INTRODUCTION&OVERVIEWWestVirginiaUniversity’sSchoolofSocialWorkbegantrainingsocialworkersintheearly1930’s.Wehavebeeninconstantoperationsincethattime.BoththeBachelorofSocialWorkandtheMasterofSocialWorkdegreeprogramsarefullyaccreditedbytheCouncilonSocialWorkEducation(CSWE).ABachelorofSocialWork(BSW)preparesstudentsforgeneralistpractice,andaMasterofSocialWork(MSW)preparesstudentsforadvancedintegratedpracticewithindividuals,families,groups,communities,andorganizations.SCHOOLOFSOCIALWORKMISSIONSTATEMENTThroughteaching,research,andservice,themissionoftheWestVirginiaUniversitySchoolofSocialWorkistoeducatestudentstobecomegeneralistsocialworkersatthebaccalaureatelevelandadvancedintegratedpracticesocialworkersatthemaster’slevel.TheSchoolofSocialWorkmissionisgroundedinthepurposeofthesocialworkprofessionwhichisto“promotehumanandcommunitywell‐being”(CouncilonSocialWorkEducation[CSWE],2015p.5).Ourbaccalaureateandgraduateprogramsare“guidedbyaperson‐in‐environmentframework,aglobalperspective,respectforhumandiversity,andknowledgebasedonscientificinquiry”(CSWE2015,p.5).Ourprogramsvalue“socialandeconomicjustice,thepreventionofconditionsthatlimithumanrights,theeliminationofpoverty,andtheenhancementofthequalityoflifeforallpersons,locallyandglobally”(CSWE2015,p.5).OurBSWandMSWprogramsarefurthergroundedinthecoresocialworkvaluesofservice,socialjustice,thedignityandworthoftheperson,theimportanceofhumanrelationships,integrity,competence,humanrights,andscientificinquiry.Thesevaluesunderpincurriculaandframeourcommitmenttopeopleandtheadvancementofsocialandeconomicjustice(CSWE,2015).MSWPROGRAMMISSIONThemissionoftheMSWprogramistoeducatestudentstobecomeadvancedintegratedpracticesocialworkers.Thespecializationinadvancedintegratedpracticebuildsongeneralistpracticeandpreparesstudentstointegratemicro,mezzo,andmacropracticeskillsacrossservicesectorsandwithininterdisciplinaryteamstoeffectivelyaddresssocialandhumanproblemspertinenttoawiderangeofprofessionalpracticeareas.Advancedintegratedpracticeprovidesanintegrativeapproachtosocialworkwherestudentsarepreparedforbothdirectpracticeandadministrativeroles.

STRUCTUREAllstudentswillspecializeinAdvancedIntegratedPractice.Thecurriculumpreparesstudentstointegratemicro,mezzo,andmacropracticeskillsacrossservicesectorsandwithininterdisciplinaryteamstoeffectivelyaddresssocialandhumanproblemsacrossawiderangeofpracticeareas,withaparticularemphasisoneffectivemodelsofruralservicedelivery.ThisupdatetothecurriculumwillprepareWVUMSWgraduatestobewell‐rounded,advancedpractitionerswhocanrespondtothecomplexrealitiesofpracticeinavarietyofrolesandsettings.Full‐timeAdvancedstandingstudentswhohavealreadyearnedaBSWfromaCSWEAccreditedUniversitybegininMayandcompletetheirdegreeinonecalendaryear(12months).Part‐timeAdvancedStandingandfull‐andpart‐timeRegularstandingstudents(thosewhohaveearnedaBachelor’sdegreeinanotherfieldofstudy)wouldstartinthefall.Part‐timeAdvancedStandingstudentsfinishinthesummeraftertheirsecondyearofclasses,andpart‐timeRegularStandingstudentsfinishinthesummeraftertheirthirdyearofclasses.BoththeBSWandtheMSWprogramsarenationallyaccreditedbytheCouncilforSocialWorkEducation(CSWE).MSWPROGRAMGOALSGraduatesoftheMSWprogramwillbepreparedto:

1. Formulateandimplementintegratedservicedeliverymodelsappropriatetoadvancedpracticewithdiverseclientpopulationsatmulti‐systemlevels.

