4)PresentationoftheMasterinLifeSciences:IntegratedImmunology

The master program Integrated Immunology is implemented by the Department of Biology, theFacultyofMedicineand theUniversityHospitalErlangen. It is taught inEnglishandwillprovide indepth knowledge about basic, translational and clinical concepts in immunology. In addition, anadvanced knowledge in molecular and cellular biology will be provided to enable a betterunderstanding of immunological processes and their molecular and cellular basis. Through basiclectures, seminars and tutorials the students will actively participate in acquiring a detailedunderstandingofthecomplexinterplayofcellsintheimmunesystemandtheroleofimmunologyinhealth and disease. The theoretical modules are combined with integrated laboratory coursesenabling the students to plan, perform and interpret immunological experiments. Elective softskillcourses in imaging, bioinformatics, and animal sciences will allow the students to deepen theirknowledgeaccordingtotheirindividualinterests.Furthermore, aclinicalimmunologymodule, whichincludesbedsidevisitsindifferentclinicsoftheUniversityHospitalErlangenwilldemonstratehowanimpairedimmuneresponsecantriggerautoimmunepathologyinhumans, whichtherapeuticoptionsareavailabletotreatthepatientsandhowimmunomodulatorytherapiesareusedtotreatinfectionsand cancer. Mentoring programs will ensure the success of the learning process of individualstudentsandallowthemtoconstantlyinteractwiththeteachingpersonnel.Basedonthisknowledgethe students will realize the need for future research in immunology and will start to developresearchstrategieswhichcanaddresstheseopenquestionsinthemodulespracticalandtheoreticalprojectwork.Toexposethestudentstotheglobalcharacterofimmunologicalresearch, themodulepractical projectworkwill include a threemonth stay in a laboratory abroad, whichwill help thestudents to start building a network and foster social skills. Through the participation in awinterschool in immunology, international conferences, and meetings with professors and scientistsworkingincompanies, thestudentswilllearntoidentifyfuturecareeroptionsandhowtousetheirnetwork to findapositionof interest. In the6monthmaster thesis thestudentswilldemonstratethat the theoretical and practical knowledge they have acquired allows them to address animmunologicalquestionindependentlywithstateoftheartimmunologicalmethods.
