FEATURE  HIGHLIGHTS  

OVERVIEW 

The MassTransit 5.1 FTP Fallback Feature provides an additional method of working with files remotely hosted on a MassTransit Server. This feature works to effectively improve the overall usability of the product in the event an end user cannot install or upgrade the MassTransit Web Client Plug‐in, or, if using the web client is not possible or restricted due to environmental concerns, such as accessing behind a proxy or on a slower connection. Using industry‐standard FTP (file transfer protocol) to facilitate communication, the FTP Fallback Feature allows users quick and easy access to files in a straightforward and easy‐to‐use way. 

LIMITATIONS  &  CAVEATS  

The MassTransit 5.1 FTP Fallback Feature uses the FTP protocol for communication and has several limitations and caveats. By using FTP, you will not be using key features of the MassTransit Web Client, including: 

Drag & drop file transfer from the web browser  Protection of folder structures and Macintosh specific file information such as resource forks, Finder icons, special 

characters, and file modification times  Encryption of both user passwords and file content  Built‐in lossless compression for faster transfers  Guaranteed delivery of uncorrupted files using checksums and handshakes 

SETUP  &  CONFIGURATION 

The MassTransit 5.1 FTP Fallback Feature is enabled by default for all new Web and Application Client Contacts created within the MassTransit Administrator application. A new option on the Security tab, entitled FTP Privileges, determines whether the Client Contact has permission to connect via FTP. 

 

Once configured, the client can use the FTP Fallback options presented in the MTWeb interface, or, any standard FTP client to connect to the system to transfer files.

FTP  FALLBACK  USAGE 

NO  PLUG‐IN  OR  OUTDATED  PLUG‐IN 

When connecting to the MassTransit MTWeb user interface, the MassTransit Engine queries the user’s computer to determine if the MassTransit Web Client Plug‐in is installed, and, if installed, the presently installed version. If the user has no plug‐in installed, or, if the plug‐in is older than the version requested by MTWeb, they are prompted to install or upgrade. If the user proceeds with the installation and has FTP Privileges enabled, a new option will be presented to them in the MassTransit MTWeb user interface beneath the plug‐in download instructions, entitled “Use FTP Instead.” Clicking the “Use FTP” button will spawn a new FTP session, which will be handled by the web browser. Each browser has unique handling characteristics for FTP servers, and these are covered later in this document. 

 

CURRENT  PLUG‐IN 

If the user has a current plug‐in installed they will not be prompted to upgrade. However, there may be times in which using FTP may prove more reliable, for example when connecting from a slower connection, such as dial‐up. To accommodate these circumstances, a new link has been added beneath the plug‐in within the MTWeb user interface. 

Clicking the “Click here to transfer files using FTP” link will spawn an FTP session, which will be handled by the web browser. Each browser has unique handling characteristics, and these are covered later in this document.

BROWSER  SUPPORT  FOR  MICROSOFT  WINDOWS 

INTERNET  EXPLORER  6 

The  MassTransit FTP Fallback Feature works with Internet Explorer 6. The link presented contains the username of the currently logged in user, and, when clicked, hands the URL off to Windows Explorer. Explorer will prompt the user to enter a valid username and password. Anonymous login is not supported by MassTransit, and will result in login failure. 

 

The resulting display shows the user’s mailbox and corresponding folder hierarchy inside Windows Explorer. 

 

Windows Explorer supports file uploads. If a user prefers, however, they can access the URL in a standard FTP client for additional functionality beyond basic upload and download operations. Several popular FTP clients have been tested with Microsoft Windows and these can be found later in this document. 

INTERNET  EXPLORER  7 

The  MassTransit FTP Fallback Feature works with Internet Explorer 7, however, due to new changes introduced in this version, behaves differently than Internet Explorer 6. 

When accessing an FTP link via IE7, the link is presented to the end user as the IP address or system hostname and port. The MTWeb interface automatically inserts the username of the currently logged in user into the FTP link, however, IE7 removes this from the browser status bar and does not pass this argument when the link is clicked. Example: MTWeb presents ftp://joewebclient@10.10.20.10:2121 to the browser; however, it is ultimately interpreted as ftp://10.10.20.10:2121, despite the proper path being visible in the source of the page. 

Once clicked, IE7 will prompt the user to enter a valid username and password. Anonymous login is not supported by MassTransit, and will result in login failure.

After authenticating, the browser will display the user’s folder hierarchy, and the user can then browse the contents and download files accordingly. 

 

IE7 handles FTP links differently than IE6. In IE6, FTP links were automatically handed off to Windows Explorer. In IE7, they are handled by the browser and a user has to specifically “request” that the FTP link be opened by Explorer. 