2. Designandconductbriefand/oron‐goingassessmentandinterventionmethodsconsistentwithintegratedsystemsandcontextofpractice.

3. Constructanintegratedevidence‐informedtheoreticalframeworkappropriatetothelevelandcontextofpracticesituations.

4. Organizecollaborationwithotherprofessionstocoordinateinterventioneffortssuitabletothepracticesituation.

5. Designandconductcollaborative,practice‐basedevaluationmethodsandapplyfindingstoimprovepractice,policy,and/orservicedeliveryeffectiveness.

FIELDEDUCATION

OverviewofFieldEducationFieldEducationisanintegralpartoftheprofessionalsocialworkcurriculumandrequiresaclosecooperativerelationshipbetweentheSchoolofSocialWorkandtheselectedfieldsiteswhoacceptourstudentsfortheinternshipexperience.StudentshavetheopportunitytocompletetheirfieldinternshipswithagenciesthroughoutWestVirginiaandadjacentareas.FieldeducationhasbeendesignatedbytheCouncilonSocialWorkEducation(CSWE)asthe“signaturepedagogy”andasequaltothecourseworkinsocialworkhighereducation.Experientiallearningcomplementstheclassroomlearningandgivesthestudenttheopportunitytobuildasenseofprofessionalcompetenceandidentitythatservesasafoundationforongoingprofessionalgrowth.

Fieldinstructionprovidesthestudentwithanopportunitytotestclassroomknowledgeaswellastodevelopandrefineadvanced‐practiceskills.FieldinstructionopportunitiesareavailablethroughoutWestVirginiaandadjacentareasaswellasinaselectnumberofsettingsoutsidetheregion.

TheMSWFieldExperiencerequiresthatregular‐standing*studentscompletea312contacthour(onsiteplusseminarhours)GeneralistFieldExperienceeitherduringorimmediatelyfollowingtheirGeneralistcourseworkinthefirstyearoftheprogram.TheMSWGeneralistFieldExperienceprovidesthestudentwithopportunitiesandexperienceswhichdemonstratethemultipleandvariedrolesthatsocialworkersperform,aswellastheday‐to‐dayoperationswithinsocial,humanandhealthcareagencies,programsandorganizations.Studentsmustcompleteaminimumof16hours(2days)perweekattheplacementsite,duringtheusualweekday,daytimeoperatinghoursofthesite,andattend12contacthoursofseminarduringtheplacementperiodforatotalof312hours.

TheMSWAdvancedFieldExperienceoccursduringallMSWstudents’finalyearoftheprogram,andconsistsof600on‐sitecontacthoursplus12hoursofseminar,atanaveragerateof16‐20hoursperweek,duringtheusualoperatinghoursoftheagency.StudentsinAdvancedPlacementareexpectedtoconcentratemoreintensivelyandautonomouslyinlevelsofinterventionforadvancedintegratedpractice.Theadvancedplacementismeanttopreparethestudentforentryintosocialworkpracticeemployment,andtheexpectationisthatthestudenthasalreadygraspedthegeneralistconcepts,theories,androles,aswellasappropriateprofessionalbehavior.

StudentsinaProfessionalSocialWorkProgramareexpectedtodemonstratethecapacitytopracticewithintegrityandwithintheethicalguidelinesoutlinedwithintheNASWCodeofEthics.Increasingly,studentsandemployeesarerequiredbyfieldplacementsitesorfutureemployerstoundergoacriminalbackgroundcheck,childand/oradultprotectiveservicescheck*andinitialbaselineand/orrandomdrugscreentests,priortoengaginginfieldworkoremployment.Felonyconvictionsandsomeseriousmisdemeanorsmaynegativelyimpactastudent’sforwardprogressand/orcompletionofher/hisacademicprogramaswellasfutureprofessionallicensureandfutureemploymentwithintheSocialWorkfield.

