct tonal shade. Decide what shade or tone of blonde the client would like to see in her hair. Is it a warm or cool blonde, a platinum blonde, strawberry blonde? Make sure to have a clear expectation of the desired tone and level of lightness.

Start by determining the natural level of your clients’ hair. Keep the PRAVANA swatch book handy as a reference tool to confirm the starting natural level of the blonde for formulation. If the hair falls between levels when determining the natural starting level, always formulate from the darker level when going lighter. This will help to avoid unwanted warmth in your end result and ensure you achieve the desired lift.

IDENTIFYING THE UNDERLYING PIGMENT OF YOUR NATURAL HAIR COLOR

Once the natural level has been determined, it is essential to identify the underlying pigment at this level. As hair is lightened, the underlying color of the hair becomes a factor in contributing to the final result. We refer to this as the underlying pigment of the hair.

To successfully achieve the desired target shade, the underlying pigment at the starting level will either need to be enhanced or neutralized. Making the correct choice in which hair color to use coupled with the appropriate developer for the amount of lift needed, can produce the desired outcome.

For virgin hair, the final result is determined by the underlying pigment and the artificial pigment. When dealing with previously colored hair, the final result is determined by the underlying pigment of the new growth, the existing artificial pigment and the artificial pigment in the formula.

THE COLOR WHEEL To effectively understand the nature of hair color tones, we should think in terms of primary colors: Red, Yellow and Blue and secondary colors: Orange, Violet and Green. Express Tones Clear is provided to mix with the other tones when less deposit is desired for levels 9 and 10. What about the other side of blonding? As any honey, ash, golden or global blonde knows, at some point, the color fades, becomes flat and/or loses its full multi-dimensional look. To add dimension to blonde hair, sometimes a stylist needs to go back in and add some darker shades to lowlight and add drama to the overly-lightened hair.

If the target shade is between level 6-8 and happens to be in the target tones of Neutral, Gold or Copper, PRAVANA also offers its Lowlight Collection, a collection of 6 shades that are pre-blended with replenishing tones. 1. Section the hair into quadrants. Starting in the nape, part out your first section diagonal-back from the back of the ear to the nape.

2. Starting in the mid-shaft, gently pat the Pure Light Balayage Lightener, stroking the product upwards onto the surface of the hair. Finish each section by using the Pure Light Balayage Palette to saturate the ends.

3. Work from side-to-side moving up the back sections, taking alternating diagonal-back and diagonal-forward partings, and working the product onto the surface of the hair.

4. Pull each section down, perpendicular to the parting while painting Pure Light Balayage Lightener onto the hair to create a fuller coverage of the section.

5. As you begin to reach the top of the head, take smaller sections. Divide this section into two triangular sections from the center-bottom to the start of the parietal ridge.

6. Finish working through the back up to the crown.

7. Create two triangle sections from the crown to the apex. Pull these sections back, perpendicular to the front parting. Apply Pure Light Balayage Lightener to the surface of each section.

8. Work into the sides, beginning above the ear, create a diagonal-back parting. Gently apply Pure Light Balayage Lightener to the surface of the section. Alternate diagonal-back to diagonal-forward sectioning into the top of the head, leaving out a diamond section in the fringe.

9. Divide the final diamond section in the fringe into 4 triangular sections around the natural parting. Pulling the sections back, apply Pure Light Balayage Lightener gently to the surface of each section.

10. Process until the desired lightness is achieved.

11. Shampoo the hair with any NEVO Shampoo, rinse, and towel dry the hair. Apply desired Express Tones Toner shade starting in the back at the scalp and working up towards the front, then working the color through the more porous mid-shaft and ends. Process until desired tone is achieved. Rinse and condition the hair with any NEVO Conditioner. Style as desired.

For shorter hair or hair that is heavily layered, we suggest feathered striations of lightener using a diamond-shape sectioning technique. This helps to blend the cut and add length. This is a more advanced technique that creates the most subtle overall lightening effect. Work from side to side moving up the back sections, taking alternating diagonal-back and diagonal-forward partings, and working the product onto the surface of the hair. Pull each section down, perpendicular to the parting while painting Pure Light Balayage Lightener onto the hair to create a fuller coverage of the section.

2. Starting in the nape, take ½” horizontal slices, apply darkest shade from the scalp to the top of the mid-shaft.

3. With a strong sweeping motion, apply the next intermediate shade to the mid-shaft, overlapping 2” over the darker shade and through the length, leaving out 2”- 3” on the ends.

4. Apply Pure Light Balayage Lightener or 000 through the ends, overlapping with a strong sweeping motion onto the intermediate shade. As you work up the head, the darkest, intermediate and lightest shade should vary in length, creating a soft fluctuation of color and depth.

1. Divide the hair into quadrants.

2. Starting in the nape, and working side-to-side, take a diagonal-back macro stitch. Apply Pure Light Power Lightener, feathering the application nearest the scalp.

3. Next, take a diagonal-forward slice. Apply Pure Light Power Lightener, feathering the application nearest the scalp. Continue working up the head alternating diagonal-back macro-stitches and diagonal-forward slices. Stop right before you reach the crown.

Identify the natural level of the hair to determine the underlying pigments you will need to consider for your formulation. When the natural level sits between two levels, choose the darker of the two as your starting point. When less lift and more tonal control is desired from your base-break, formulate with a lower-level developer.

Apply Ultra Hi-Lifts Formula to the regrowth. Process until desired lightness and tonal deposit is achieved. When using a lower volume developer the processing time will increase.

Shampoo the hair with any PRAVANA NEVO shampoo.

Starting in the back and working towards the front, apply Express Tones Formula to damp, towel-dried hair. Process 5 minutes.

Rinse well and condition using any PRAVANA NEVO conditioner. Style as desired.

Base-breaking is a common technique used in the salon to break up the contrast of highlights and the natural base without the need for a lengthy double-process. However, for some, there’s a fear of hot roots. With the right color selection and choice of developer, you can break through the fear of brass. PRAVANA has created a product and education to ensure successful, predictable base-breaking every time.

Section out the hair with zig-zag partings; top, sides, and back.

Starting in the nape and working up, create horizontal subsection with zig-zag partings, stitch out strands and back-comb. Using a PRAVANA Meche as a barrier, feather Pure Light Power Lightener onto the hair. As you reach the top of the head, gradually start to stitch out finer strands.

Repeat the same technique and application through the sides, taking finer stitches around the hairline.

In the top, work around the head alternating vertical and horizontal sub-sections with zig-zag partings. Stitch out strands, back-comb the hair, and feather the Pure Light Power Lightener formula onto the hair.

Process until desired lightness is achieved. Shampoo and condition the hair with THE PERFECT BLONDE Shampoo and Conditioner to eliminate any residual brassiness.
