Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is designed around the belief

that, as a teacher, your goal is to create learning environments

As a candidate for the MAT, you will gain the skills and practical

experiences needed to ensure academic achievement and

success for all of your students.

Small, discussion-based classrooms inspire a more interactive wayof learning.

With an average class size of 15 students, our discussion and activity-based format providesa vibrant learning environment. Theory and real-world experiences are integrated, building theknowledge and skills needed for success as a teacher.

Our program is designed to make graduate study possible and convenient for working adults.Each seven-week class meets just once a week, enabling you to fit academics into yourprofessional and personal schedules. We have rolling admissions and enrollment opportunitiesmultiple times per year, which help to accelerate the completion of your graduate degree. Theprogram is designed to be completed within two years.

Our Boston campus is located in the heart of the Longwood Medical and Academic Area,adjacent to some of the most respected health care institutions, for-profit employers andcultural centers in the city. Emmanuel’s proximity to this world-renowned area has allowed theCollege to form strategic partnerships to enhance the degrees and certificates offered throughthe Graduate and Professional Programs.

Our graduate program faculty is comprised of experienced and highly respected teachers who share their knowledge andexperience with you.

When you participate in our MAT program, you work with full-time faculty and successfulpractitioners who are experts in the field of education and bring their extensive and practicalexperience to every class. Combining current knowledge and theory, faculty members directlyaddress the needs and realities of today’s schools in ways that go far beyond typical textbooklearning.

Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)(11 courses/36 credits)

The program is designed to meet the requirements of the Massachusetts Department ofElementary and Secondary Education for an initial teaching license at the elementarylevel (grades 1-6) or secondary level (grades 5-8 or grades 8-12). Candidates must passthe following Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) prior to formalacceptance into the student teaching practicum:

ELEMENTARY CANDIDATES• Communication and Literacy Skills• General Curriculum• Foundations of Reading

SECONDARY CANDIDATES• Communication and Literacy Skills• Subject Matter

In order to assist students in preparing for the Communication and Literacy Skills test,we provide test preparation sessions free of charge to our students. The sessions,designed to prepare students for the November or March MTEL, are offered for sixconsecutive weeks prior to each exam.

A PERSONAL APPROACH TO DEGREE PLANNING

Integral to an Emmanuel College education is our advising program. From the momentyou start the application process, you’ll work with an enrollment counselor who willguide you through your application and enrollment. Once you enroll, an academicadvisor will be assigned to guide you throughout your program of study.

Advisors assist students by:

• Interpreting academic policies and guidelines and providing examples as appropriate

• Providing continuity in monitoring progress

• Evaluating transcripts from prior learning for Emmanuel credit

• Meeting with students as requested and guiding them as their goals change

• Auditing transcripts to determine graduation eligibility and honors
