APRIL 14, 2019PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD
VOCATION VIEWSurrender your life to God. You are promised eternal life.
(Luke 22:14-23:1-49)
WHO DID NOT REGARD EQUALITY WITH GOD?“Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

FIX THE BRICKS NEWSAs of Monday, April 8, 2019:
REVENUE: Our total revenue has reached $107,247.15. Thank you!EXPENSE: Our total expense has reached $211,618.90.
Trisco Systems took advantage of some fine weather on March 27th and 28th to finish their work on our church, spraying the terra cotta and brick with a special sealant. We have forwarded them the final payment of $14,384.50, bringing our total and final expenses to $211,618.90. Thanks to everyone who has helped with this project. Donations towards Fix the Bricks will be accepted through the end of the fiscal year, June 30, 2019, and then we will close the books on this campaign.
GOOD FRIDAYThis year, we will initiate a change to our Good Friday schedule. There will still be an ecumenical service at noon, this year at Ada Chapel, 332 Grant Street, Wilmington, but we will not then carry the cross through town to St. Columbkille and conduct Stations of the Cross here. St. Columbkille will start taking a turn hosting the noon service in rotation with our Wilmington area neighbors. There are several reasons for this change:
• It will reduce a little of the redundancy that has filled Good Friday in the past.
• It will open the noon service to churches not within walking distance of St. Columbkille.
• It will (hopefully) encourage our own parishioners to attend the noon ecumenical service and/or the Catholic Good Friday service (Celebration of the Lord’s Passion) which will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. at Holy Name and again at 7:30 P.M. at St. Columbkille.
The Catholic Good Friday service, which includes reception of Holy Communion, is one of the most moving liturgies of the year and is an integral part of the Triduum of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday. I heartily encourage all to participate.
– Fr. Mike
PONTIFICAL GOOD FRIDAY COLLECTIONPope Francis has asked our parish to support the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, which helps Christians in the Holy Land. Your support helps the church minister in parishes, provide Catholic schools and offer religious education. The Pontifical Good Friday Collection also helps to preserve the sacred shrines. The wars, unrest and instability have been especially hard on Christians. In these times of crisis, the Pontifical Good Friday Collection provides humanitarian aid to refugees. When you contribute to the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, you become an instrument of peace and join with Catholics around the world in solidarity with the Church in the Holy Land. PLEASE BE GENEROUS! For more information about Christians in the Holy Land, visit www.myfranciscan.org/good-friday.

CHRISM MASSTuesday of Holy Week, April 16, 2019, 7:00-8:30 P.M.
St. Peter in Chains Cathedral 325 W. 8th Street, Cincinnati, OH The Chrism Mass manifests the unity of the priests with their Bishop. Here the Bishop blesses three oils – the oil of catechumens (oleum catechumenorum or oleum sanctorum), the oil of the infirm (oleum infirmorum) and holy chrism (sacrum chrisma) – which will be used in the administration of the sacraments throughout the diocese for the year. This tradition is rooted in the early Church as noted in the Gelasian Sacramentary (named after Pope Gelasius I, d. 496), but was later absorbed into the Holy Thursday evening Mass; Pope Pius XII issued a new Ordinal for Holy Week, which reinstituted a special Mass of the chrism distinct from the evening Mass.

WORD OF LIFEFor all whose lives are in jeopardy: May they come to know that God never abandons His children but remains always at their side. We pray to the Lord.
“When battered by life’s storms or immersed in a dense fog of suffering and uncertainty, we may feel alone and unequipped to handle the circumstances. Yet with words that echo through thousands of years into the corners of our hearts, the Lord says to us, ‘Do not fear: I am with you’ (Isaiah 41:10).”

