Martial Arts Perspective

The significance behind the way that students line up in Tae Kwon Do class represents respect for senior ranks, as well as the philosophy that one should "lead from the front". Each line should be able to look at the students in front of them and see greater and greater examples of skill and effort. As a Black belt, you stand closest to the front and have the greatest responsibility to serve as a role model.

On the one hand, it is important to set the example for all of the big things - kihapping and training with intensity and demonstration high levels of techniques. However, you must also be equally diligent about setting the right example for the smaller moments such as how you handle a loss in a competition, boards not breaking at a level test, and even how respectfully you bow to your seniors and instructors at special events outside of the school. Be sure to lead by example all of the time and others will follow your lead.

Life Skill Perspective

Our actions, words, and example are on display to others much of each day. In a very short period of time people will make judgments about our abilities, attitude and character based on how we represent ourselves. No element is too small to consider. Make it a habit of dressing for success, carrying yourself with good posture, and speaking kindly of others both when they are and are not present. Conduct yourself as though your words and deeds are on display and your relationships and reputation will benefit. People like to follow a leader whose example they admire and respect.

Falling & RollingFront Fall

Step 1: Extend both arms out horizontally, “HANA.”Step 2: Squat down and bring both arms forming a triangular position, “DUL.”Step 3: Kick out both legs and fall onto both forearms while turning head sideways, “Kihap.”

Key Points

• Beware of placing the arms and hands too low or too high, risking injury to the face.• Palms should ‘stick’ to the ground upon impact, not ‘bounce.’• Body weight should be equally distrbuted between upper and lower body.• Hands and feet should strike at the same time.• Keep your stomach tight thorughout, while keeping the hips above shoulder height.

Back Fall

Step 1: Extend both arms out horizontally, “HANA.”Step 2: Squat down and cross both arms, “DUL.”Step 3: Roll back, strike the floor with both arms, and lift both legs up straight, “Kihap.”

Key Points

• Keep chin tucked throughout the fall.• Strike the ground with arms at both sides at a 45 degree angle.• Lift hips slightly off the floor.

• Arms and legs should strike the floor at the same time.• Maintain nearly a 90 degree angle between your knee and your upright knee.• Crouch your body slightly while keeping your head up off the floor.

Key Points

• Touch the floor with the fingertips and arms while rolling, not with the palms.• Straighten your legs and push off with the back leg when rolling.• In order, feel your hand, forearm, shoulder, back and hip touching the floor when rolling.

Self DefenseAgainst Basic Grabs

Attacker: Grab defender’s right wrist with your right hand.

Defender: Step forward with your left foot. Right hand circles under in a clockwise motion. Left hand grabs the thumb side while the right hand grabs the pinky side of the attacker’s hand. Perform a wrist lock and apply pressure upward while stepping forward. Twist and kihap.

Attacker: Grab defender’s right wrist with your right hand.

Defender: Twist your right hand out palm facing up. At the same time, step in with left foot while your left hand reaches over attacker’s arm. Grab attacker’s hand with your left hand. Grab attacker’s fingers with your right hand. Pull down while stepping back, kihap.

Defender: Head circles under attacker’s right hand. Both hands grab attacker’s arm on the elbow. Step out with your left leg into horse riding stance. Gently apply pressure downward and kihap.

Attacker: Both hands grab defender’s shoulders.3

Defender: Right hand hooks under attacker’s right arm above the elbow. Bend elbow downward, push attacker’s arm the to the right with support from your left hand and step out with your right foot. At the same time, push with your left hand, pull with your right hand and step with your right foot. As the attacker turns, reach your left hand behind the attacker’s right shoulder. Step back with your left foot and pull the attacker down while dropping to your left knee. Stand up and perform a knifehand strike to the attacker’s rib, kihap.

Attacker: Both hands grab defender’s shoulders.4

Martial Arts Perspective

Black Belt instructors have the very challenging and rewarding responsibility of communicating to a range of ages and abilities every day. As a result, they always keep two well known speakers' rules in their mind. First, know your subject. To be called an expert in the martial arts, one must truly know each technique and requirement in detail. You must be able to break it down into smaller parts and explain it step by step.

The second speakers' rule is to know your audience. In order to successfully communicate, it is necessary to vary one's speed, word choice and use of touch or demonstrations to help students to understand both what and how to do each movement.

Regardless of whom they are talking to, one element always exists; an enthusiasm for the topic and a sincere desire to help the student succeed. All good instructors realize that they cannot measure their results by what they said, but rather by what their students learned. As a result, if they need to repeat, review, or revise their explanations, they do so until they have helped the student to succeed.

