Cultural Heart
This thesis focuses on the rural community of Waikanae that is currently heavily reliant on State Highway One running from Wellington to Levin. Cutting directly through the town centre, it defines the town centre and sustains a soon to be dwindling economy. A new expressway will divert this main thoroughfare west of the township, creating a deep scar in the cultural heart of the community.
Design proposes to relocate the town centre along the Waikanae River which, although an important amenity for the community, has till now been profoundly neglected. The proposal addresses the river’s edge. It uses the river to connect amenities and draws on agricultural processes to create new industries, thereby reviving the cultural heart of the beautiful coastal township of Waikanae.
In illustrating how one can identify the loss of cultural heart in a rural setting such as Waikanae develops a methodology in how this urban design theory can rejuvenate the populations that suffer from a industry, sense of community and landscape qualities is of grave importance today on the Kapiti Coast and in wider New Zealand.

Victoria University of WellingtonTown Centre Initial Hunch
The existing town centre relies heavily on the traffic from State Highway One to create a its streetscape and to creates lack a of ‘welcoming’ into the township. The division created by the highway and railway, lack of identity, and internalised mall structure are very influential. The intensified town
centre creates an urban framework of integrated waterways that filtrates the vegetation while creating linkages throughout the district. This hunch asks the question;
What if the town relied on the river not the road for its sustenance? Proposed Hunch Condition

The idea of the ‘products of the region are a reflection on the quality of the landscape’ and bringing the community together by actually touching the landscape then using that to create an economy. Perhaps in practice it is not very strong financially viable at first or the conventional approach, however this is a concept that
ties together the landscape to the community while intensifying the connection to our agricultural systems and the impacts we have. What if tourism became more than just an economic driver and actually gave back to the landscape and community?

La Promenade de L’Anse de Landroanec
ENSNP is a landscape engineering school located in Central France that is renowned for its pragmatic approach to nature and the landscape. This project was based on man-made lake by Mur-de-Bretagne, which is a site of national
significance. The project focused on how to treat a site that currently contains limited design problems insofar the design conceptualized a site sensitive approaches that favored minimal consilient design strategies.

Internship - 3 Months - ParisAgence RADAR Paysage
Directors Sabrina Hiridjee and Laurence Camel (from École nationale Supérieure d’architecture de Versailles) established Agence RADAR landscape architecture in 2011. Located in the North of Paris, the agence has a passion for innovative and hybrid solutions in achieving their vision of the
landscape. This vision integrates the landscape within the built environment, while placing a emphasis on the relationships between the scientific and artistic, social and subjective, and most important is the real and the imaginary.

Majoring in Landscape Architecture
Bachelor of Architectural Studies
My understanding of landscape architecture was initiated through Victoria University of Wellington. Over this three year period of my undergraduate degree, the school of architecture taught many crucial skills in architecture, urban design and most importly landscape architecture.
This reinforced confidence in this field of knowledge and created a holistic understanding of the landscape and the landscape ecology. VUW places a strong emphasis on resilience design, communication, integration with architects/interior architects and engineers.
Detailed Design & ConstructionPipitea Precinct This scheme accommodates for the increase in people while emphasising a
playful and integrated design that incorporates all types of transport. This was done through the use of fluid pathways over the entire site to pull together the main destinations in the surrounding area and making the present unoccupied concourse into an eventful and lively atmosphere.