FEASTS CELEBRATED THIS WEEKApril 14th – Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord
Gospel Reading Luke 22:14–23:56Background on the Gospel ReadingThroughout Luke’s Gospel we see that Jesus’ words and actions proclaim the Kingdom of God. This motif continues throughout Luke’s passion narrative. Jesus appears to be in total command of events at the Passover meal as He hands over the kingdom to his disciples. He welcomes them to the Passover meal announcing that this will be his last until the Kingdom of God is fulfilled. As throughout Luke’s Gospel, however, the disciples show little understanding of this kingdom that Jesus often announces. Following the meal, the disciples argue about who is the greatest. Jesus takes the opportunity to distinguish the meaning of leadership in the Kingdom of God from the forms of leadership seen in the world.Jesus initiates a conversation with Simon and predicts his denial. Jesus then instructs his disciples to prepare themselves for the events that will follow. His words reveal an awareness of the challenges that all of them will face in the days ahead. As the disciples and Jesus enter the Mount of Olives, Jesus indicates the importance of the disciples’ time in prayer, telling them that through prayer they will be able to face the challenges ahead. As he prays, Jesus is tested. In the garden, an angel is sent to strengthen and prepare him for the events ahead. After this moment, Jesus is again in charge of the events and circumstances. In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus is portrayed as active and vocal throughout his passion. When one of the disciples strikes the high priest’s servant, Jesus heals the man, an event reported only in the Gospel of Luke. Jesus stops the disciples’ protest against his arrest by noting that this is the “time for the power of darkness.” Jesus engages and responds when brought before the Sanhedrin; his words speak about the “power of God” that will bring about the reign of the Son of Man. When questioned by Pilate, Jesus responds with just one phrase; yet before Herod, Jesus refuses to speak. When Luke describes the Way of the Cross and Jesus’ crucifixion, he calls to our attention many events that are not reported in the other Gospels. Throughout his Gospel, Luke has paid heed to the women who accompanied Jesus. Now, on the road to Calvary, Jesus speaks to the women who walk with him. Only Luke reports Jesus’ words of forgiveness spoken from the cross. And only Luke reports the dialogue between Jesus and the good thief. Finally, in contrast with the Gospels of Mark and Matthew, Luke reports no words of abandonment spoken by Jesus on the cross. Instead, Jesus, in full command until his death, commends his spirit to his Father and takes his final breath.
April 18 – Holy ThursdayThis evening Lent ends and the Church enters the Sacred Paschal Triduum, gathering to pray, building toward the prolonged vigiling of Saturday night. This evening’s celebration, the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, is the threshold liturgy of the Triduum. It commemorates the institution of the Eucharist and the priesthood, as well as Jesus’s command of love and service.
April 19 – Good FridayOn this day, the parish community gathers to prayerfully recall the Death of Jesus “in hopes of their resurrection” (Prayer over the People, Good Friday). Because his Resurrection is inseparable from his Death, the Lord’s Passion is truly celebrated. We remember last night’s words from St. Paul, “We should glory in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, in whom is our salvation, life and resurrection, through whom we are saved and delivered.”
April 20 – Easter VigilIn the midst of darkness, the great Paschal candle is lit from the Easter fire, five wax nails of incense are imbedded, and it becomes the symbol of the crucified Christ. The Paschal Mystery, already celebrated in various ways since the Evening of the Lord’s Supper, is clearly and joyfully announced from the very beginning of the Vigil Liturgy. It is the light of the Paschal Candle that the Liturgy continues to unfold.

VOCATIONS AWARENESSIT IS REALLY GOD HIMSELF, the “LORD of the harvest”, who choose His laborers. His call is always undeserved and unexpected. We are called to cooperate with His providence, and to use the powerful tool which He has placed in our hands: prayer. Jesus said, “Pray the LORD of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” SERRA USA
FREE ATHENAEUM LAY COURSEFor the 2019-2020 academic year, the Athenaeum is offering each parish in the Archdiocese the opportunity to register one parishioner for a free course. The recipient may select a 1, 2 or 3 credit graduate course, depending on the recipient’s interest and academic background. The recipient must be a new student to the Athenaeum and must meet all academic requirements for the course selected. The free course may be taken in the 2019 Fall Semester, (August 21st-December 16th) or the 2020 Spring Semester, (January 6th-May 9th). For more information, please email Dr. Susan McGurgan, [email protected] or call 513-231-1200.
Please take a few minutes to look at the 2019 edition of the sponsor page of this bulletin. It is through the generosity of our area sponsors that we get our bulletin printed free of charge to the parish. We ask you, our parish family and guests, to consider these advertisers as a source of future business. Please mention you saw their ads on our bulletin! We would like to thank our local advertisers for their support and encourage everyone to shop local to support our local economy.