Life Skill Perspective

Communication, like respect, is a two way street. One cannot be said to communicate if they spoke but the other party wasn't listening or misunderstood the speaker's message. Communication is successful only when both sides have a greater clarity and appreciation of the other side's viewpoint, after the conversation has occurred. Be sure to include listening and observing, as well as talking and demonstration, in your strategies for communicating.

Also, never forget that a lot of sharing ideas and understanding is about transferring enthusiasm. Whether in a business meeting or a friendly discussion, don't be afraid to let your enthusiasm show. It makes you a better presenter and will be appreciated by your audience.

Self DefenseAgainst Various Grabs from the Front

Attacker: Grab defender’s right wrist with your right hand.

Defender: Place left hand over attacker’s right hand and step forward with right foot as right hand circles clockwise. Grabs attacker’s wrist, perform wrist lock and kihap.

Martial Arts Perspective

In some areas, a beginning martial arts student makes rapid and large scale progress. Within their first few months, they have learned techniques they had previously never even seen before, probably improved a bit in their fitness, and even seen a noticeable difference in their flexibility and balance.

As an advanced student, however, you have already developed a substantial base of skill and knowledge. As a result, the improvements that you see in your techniques and in yourself will be longer in coming and smaller in degree. A beginner may measure their progress by the number of moves they know or how many tips of belts they have achieved. By comparison, a Black Belt should measure progress based on more refined details such as the power and accurary of their board breaking techniques, their skill at responding to their opponent in sparring, or the balance and fluidity they can demonstrate in their form.

True experts or masters in the martial arts are continually improving each of their techniques down to the smallest detail. Someone might think that to become an expert you must do the same thing over and over. In reality, to an advanced student each repitition is a new opportunity. With each kick or punch, they use self awareness and sensitivity. They keep tinkering and adjusting, confident that over time they will develop a better way. This open minded attitude combined with practice and patience paves the way to continued advancement.

Life Skill Perspective

Patience doesn't have to be associated with doing nothing or just sitting around and waiting for something to happen. Instead, it can be thought of as applying self discipline and taking the long term view.

Always remember that time is a necessary ingredient in most meaningful development whether it be learning to play a musical instrument, losing and maintaining a healthy weight, or a young child learning to read. Of course, diligent and consistent effort can speed up the process, but no matter what, certain stages of development cannot be skipped.

In fact, most experts at any skill are likely to point out that their impressive abilities didn't occur overnight, but were in fact the result of a concentrated effort and focus over a long period of time. Many times someone whom the general public thnks of as an "overnight success" has actually been honing their skills for years before they ever reached the spotlight.

When it comes to the expectations you have for yourself or others, be willing to apply patience and understanding. Some of the most rewarding accomplishments are the ones that required the longest time to achieve.

Self DefenseAgainst Various Grabs from Behind

Defender: Right foot step back and duck under as your left hand grabs and slightly pulls the top of your partner’s right hand. Step back with your left foot, while you grab with your left hand and both hands twist your partner’s wrist throwing them to the ground, kihap.

Attacker: Both hands grab defender’s shoulders.1

Defender: Using both hands, grab partner’s wrist and lock your elbows in. Twist until their pinky finger is on top, left foot step out into horse riding stance. Twist wrist and apply pressure upward and kihap.

Attacker: Both hands grab under your partner’s arm (bear hug the mid section).2

Attacker: Bear hug over your partner’s arms.

Defender: Step behind your partner with your right foot. With both arms grab behind your partner’s knees. Pull up with your arms and push back with your shoulder bringing the attacker down. Finish by elbowing to the solar plexus, kihap.

Attacker: Place defender in a standing choke hold with right arm.

Defender: Turn your head to the left and with both hands grab your partner’s arm and pull down. Step behind your partner with your left foot. Bring your head out of the hold. Your left hand goes under your partner’s wrist and over the shoulder while you grab their elbow with your right hand. Step back with your right leg, apply pressure to the shoulder and take your partner down. Finish by applying pressure to shoulder and kihap.

Attacker: Place defender in a bent choke hold with right arm.

Defender: Left hand reach around and grab your partner’s left shoulder, while your right hand grabs their right ankle. Pull down with your left as you lift up with your right to bring your partner down. Choke your partner with your left forearm in order to escape the hold. Then step over with your left foot and grab their right arm with both hands. Sit down, making sure attacker’s thumb is on top. To finish, lean back pull down with both hands applying pressure to the elbow and kihap.

Martial Arts Perspective

The martial arts are sometimes referred to as action philosophy. To participate, students need to actively move their body. Martial arts can't be mastered by reading a book, watching some videos, or viewing classes. You must do it to learn it.

