Master of Teaching Pathway Requirements

Students should consider the following:

• For entry into the Master of Teaching (Secondary), you are required to complete at least

one major and one minor learning area aligned to the Australian Curriculum at

undergraduate level.

1. A major learning area consists of a minimum of six courses (27 units), including a

minimum of two advanced courses (AQF Level 3).

2. A minor learning area consists of a minimum of four courses (18 units), including a

minimum of two intermediate courses (AQF Level 2)

• Courses need to be clearly planned and aligned with the appropriate year level i.e.

Introductory courses are AQF Level 1, Intermediate courses are AQF Level 2 and Advanced

courses are AQF Level 3. This ensures the courses align with the standards required by

Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL).

• Please submit your proposed study plan for approval to your Program Director. If your

program has not been identified as a guaranteed pathway but you are interested in the

Master of Teaching, please also seek further advice from your Program Director.

Program Directors in UniSA Justice and Society and UniSA Creative are:

MBAA: Dr Jonathan Crichton

MBCD: Ms Rebecca Somerfield

MBME: Dr Josh McCarthy

MBJR: Dr Bonita Mason

Key Terms

Below is a glossary of key terms used within this information handbook.

Course – each course you undertake at UniSA is normally 4.5 units. Some larger courses are 9 units.

If you are a full-time student, you would generally complete four courses per semester (18 units).

Program – your UniSA program is made up from a selection of courses. A full-time student will

generally complete eight courses per year (36 units). A three-year (full time) degree equates to 108

units.

AQF Level – All courses offered within UniSA degrees must align appropriately with the Australian

Quality Framework (AQF). First year courses are generally Level 1 (introductory), second year

courses Level 2 (intermediate) and third or fourth-year courses are Level 3 (advanced).

Major - A sequence of eight courses (36 units) within your chosen program. A major generally

consists of two introductory courses (AQF Level 1), two intermediate courses (AQF Level 2) and four

advanced courses (AQF Level 3).

Minor – A sequence of four courses (18 units) within your program. A minor generally includes a

minimum of two intermediate courses (AQF Level 2).

Major Learning Area (Teaching Pathway) - A ‘major learning area’ is a group of courses (6 – 10

courses) which provides you with advanced knowledge in this field aligned to the Australian

Curriculum. To be eligible to move through the Master of Teaching Pathway you will require one

‘major learning area’ and one ‘minor learning area’.

Minor Learning Area (Teaching Pathway) - A ‘minor learning area’ is a group of courses (minimum

of 4 courses) which provides you with intermediate knowledge in this field aligned to the Australian

Curriculum. To be eligible to move through the Master of Teaching Pathway you will require one

‘major learning area’ and one ‘minor learning area’.

Note: The Minor Learning Area of Psychology requires the completion of 6 courses.