Suchinformationcouldimpactthestudentinthefollowingareas:

ENROLLMENT

MinimumEnrollmentStudentsareexpectedtofollowtheirdegreeplanasoutlinedandshouldbecontinuouslyenrolledintherequiredcoursesforeachtermastheirplanoutlinesunlesstheyhavebeengrantedaleaveofabsence.StudentswhowishtodivertfromtheirapproveddegreeplanmusthaveapprovalfromtheiradvisorandtheMSWprogramdirectorandhaveaformalplanforcompletionoutlinedthatisagreeduponbytheadvisorandthestudent.InordertomaintainactivecandidacyintheMSWprogram,studentsmustbeenrolledinaminimumof3credithoursofcoursework,unlessgrantedaleaveofabsence(describedbelow).

CreditLoadsandLimitsNinecredithoursinthefallorspringtermandsixcredithoursinthesummertermistheminimumloadtobeconsideredafull‐timegraduatestudent.Graduatestudentsarenotpermittedtotakemorethan17hoursinatermwithouttheircollegeorschoolandbytheOfficeofGraduateEducationandLife.Nooverloadrequestswillbeconsideredforthesummerterm.Requestsformorethan18hoursinafallorspringtermwillnotnormallybeapproved.Althoughstudentsmayenrollforupto17hoursinthesummerterm,theyarestronglydiscouragedfromenrollinginmorethan12hours.

LeavesofAbsenceGraduatestudentsingoodstandingwhowishtobeawayfromtheiracademicendeavorsatWVUforoneormoresemestersbutintendtoreturnatalaterdatemayrequestaleaveofabsencefromtheSSW.RequestsforleavesofabsencemustbesubmittedinwritingtotheMSWprogramdirectorpriortothebeginningofthesemesterduringwhichleaveisbeingrequested.Afterreviewingtherequest,theMSWdirectorwilldecidewhetherornottoapprovetheleave,thelengthoftimegranted,andanyconditionsrequiredforthestudenttoreturn.Thestudentistheninformedinwritingofthedecision,andacopyisretainedinthestudent’sfile.

Non‐DegreeStudentsNon‐degreestudentsincludethosestudentstakingcoursesforenrichmentpurposes,aspartofanapprovedUniversitycertificateprogram,orforcontinuingeducation.Non‐degreestudentscanenrollinMSWcoursespendingavailabilityandwithdepartmentalapproval.Ifanon‐degreestudentislateradmittedtooneoftheMSWdegreeprograms,adepartmentaldecisionwillbemaderegardingwhetherpreviouscreditsearnedcanbeappliedtotheMSWdegree.

WithdrawalPolicyTherearetwotypesofwithdrawals:withdrawalfromindividualcoursesforwhichastudenthasregisteredandacompletewithdrawalfromtheUniversity.Deadlines,procedures,andpoliciesregardingwithdrawalsareavailableattheRegistrar’swebsite(https://registrar.wvu.edu/).Studentsareencouragedtodiscusswithdrawalswiththeiradvisorandtoconsidertheimpactofwithdrawalsontheirrequiredenrollmentanddegreeprogressaswellastheireligibilityforgraduateassistantships,financialaid,or

UptotwelvecreditsofgraduatecourseworkcompletedatWVUthroughtheseniorpetitionprocess(seetheUndergraduateCatalog)maybeappliedtograduateprogramrequirements.Individualgraduateunitsmayallowasmallermaximumnumberofpreviouslyearnedcredithourstobeappliedtotheirprogramasageneralruleandmaydeterminewhichcoursesandcreditsmayormaynotbeappliedtotheirprogrambyanindividualstudent.UponacceptancetotheSchoolofSocialWork,studentswhowouldliketosubmitarequestfortransfercreditmustsubmitarequesttotheMSWProgramDirector.Alongwiththewrittenrequest,thestudentwillneedtosubmitthecoursesyllabusandacopyoftheofficialtranscriptshowingthefinalgradeinthecourse.TheMSWprogramdirector,alongwithmembersoftheMSWProgramCommittee,willreviewtherequestandrenderadecisionregardingtheacceptanceordenialofthetransfercredit.Onceadecisionhasbeenreached,theMSWprogramdirectorwillcompletetheApplicationforTransferofGraduateCredittoWestVirginiaUniversitytotheOfficeoftheUniversityRegistrar.