In IE7, by default, an option entitled “Enable FTP folder view (outside of Internet Explorer)” is turned on. (This can be adjusted inside Internet Options ‐> Advanced.) When enabled, the user can select the Page menu, and then click “Open FTP Site in Windows Explorer.” Unfortunately, the cached login credentials are NOT passed to Windows Explorer. A generic “login failed” error message is displayed, as Windows Explorer is attempting to anonymously connect to the MassTransit FTP Service. 

 

To connect and log in to the FTP Server, the user has two options. 

1. Enter the username and password into the FTP URL in the Explorer address bar. For example: ftp://joewebclient: password@10.10.20.10:2121/  

2. Click on the File menu, and then choose Login As… 

PLEASE NOTE: On Windows Vista, the menu bar is hidden by default for all Explorer views, and therefore, no File menu is visible. To view the menu bar, a user must click on Organize, then choose Layout, then click Menu Bar. There is NO Login As… option presented to the user in Windows Vista without the Menu Bar being displayed.)

FIREFOX  1.5  &  2.0 

The  MassTransit FTP Fallback Feature works with Firefox versions 1.5 and 2.0. The link presented contains the username of the currently logged in user, and, when clicked, prompts the user to enter his or her password.

BROWSER  SUPPORT  FOR  MAC OS  X 

SAFARI  2.0  &  3.0  BETA 

The  MassTransit FTP Fallback Feature works with Safari 2.0 and 3.0 Beta. The link presented contains the username of the currently logged in user, and, when clicked, hands off the requested URL to the Finder. Finder then prompts the user to authenticate, as seen in the figure below. 

 

The resulting display shows the user’s mailbox and corresponding folder hierarchy. 

Users authenticating against Directory Services (Active Directory) will need to re‐enter their username into the Name field shown above. This is due to the way in which Safari handles login names with non‐standard characters. For example, if the username is DOMAIN\JOHN, Safari may improperly display this as DOMAIN%5CJOHN when attempting to connect using FTP Fallback. Simply retype DOMAIN\JOHN into the Name field, supply the password, and then proceed. 

The Mac OS X Finder is limited to read‐only access of the user’s directory hierarchy. File uploads can be accomplished by accessing the URL using a standard FTP client. Several popular FTP clients have been tested with Mac OS X and these can be found later in this document. 

 

FIREFOX  1.5  &  2.0 

The  MassTransit FTP Fallback Feature works correctly with Firefox versions 1.5 and 2.0. The link presented contains the username of the currently logged in user, and, when clicked, prompts the user to enter his or her password.

FTP  CLIENT  SUPPORT  FOR  MICROSOFT  WINDOWS  

IPSWITCH  WS_FTP  PROFESSIONAL  2007 

The  MassTransit FTP Fallback Feature has been demonstrated to work with Ipswitch WS_FTP Professional 2007. 

 

Users can manually enter a MassTransit FTP Server address into the toolbar (with the corresponding port number, if applicable) or they can use the application’s Site Manager to predefine any number of MassTransit (or other FTP) servers. 

The Site Options are straightforward. Users should pay attention to the hostname (or IP address), and, on the Advanced tab, the port number used to connect to MassTransit. Once the site has been added to the Site Manager, a user can connect to it by simply double‐clicking, or, by clicking the Connect button.

GLOBALSCAPE  CUTEFTP  PROFESSIONAL  8.0 

The  MassTransit FTP Fallback Feature has been demonstrated to work with GlobalSCAPE CuteFTP Professional 8.0. 

 

Users can manually enter a MassTransit FTP Server address into the toolbar (with the corresponding port number, if applicable) or they can use the application’s Site Manager to predefine any number of MassTransit (or other FTP) servers. 

The Site Properties are straightforward. Users should pay attention to the host address (or IP address), and, on the Type tab, the port number used to connect to MassTransit. Once the site has been added to the Site Manager, a user can connect to it by simply double‐clicking, or, by clicking the Connect button.

PANIC  TRANSMIT  3.5 

The  MassTransit FTP Fallback Feature has been demonstrated to work with Panic Transmit 3.5 on Mac OS X. 

 

Users can manually enter a MassTransit FTP Server address into the Connect tab or they can use the application’s Favorites tab to predefine any number of MassTransit (or other FTP) servers.

The  MassTransit FTP Fallback Feature has been demonstrated to work with Fetch Softworks Fetch 5.2 on Mac OS X. 

 

Users can manually enter a MassTransit FTP Server address into the Connect sheet on launch or they can use the application’s Shortcuts feature to predefine any number of MassTransit (or other FTP) servers. 

 

The Shortcuts feature is straightforward. Users should pay attention to the host address (or IP address) and the port number used to connect to MassTransit. Once the site has been added to Favorites, a user can connect to it by simply double‐clicking.
