    Type of AWWA / ANSI / ASME Flanges

    AWWA Steel-ring Flanges (same type to ASME slip-on flanges) The steel-ring flange has a none hub because the pipe slips into the flange prior to welding. It is welded both inside and out to provide sufficient strength and prevent leakage.

    Welding Neck (W.N) FlangesThe welding neck flange is normally referred toas the “high hub” flange. It is designed totransfer stresses to the pipe, there by reducinghigh stress concentrations at the base of theflange. The welding neck flange is the bestdesigned butt-welded flange of those currentlyavailable because of it is inherent structuralvalue. It is expansive because of the designed.

    Slip-On (S.O) Flanges (same type to AWWA Steel-hub Flanges)The slip-on flange has a low hub because the pipe slips into the flange prior to welding. It iswelded both inside and out to provide sufficient strength and prevent leakage. Slip-on flangesare all bored slightly larger than the O.D of the matching pipe. They are preferred over weldingneck flanges by many users due to their lower initial cost, but final installation cost is probablynot much less than that of the welding neck flange because of the additional welding involved.

    Blind (BL.) FlangesThe blind flange is a flange without a bore. It is used to close off the ends of a piping systemand/or a pressure vessel opening. It also permits easy access to the interior of a line or vessel onceit Has been sealed and must be reopened.

    Socket Welding (S.W) FlangesThe socket welding flange is similar to a slip-on flange except it has a bore and a counter boredimension. The counter bore is slightly larger than the O.D of the matching pipe, allowing thepipe to be inserted into the flange similar to a slip-on flange. The diameter of the smaller bore isthe same as the I.D of the matching pipe.A restriction is built into the bottom of the bore whichsets as a shoulder for the pipe to rest on. This eliminates any restriction in flow when using asocket welding flange.

    Lap Joint (L. J) Flanges The lap joint flange is practically identical to a slip-on flange except it has a radius at theintersection of the bore and flange face. This radius is necessary to have the flangeaccommodate a lap joint stud end. Normally, a lap joint flange and a lap joint stub end aremated together in an assembly system.

    Threaded (T.R) FlangesThe threaded flange is similar to the slip-on flange, but the bore is Threaded. Its chief merit is that it can be assembled without welding, explaining its use in low pressureservices at ordinary atmospheric temperatures, and in highly explosive areas where weldingcreate a hazard.