IncompletesAgradeofI(Incomplete)isatemporarygradeassignmentusedwhenunforeseen,non‐academiccircumstancesarisethatprohibitstudentsfromcompletingthelastcourseassignmentsorexaminationsattheendofthesemester.ThegradeofIncompleteistypicallyassignedbecauseofanexcusedabsencefromthefinalexamination,orbecauseassignmentsareunavoidablyincomplete,asdeterminedbytheinstructor.Studentswhoarefailingacourse(exclusiveoftheincompletework)maynotrequestanIncomplete.StudentswhowanttobeconsideredforanIncompletemustapplytotheirinstructorpriortotheendoftheterm.Iftheinstructoragrees,theinstructorandthestudent

TIMELIMITS

Master’sdegreestudentsarepermittedtocontinueinaprogramforamaximumofeightyearsfollowingtheirtermofadmissiontotheprogram.Studentswhohavebeeninactive(notregisteredforanycourses)fortwoormoreyearsorwhoexceedeightyearsfollowingtheirtermofadmissionarerequiredtoapplyforreadmissiontotheUniversityandtheSSW.

Graduatecourseworkusedtomeetmaster'sdegreerequirementsmustbesatisfactorilycompletedwithinaperiodofeightyearsimmediatelyprecedingtheconferringofthedegree.Therationaleforthislimitistoensurethatstudentsearningamaster'sdegreehavecurrentknowledge(nomorethaneightyears)intheirfield.Coursescompletedinthesametermasdegreeconferral(fall,spring,summer)eightyearspreviouslyareconsideredtofallwithintheeight‐yearlimit(forexample,acoursecompletedinfall2018wouldfallwithinthelimitforfall2024degreeconferral).Acoursecompletedmorethaneightyearspriortothetermofdegreeconferralmustberevalidatedifitistobeusedtowardmeetingdegreerequirements.Revalidationcanbeaccomplishedthroughthefollowingprocedure:

Thecurrentinstructorofthecoursedeterminesthemethodusedtorevalidatethecourse.Thestudentmay,forexample,berequiredtocompletespecificactivities(suchasrepeatingallorsomeofthecourseorcompletingasetofreadings).Theinstructorthenassessesthestudent’sknowledgeofcoursematerial(throughsuchmeansasawrittenororalexamination,apaper,aproject,orsomeotherassessment)anddeterminesifthestudent’sknowledgeisadequatetojustifyrevalidationofthecourse.

ForMSWgraduateswhoareinterestedinapplyingforlicensure,theSSWsubmitsaletteryearly(typicallyduringmid‐lateMarch)totheWestVirginiaBoardofSocialwithalistofMSWgraduatesingoodstanding.Thiscanbeusedasdocumentationinlieuofadiplomaifthestudentwishestoapplytotakethelicensuretestpriortothegraduationdate.StudentswhoaregraduatingatothertimesoftheyearorwhoareseekinglicensureinstatesotherthanWestVirginiashouldcontacttheMSWprogramdirectordirectlyforrequireddocumentation.

ADVISING&EVALUATION

ORIENTATIONNewstudentorientationistypicallypriortothebeginningofclassinthefall(forRegularstandingandPart‐Timestudents)andinthesummer(forFull‐TimeAdvancedStandingstudents).StudentsaregiventheopportunitytomeetfacultyintheMSWprogram,reviewrelevantpoliciesandprocedures,aswellasanintroductiontograduatestudyintheSSW,arereviewed,andstudentsmeetwiththeiradvisorstoreviewtheirdegreeplans,completeforms,andgooveranyquestionspriortothestartoffield.ThefieldofficecoordinatesseparateorientationsforboththeGeneralistFieldinternshipandtheAdvancedFieldinternship.

ADVISINGStudentsareassignedafacultyacademicadvisor,whosejobistoassisttheminpreparingtheirscheduleandregisteringforcourses.Thisincludescompletinganynecessaryregistrationforms,add/dropcourseadjustmentforms,andpermissionformstotakeacoursecreditoverload.

Studentsalsoreceiveregularformalevaluationsfromtheirfieldinstructors,whoactastheirprimarysupervisorsintheirfieldinternships.Thepurposeofthefieldevaluationistohighlightareasofmastery,aswellasareasforcontinuedlearningasstudents,continuetodeveloptheirsocialworkpracticeskillsatthemicro,mezzo,andmacrolevels.

