Welcome to our Faithful Parishioners and All Those who may be ‘Just Visiting’
Jesus washed the feet of his apostles at the Last Supper as a sign of loving service, instructing them “as I have done this to you so must you do for one another.” We as a family of faith strive to live this commandment of love in doing all that we can to welcome you as we invite you to be an active member of this community. Welcome new parishioners! If you are new to our parish, I invite you to introduce yourself to me or any of the other priests after Sunday Mass, or when you come into the rectory to register. Even though we are a large parish, we make every effort to come to know you and your family personally so that we may be better able to serve you. So please be sure to say hello! -Fr. Ken

Fr. Ken’s Corner
Dear Brothers and Sisters of Saint Rose of Lima Parish, Over the years, I think we have all come to realize that we’re losing a significant portion of the treasury of Catholic Culture. So, if we believe this is true, what do we do to try to retain as much of it as possible? Is there a ‘disconnect’ from classroom learning and the experience of our Catholic Heritage? I think that for children and adults alike, there are certain basic understandings of our faith which should be reviewed every once in a while, or else we tend to forget that there are many important pieces that help to form the whole picture of our Catholic Identity. And so, in imitation of that program from a few years back, Do You Know More Than a Fifth Grader, I offer the following questions. After you’ve looked at them, see how many your children or grandchildren know - and if you happen to need help, the answers are also below. 1. We’ve left behind the Advent and Christmas Season a short time ago. Can you name the FOUR primary figures of Advent? 2. What does the title Emmanuel mean? 3. The Sunday AFTER Christmas honors whom? 4. What is the CHURCH FEAST we celebrate on January 1? 5. What proper or Liturgical Name do we give to the Feast of the Three Kings? 6. Everybody knows the prayer “Hail Mary.” It is partly based on two scenes from St. Luke’s gospel and the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary. Can you name those two scenes? 7. Can you or your children or your grandchildren name the five Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary? 8. Saint John Paul II instituted new Mysteries of the Rosary. Do you know what they are called? 9. What is the “Great Commandment”? 10. Do you know what the “Golden Rule” is? 11. We’ve all heard about the Sermon on the Mount – when Jesus gives us the Beatitudes. Of the eight Beatitudes, how many come to mind? 12. What is the Great Feast which closes the Easter Season? 13. Can you name the six Holy Days of Obligation in the United States? Answers: (1) Isaiah, John the Baptist, Blessed Mother, St. Joseph (2) God is with us (3) The Holy Family (4) Mary, Mother of God (5) Epiphany (6) The Annunciation and the Visitation (7) The Resurrection, The Ascension, The Descent of the Holy Spirit, The Assumption, The Crowning of Mary, Queen of Heaven (8) The Luminous Mysteries (9) Love God with all your whole strength; love your neighbor as yourself (10) Do unto others as you would have them do onto you (11) Blessed are the poor in spirit, theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven (cf. Matt:5) (12) Pentecost (13) January 1, Mary, Mother of God; 40 days after Easter; Ascension Thursday; August 15, Assumption of Mary into Heaven; November 1, Feast of All Souls; December 8, Immaculate Conception of Mary; December 25, The Nativity of Jesus (Christmas) I didn’t have room to list any questions about the sacraments, the Lent/Easter Season, the Creed, or some of
the many observations and celebrations as a part of our life in the church. Yet, we need to remember that knowledge of our faith (book learning) and the lived experience of our faith (personal prayer, public worship, and service) go hand in hand – one gives life and meaning to the other.

Spiritual God-Parent Program
In 1973, a Supreme Court decision was rendered legalizing abortion throughout the entire nine months of pregnancy. This decision, Roe v. Wade, is the reason why an estimated 60 million babies have lost their lives since then. This enormous number of deaths can be overwhelming for us. Each of us wonders what one person can do to end this horrible tragedy in our nation. WE CAN PRAY! This weekend, we at St. Rose will begin our 20th Annual Spiritual God-Parent Program. Not all of us are called to participate in marches or pro-life vigils, but all of us can make a commitment to a one-minute prayer each day for nine months for the intention of saving a baby who is in jeopardy of being aborted. This is an opportunity to involve your children. Teach them how precious life is, and sponsor one baby as a family. Pledge cards will be available for you to sign, committing yourself and your family to pray for one unborn baby for the next nine months. Accompanying this year’s pledge cards is a special gift intended to symbolize the beauty and sanctity of human life at all stages of development. We will update your baby’s development each month in the bulletin and will conclude in October with a Baby Shower in which all gifts will be donated to Birthright. Your prayers will help a woman contemplating abortion to choose LIFE over death. Please share the gift of LIFE given to us by our Heavenly Father and join us in this commitment.
