Mass Wasting and Landform Development• Mass wasting refers to the downslope
movement of rock, regolith, and soil under the direct influence of gravity.
• Role of mass wasting• Geologic process that often follows weathering• Combined effects if mass wasting and running
water produce stream valleys

• Slopes change through time.• No minimum angle is required for mass wasting to
occur.• Most rapid and spectacular mass-wasting events
occur in areas of rugged, geologically young mountains.• Mass wasting and erosional processes slowly
lower the land surface.

Controls and Triggers of Mass Wasting• Important factors include:
• The role of water–Diminishes particle cohesion (friction)–Water adds weight.
• Oversteepening of slopes—slope angle–Stable slope angle (angle of repose) is different
for various materials.–Oversteepened slopes are unstable.

• Important factors• Removal of anchoring vegetation• Earthquakes as triggers–May cause expensive property damage–Can cause liquefaction—Water-saturated
surface materials behave as fluid-like masses that flow.

Classification of Mass Wasting Processes• Generally, each event is classified by:
• Type of material involved–Mud –Earth–Rock
• Type of motion–Fall (free-falling pieces)–Slide (material moves along a surface as a coherent
mass)

Types of Mass Wasting• Slump
• Movement of a mass of rock or unconsolidated material as a unit along a curved surface• Occurs along oversteepened slopes

• Rockslide• Blocks of bedrock slide down a slope.• Generally very fast and destructive
• Debris flow (mudflow)• Consists of soil and regolith with a large amount of
water• Often confined to channels

Gros Ventre Rockslide, WyomingThe landslide occurred on June 23, 1925, following the melt from a heavy snowpack and several weeks of heavy rain. Approximately 50,000,000 cu yd (38,000,000 m3) of primarily sedimentary rock slid down the north face of Sheep Mountain, crossed over the Gros Ventre River and raced up the opposing mountainside a distance of 300 feet (91 m). The landslide created a huge dam over 200 feet (61 m) high and 400 yards (370 m) wide across the Gros Ventre River, backing up the water and forming Lower Slide Lake. On May 18, 1927, a portion of the landslide dam failed, and resulting in a massive flood that was 6 feet (1.8 m) deep for at least 25 miles (40 km) downstream. The small town of Kelly, six miles (10 km) downstream, was wiped out killing six people.

• Slow movements• Creep–Gradual movement of soil and regolith downhill–Aided by the alternate expansion and contraction of
the surface material

• Slow movements• Solifluction–Promoted by a dense clay hardpan or impermeable
bedrock layer–Common in regions underlain by permafrost–Can occur on gentle slopes

Submarine Landslides• Submarine landslides are common and
widespread in occurrence.• The most spectacular underwater landslides
occur on the flanks of submarine volcanoes (called seamounts).