Students must also take the action of meeting new students. It is through training with others that the greatest gains are made. Practicing with a partner allows one to learn the applications of sparring and self defense, as well as the importance of cooperation and self control.

Much of the progress that occurs is the result of trial and error. Even with a highly skilled instructor, most students cannot perform any technique perfectly on the first try. Therefore, they must be willing to act and fail in the short term if they wish to succeed in the long term.

As a Black Belt, you have already taken a great deal of action. From getting started all the way through preparing for your Black Belt test. You have overcome hesitancy, shyness, fear, and facing the unknown. You have built your skills and abilities on a habit of taking action and it has served you well.

Life Skill Perspective

Taking action and being willing to risk failure is a vital element in learning and succeeding. One of the most helpful attitudes you can take when starting something new is "I don't have to be perfect to be making progress." Even if you move forward only a little at a time, you are still advancing.

Use the self confidence and self esteem you have gained from Tae Kwon Do to be a person of action. Apply your leadership skills at school, social organizations, or in the workplace. Also, rememeber the importance of follow through. Many people say they want to be a leader, just as many may say they want to be a Black Belt. The difference when it comes to getting results is the willingness to take consistent, focused action towards a worthwhile goal.

Defender: Turn your right hand so the palm faces up and grab your partner’s wrist. Twist their wrist and push their elbow with your left hand, while stepping diagonally across with your left foot. Martial Arts Perspective

Tae Kwon Do training has given you plenty of opportunities to develop your courage. Sparring against an opponent in class or in competition, staring down and then attempting to break a stack of boards, and even performing abelt test in front of a large audience are all examples of times where you had to overcome self doubt or even fear.

It it likely that after each of these experiences that your self confidence grew and that you felt less anxious about facing the same situations in the future. Gradually you increased your level of courage to the point where you may have still been nervous, but you were no longer fearful of taking action and you were able to focus on bringing out your best.

Life Skill Perspective

The famous saying states that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself. When you are following your beliefs, when you are speaking out about something important to you, be bold and determined.

When it comes to any big challenge it is not unusual to be nervous. However, we should not allow that nervousness to keep us from acting.

The best way to build courage is through preparation. When you know taht you are knowledgeable, well prepared and have thought out each step of the process, then you should be confident in taking action. True, not everything will always go perfectly, nor will you even win every time. However, courage isn't always about having all the skills necessary to win. Sometimes courage is built on being willing to try.

Martial Arts Perspective

One of the examples instructors are taught when they learn how to instruct is that teaching and developing a student is not unlike carving a statue. One starts with unshaped raw material and then slowly chips away. At first, the shape created is rather rough and lacking in detail. Then, as the carving continues, it becomes more refined and clear. Gradually, the work of both the instructor and the sculptor creates an impressive work. In fact, the great artist Michelangelo said that he first would get a clear vision of the statue he wanted to create, then he took away, through carving, what was not the statue until the statue had, in his words, revealed itself.

The difference, of course, between the statue and the student is that the student, unlike a block of marble, is an active particpant in the process. As an advanced student, you should use visualization and meditation, along with active practice to assist in the process of carving your techniques. Begin by getting a picture of the angle, the height, and the shape of the technique as you have seen it performed. Lock in on it and create a clear mental picture. Then, with each practice try to move closer to that vision. You are sure to find the process stimulating and challenging.

Life Skill Perspective

Even the most impressive structure or the most technical machine, began first as an idea. Slowly that idea was turned into a vision and then a series of procedures to make it a reality. Clearly, all great accomplishments begin as a thought before they take physical shape. It also seems to be true that the greater clarity one has when creating a vision, the closer they are to making that vision a reality.

Ask yourself in your personal and professional life where you would benefit by getting a clearer vision of what you want to achieve. Whether it is an ideal family vacation, a more organized workplace, or better time management, gathering your thoughts and getting a clear mental picture will bring you closer to making results happen.

Attacker: Step and swipe in a diaganol motion twice, then lunge and poke to the stomach with kihap.

Defender: Slide back to avoid the initial two attacks and block the poke by grabbing the attacker’s wrist with both hands in a downward motion. Step across and through leading with your right leg and re-direct the knife to the attacker’s stomach. Step back and spin into the original position with the attacker’s arm ending up straight in front of your body. Bring your left arm over your partner’s arm, apply pressure to attacker’s shoulder with left side of your body while stepping back and around with your right leg. Your partner should spiral downward, face down to the floor, kihap. Take the knife out of the attacker’s hand and roll away.