STANDARDS

GPAStudentsarerequiredtohaveaminimumoverallGPAof3.0.AnycourseinwhichastudentreceivesaCmustberepeated.AllgraduatecoursesmustbecompletedwithagradeofBorbetter;studentsmayrepeatanycourseforwhichthefinalgradeislessthanBonetimeonly.StudentswhoreceivelessthanaBaftertakingacourseintheMSWprogramforthesecondtimewillbedismissedfromtheprogram.StudentsarerequiredtomaintainanoverallminimumGPAof3.00(onafour‐pointscale)tocontinueintheprogram,tobeeligibleforfieldinstruction,andtobeeligibleforgraduation.

StandardsforAcademicandProfessionalBehaviorTheprimarygoaloftheMSWprogramintheSchoolofSocialWorkistopreparehelpingprofessionalsthatcanprovidethehighestpossiblequalityofservicetotheirclients,whichoftenincludesomeofthemostvulnerablemembersofsociety.Assuch,itiscrucialthatourgraduatesadheretotheacademicandprofessionalstandardsrequiredforprofessionalpracticeandthataredescribedintheNASWCodeofEthics.Becauseoftheimportanceweplaceonethicalandprofessionalconduct,admissiontotheMSWprogramatWVUdoesnotguaranteecontinuance,especiallyifconcernsareraisedregardingastudent’sabilitytoadheretoourstandardsofacademicorprofessionalconduct.

Theschoolhasdelineatedspecificpoliciesforinterventionandconsequenceswithstudentsfortimeswhenthereareconcernsaboutacademicorprofessionalbehavior.Theseinterventions/consequencescanincludemeetingstodeterminecorrectiveactionplanswithadvisors,fieldliaisons,and/orfieldinstructors,academicprobation,suspension,ordismissalfromtheprogram.

Astudent’sacademicperformanceorconductmaybereviewed,andpotentiallyresultinterminationfromtheprogram,ifafacultymemberorfieldinstructorexpressesconcernsaboutseriousandpersistentdeficitsinacademicperformanceorviolationsoftheNASWstandardsforethicalbehavior.Examplesofreasonswhyastudentmaybeterminatedfromtheprograminclude(butarenotlimitedto)thefollowing:

Level1Ifconcernsariserelatedtoacademicperformanceorconductwithintheclassroom,thefacultymemberwhohasconcernsshouldfirstcommunicatethesedirectlytothestudentandworkwiththestudenttoimplementacorrectiveactionplan.Theymayalsonotifythestudent’sfacultyadvisoroftheissueandplan.Ifconcernsariseduringfieldplacementregardingastudent’sbehaviororconduct,theagencyfieldinstructorshouldfirstraisetheseconcernsdirectlywiththestudentandworkjointlywiththestudenttoimplementacorrectiveactionplan.Thefieldliaisonmaynotifythefielddirectoraswell.

Level3Ifconcernsaboutthestudent’sbehaviorpersistaftertherevisedactionplandeterminedduringtheLevel2meetinghasbeenimplemented,thestudent’scasewillthenbereferredtotheMSWcommitteeforanacademicreview(seesectiononacademicreviews).Iftheconcernsarerelatedtothestudent’splacement,thestudentwillnotbeallowedtocontinuewithplacementorfieldseminaruntiltheacademicreviewiscompleted.Thestudentmaybeaskedtorefrainfromattendingand/orwithdrawfromotherMSWcoursesaswell.

AcademicReviewsInsituationsinwhichastudent’scaserequiresanacademicreview,theMSWprogramdirectorwillcoordinateameetingtimeduringwhichtheMSWcommitteememberswillmeettoreviewthevariousinformationregardingastudent’sprogressintheprogramandanyconcernsthathavepromptedthereview.Thestudentwillbeinformed,inwriting,ofthetimeanddateofthereviewandinvitedtoattendaportionofthemeetinginordertoprovidethecommitteewithanyadditionalinformationhe/shefeelsisimportant.Thestudentisinvitedtobring1‐2supportperson(s)aswell.Thiscanincludefamilymembers,significantothers,oranyoneelsewhothestudentfeelsmaybeasupportandadvocatethroughtheprocess.Afterthecommitteereviewstheavailableinformationandhearsthestudent’sstatement,itwilldecideonanactionplanregardingthestudent’scontinuanceintheprogram.ThestudentwillbenotifiedofthisplaninwritingviaaletterfromtheMSWprogramdirectorwithinoneweekofthereviewmeeting.Studentshavetherighttoacopyofthewrittenminutesfromtheacademicreviewcommitteemeeting.

