9. Glenn Foundation for Medical Research and AFAR Grants for Junior Faculty, American

Federation for Aging Research (AFAR)

The major goal of this program is to assist in the development of the careers of junior

investigators committed to pursuing careers in the field of aging research. GMRF and AFAR

support research projects concerned with understanding the basic mechanisms of aging rather

than disease-specific research. Projects investigating age-related diseases are supported if

approached from the point of view of how basic aging processes may lead to these outcomes.

Projects concerning mechanisms underlying common geriatric functional disorders are also

encouraged, as long as these include connections to fundamental problems in the biology of

aging. Projects that deal strictly with clinical problems such as the diagnosis and treatment of

disease, health outcomes, or the social context of aging are not eligible.

Examples of potentially fundable areas of research include, but are not limited to:

• Aging and immune function

• Stem cell aging

• Inflammation

• Genetic control of longevity

• Neurobiology and neuropathology of aging

• Invertebrate or vertebrate animal models

• Cardiovascular aging

• Aging and cellular stress response

• Metabolic and endocrine changes

Eligibility requirements (partial list):

• The applicant must be an independent investigator with independent research space as

described in a form completed by the Dean or Department Chair, and must be no more

than 10 years beyond start of postdoctoral research training as of July 1, 2020.

11. Research Scientist Award in Neuroradiology, American Society of Neuroradiology

(ASNR)/The Foundation of the ASNR

The Research Scientist Award in Neuroradiology was created to provide research opportunities

for PhD, MD and MD - PhD investigators to advance the science of neuroradiology. Scientific

research is the foundation upon which the clinical practice of neuroradiology is built. Research

scientists in partnership with radiologists have traditionally led the development of new

imaging technologies and image - guided procedures. The directive of this award is to assist

young scientists in their transition to becoming independent investigators in neuroradiology

research as well as to help established investigators initiate new projects with relevance to

neuroradiology. Although any research area in neuroradiology will be considered, the award

emphasizes the development of diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology, basic science,

and translational research.

Eligibility requirements (partial list):

• A candidate must be a member of ASNR in good standing with a PhD degree, or

equivalent doctoral degree, in biomedical science, engineering, computer science,

physics or allied fields in science and engineering.

• Postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty are encouraged to participate.

• Physicians with MD or MD-PhD equivalent medical degrees who have exceptional

training in research and a demonstrated track record of peer-reviewed original research

publications are also invited to apply. Physicians who are in clinical practice, more than

25% during the award period are not eligible, as this award is dedicated to the support

of full-time research scientists.

• While under the auspices of the Foundation Research Award, the candidate must be

(ASNR)/The Foundation of the ASNR

The Scholar Award in Neuroradiology Research was created to provide funding opportunities

for investigators not yet professionally established in neuroimaging research, and to obtain

experience and competency in newly developing fields within neuroradiology. Scientific

research is the foundation upon which the clinical practice of neuroradiology is built.

Neuroradiologists must be leaders in the development of new imaging technologies and image

- guided procedures, as well as in assessment of the roles of these technologies and procedures

in the care of patients. The directive of this award is to train individuals in neuroscience

research in important areas. Although any research area in neuroradiology will be considered,

the awards emphasize the application of techniques in basic science research to diagnostic

and/or interventional neuroradiology.

Eligibility requirements (partial list):

13. Young Investigator Award (YIA), Children's Tumor Foundation (CTF)

The Young Investigator Award (YIA), CTF's longest running award program, provides funding

for two years to early-career NF researchers, helping them to get established as independent

investigators. The main function of the YIA program is to serve as a 'seeding mechanism' for

researchers to secure larger grants, such as from the NIH and CDMRP NFRP. Several former

YIAs are now leaders in the NF research and clinical communities. In fact, CTF's `seeding' of the

NF field with new talent has been hailed as a key reason for rapid advancements in NF research

in recent years.

Program Focus:

The YIA mechanism supports basic and translational research towards -

• Understanding cellular, genetic, and molecular mechanisms underlying the

pathogenesis of neurofibromatoses (NF)

• Identifying novel therapeutic targets

• Testing novel therapeutic targets

• Testing candidate therapeutics

• Analysis of natural history of NF

Eligibility requirements (partial list):

• Applicant must be one of the following -

o A postdoctoral fellow (MD, Ph.D., or equivalent) with no more than 7 years past

completion of their first doctoral degree OR

o A graduate student pursuing their MD, Ph.D., or equivalent

• Note: Applications from individuals holding a faculty position will NOT be accepted.

• Applicant must be affiliated with the laboratory of a senior researcher who is the

applicant's research sponsor. The sponsor must offer a training environment that is

conducive for the growth and education of an early-career NF researcher. As part of the

application, the mentor will be asked to describe the intended training plan.

14. Clinical Trials in Thalassemia Cell and Gene Therapy Grant Award, Cooley's Anemia

Foundation

The Cooley's Anemia Foundation invites national and international applicants to apply for

grants to facilitate clinical trials in Cell and Gene Therapy to advance a cure for thalassemia.

Both phase I (safety) and phase II (efficacy) trials are eligible for support.

Studies proposed for this RFA must be accompanied by a realistic timeline of progress to

human trials. The Foundation recognizes that this timeline can be long. While the funds may be

used toward any aspect of launching a human gene therapy trial, the Foundation will request

careful documentation of other support of the investigator(s) and the project, and a thorough

justification of the allocation of costs to various support mechanisms. This will best enable

reviewers to assess feasibility of the proposed project. Examples of expenses allowed will

include:

• Clinical-grade vector production and quality control

• Research subject assessments

• Late-preclinical studies and ex vivo studies on research subjects required for safety and

efficacy assessments (including, but not limited to, evaluation of vector genome

integration events, studies of transduction efficiency, studies of globin production by

transduced hematopoietic stem cells from subjects)

• Patient care costs directly related to the study

• Research assistant or research nursing support.

related to thalassemia. The areas of interest include, but are not limited to, studies of globin

gene regulation, globin gene transfer and expression, fetal hemoglobin production,

hematopoietic stem cell research, bone marrow transplantation, iron chelation and iron

overload, endocrine and cardiac disorders in thalassemia, and transfusion therapy and its

complications.

Fellowships are awarded to the medical institutions where the research is to be undertaken;

thus, each application must be approved by and administered through the appropriate

administrative representative at the institution. Assurance must be given that adequate

investigations involving human subjects, that the project has been reviewed and approved by

the appropriate committee or governing body on human research. The research may not be

conducted at a for-profit laboratory.

Eligibility requirements (partial list):

• Postdoctoral applicants must have adequate preceptorship and guidance by an

experienced investigator. The sponsor of a postdoctoral fellow should be an investigator

with adequate experience and at an institution with adequate research facilities. The

application is expected to be the original work of the candidate but should reflect the

close advice of the interested and involved sponsor. Postdoctoral applicants must have

an MD, PhD, or equivalent degree, and cannot hold a faculty position.
