WRITERS ON WRITING Each year, the Master of Arts in English program sponsors Writers on Writing events to showcase writers, poets, and editors from across the United States. These events allow authors to talk about their writing process, share stories, and conduct question and answer sessions. Recent guests include novelist, Elizabeth Berg; nationally recognized poets, Lenard D. Moore, Meg Kearney, and Samuel Hazo; as well as editors and award-winning children’s writers. PUBLISHING INSTITUTEJoin fellow writers for a day-long event exploring the many facets of publishing. Learn more about query letters, custom publishing, writing communities, and landing the first book deal. Plus, practice pitching a project with an agent. HOW TO APPLYThe program is open to both women and men.

Application Deadlines:

• August 1 (for fall term)

• December 1 (for spring term)

• May 1 (for summer term)

To apply for admission, students are required to submit the following materials to the Office of Graduate Admissions at Mount Mary University:

• Application and application fee online at mtmary.edu/ma-english

• Official transcripts for all undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, and graduate work; applicants must have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0

• Two to three writing samples

• Career goals statement

• Three letters of recommendation from professionals and/or professors able to comment on abilities and commitment

• Resume (recommended)

• Interview with Program Director

All applicants must meet minimum graduate school requirements to qualify. The GRE is not required unless a student does not meet the minimum academic requirements.

ABOUT THE PROGRAMMount Mary University’s Master of Arts in English is a 30-credit program that offers two areas of study: Professional and New Media Writing, and Creative Writing.

Accreditation

The Mount Mary University Master of Arts in English program is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges.

Completion Time

A student taking six to nine credits each semester can complete the program within two years. Students have a maximum of seven years to complete the program.

PROGRAM DETAILSA minimum of 30 credits is required for the Master of Arts in English program, including:

• 9 credits in required writing workshop courses

• 6 credits in required literature courses

• 12-15 credits in a selected specialized area of study

• 3 credits of thesis supervision

An optional internship may be taken for three credits.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIESThe program provides internship opportunities with area businesses and non-profits. Internships are an excellent way to strengthen your knowledge, network with industry leaders, and gain professional experience. Internships are optional but a recommended component of the master’s program.