DISCIPLINARYACTIONS

ProbationThestudentremainseligibleforcontinuanceintheMSWprogramandinfieldplacement(ifapplicable),butremainsonaperiodofacademicprobation,thelengthofwhichisdeterminedbytheMSWcommittee.Assignmentofprobationarystatusiscontingentuponthestudent’sagreementtofollowthespecificcorrectiveactionplanrecommendedbytheMSWcommittee.Failuretofollowthisplanduringtheprobationaryperiodmayresultinasecondacademicreview,and/orsuspensionordismissalfromtheprogram.Ifthestudentisunabletoreturntohisorherpriorfieldplacement,andtheMSW

Suspension ThestudentisaskedtowithdrawfromallMSWcoursesandfieldplacement(ifapplicable)foraperiodoftimetobedeterminedbytheMSWcommittee.Duringthistime,thestudentmaypursuecourseworkinotherdepartmentsattheuniversityorotheracademicinstitutions,butmaynotenrollinanyadditionalcourseworkintheMSWprogram.Oncetheperiodofsuspensionhasfinished,asecondacademicreviewmeetingwillbeheldwiththeMSWcommitteeinordertodeterminewhetheritisappropriateforthestudenttoreturntoMSWcoursesand/orfield.Studentscanbesuspendedfromtheprogramincasesinwhichtherehasbeenapriorprobationaryperiod,andthestudenthasnotfollowedthecorrectiveactionplanorincasesinwhichthereisaseriousviolationofacademicorprofessionalstandards.SuspensionofastudentwithoutapreviousprobationaryperiodoccurswithapprovaloftheSSWdirector,thedeanoftheEberlyCollegeofArtsandSciences,andtheAssociateProvostforGraduateAcademicAffairs.

DismissalThestudentisdismissedfromtheMSWprogramandwillnotbepermittedtoregisterforanyMSWprogramcoursesorfield.Theycan,however,applyandregisterforotherprogramswithintheuniversity.Studentscanbedismissedfromtheprogramincasesinwhichtherehasbeenapreviousperiodofprobationorsuspension,andtheMSWcommitteedecidesthatthestudenthasnottakenappropriateactionstoremedythepreviousconcernsaboutacademicsorprofessionalbehaviororincasesinwhichthereisaseriousviolationofacademicorprofessionalstandards.SuspensionofastudentwithoutapreviousprobationaryorsuspensionperiodoccurswithapprovaloftheSSWdirector,thedeanoftheEberlyCollegeofArtsandSciences,andtheAssociateProvostforGraduateAcademicAffairs.

A University official has a legitimate educational interest if the official needs to review an education record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibilities for the University. Legitimate educational interests would include, but are not limited to, teaching, research, public service, and such directly supportive activities as academic advising, general counseling, therapeutic counseling, discipline, vocational counseling and job placement, financial assistance and advisement, medical services, academic assistance activities, and other activities that are generally supportive of overall goals of the institution and contribute generally to the well‐being of the entire student body.  

 

B. Upon request, to officials of another school in which a student seeks or intends to enroll. § 

99.31(a)(2). 

i. To authorized representatives of the U.S. Comptroller General, the U.S. Attorney General, the U.S. Secretary of Education, or state and local educational authorities, such as a state postsecondary authority that is responsible for supervising the university’s state‐supported education programs. Disclosures under this provision may be made, subject to the requirements of § 99.35, in connection with an audit or evaluation of federal‐ or state‐supported education programs, or for the enforcement of or compliance with federal legal requirements that relate to those programs. These entities may make further disclosures of PII to outside entities that are designated by them as their authorized representatives to conduct any audit, evaluation, or enforcement or compliance activity on their behalf. §§ 99.31(a)(3), 99.35.  

ii. In connection with financial aid for which the student has applied or which the student has received, if the information is necessary to determine eligibility for the aid, determine the amount of the aid, determine the conditions of the aid, or enforce the terms and conditions of the aid. § 99.31(a)(4).  

iii. To organizations conducting studies for, or on behalf of, the school, in order to: a) develop, validate, or administer predictive tests; b) administer student aid programs; or c) improve instruction. § 99.31(a)(6).

Asthefieldoftechnologycontinuestogrowandinnovate,socialworkersareincreasinglyfacedwithchallengesregardingtheethicaluseofsocialmediaandspecifictechnologies.WhiletheSchoolofSocialWorkrecognizesthat,increasingly,studentsandpractitionersutilizevariousaspectsoftechnologyintheirschoolwork,socialworkpractice,anddailylives,itiscrucialthatallstudentsadheretotheethicalprinciplesoutlinedintheNASWCodeofEthics.Assuch,theSSWhasdevelopedthefollowingguidelinesregardingtheuseoftechnologyintheclassroomandinfield:

Studentsshouldavoidutilizingtechnologies(suchasemail,socialmediaandnetworking,andtextmessaging)tocommunicatewithclientsforpersonalornon‐workrelatedmatters.

Studentsshouldavoidutilizingtechnologies(computers,cellphones,Smartphones,tablets,orothertechnologicaldevices)fornon‐classrelatedactivities,asthisisdisruptivetootherstudentsaswellasinstructors.

(g)Socialworkerswhousetechnologytoprovidesocialworkservicesshouldassesstheclients’suitabilityandcapacityforelectronicandremoteservices.Socialworkersshouldconsidertheclients’intellectual,emotional,andphysicalabilitytousetechnologytoreceiveservicesandtheclients’abilitytounderstandthepotentialbenefits,risks,andlimitationsofsuchservices.Ifclientsdonotwishtouseservicesprovidedthroughtechnology,socialworkersshouldhelpthemidentifyalternatemethodsofservice.(h)Socialworkersshouldobtainclients’informedconsentbeforemakingaudioorvideorecordingsofclientsorpermittingobservationofserviceprovisionbyathirdparty.(i)Socialworkersshouldobtainclientconsentbeforeconductinganelectronicsearchontheclient.Exceptionsmayarisewhenthesearchisforpurposesofprotectingtheclientorotherpeoplefromserious,foreseeable,andimminentharm,orforothercompellingprofessionalreasons.1.04Competence(a)Socialworkersshouldprovideservicesandrepresentthemselvesascompetentonlywithintheboundariesoftheireducation,training,license,certification,consultationreceived,supervisedexperience,orotherrelevantprofessionalexperience.(b)Socialworkersshouldprovideservicesinsubstantiveareasoruseinterventiontechniquesorapproachesthatarenewtothemonlyafterengaginginappropriatestudy,training,consultation,andsupervisionfrompeoplewhoarecompetentinthoseinterventionsortechniques.(c)Whengenerallyrecognizedstandardsdonotexistwithrespecttoanemergingareaofpractice,socialworkersshouldexercisecarefuljudgmentandtakeresponsiblesteps(includingappropriateeducation,research,training,consultation,andsupervision)toensurethecompetenceoftheirworkandtoprotectclientsfromharm.(d)Socialworkerswhousetechnologyintheprovisionofsocialworkservicesshouldensurethattheyhavethenecessaryknowledgeandskillstoprovidesuchservicesinacompetentmanner.Thisincludesanunderstandingofthespecialcommunicationchallengeswhenusingtechnologyandtheabilitytoimplementstrategiestoaddressthesechallenges.(e)Socialworkerswhousetechnologyinprovidingsocialworkservicesshouldcomplywiththelawsgoverningtechnologyandsocialworkpracticeinthejurisdictioninwhichtheyareregulatedandlocatedand,asapplicable,inthejurisdictioninwhichtheclientislocated.1.05CulturalAwarenessandSocialDiversity(a)Socialworkersshouldunderstandcultureanditsfunctioninhumanbehaviorandsociety,recognizingthestrengthsthatexistinallcultures.(b)Socialworkersshouldhaveaknowledgebaseoftheirclients'culturesandbeableto
