Dear Parishioners, You are the salt of the earth … and the light of the world, Jesus says to his disciples. And salt that has no flavor is good for nothing, while a lighted lamp under a basket fails to dispel the darkness. No one here would deny there is too much darkness in the world. We also know how much we dread the dark days of winter and can’t wait for the days to start getting longer again. Illness and de-pression are often linked to the lack of light. We all relish in the “bright sunshiny day”. As faithful followers of Jesus, it is now our responsibility to disperse the darkness we encounter around us with the Light of Christ that dwells

within each of us. As congregations and communities, we have to hold our civic leaders accountable for decisions that bring darkness to the world instead of light. We also need to praise our civic leaders when they buck what may be popular and choose to do what is right. The prophet Isaiah says, Share your bread with the hungry, shel-ter the oppressed and the homeless; clothe the naked when you see them, and do not turn your back on your own. These are all concrete ways in which we flavor the earth with God’s goodness and allow light to break forth in darkness. But these are not the only ways. Jesus’ metaphors do not have to frighten the introverts among us – we are not required to be a giant pillar of salt, or a strobe light on an airfield. Each of us has the opportunity to glorify God ac-cording to our gifts, our circumstances and our state in life. So, even if all we can offer is a grain of salt, or a flicker of a match light, that is OK. Whatever we have been given by God is meant to be shared for the sake of the world. Whatever we have is worth giving. May the Lord grant, as Saint Paul says, that our faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God, that we may be salt for the earth and light for the world.

Fr. Tad

“Faith Formation is more than a subject to be taught, it is an invitation to a way of life” Joe

Paprocki. Pope Francis about the Eucharist – General Audience Wednesday, November 8, 2017 The Eucharist is a wondrous event in which Jesus Christ, our life, makes himself present. Participating in the Mass “is truly living again the redemptive passion and death of Our Lord. It is a visible manifestation: The Lord makes himself present on the altar to be offered to the Father for the salva-tion of the world” (Homily at the Domus Sanctae Marthae, February 10, 2014). The Lord is there with us, present. So often do we go there, look at things, talk amongst ourselves while the priest is celebrating the Eucharist … and we do not celebrate close to Him. But it is the Lord! If today comes a very important world personage, it is certain that we would all be close to him, that we would want to greet him. But think: when you go to Mass, the Lord is there! And you get distracted. It is the Lord! We have to think about this. “Father, it’s that the Masses are dull” — “But what are you saying, that the Lord is dull?” — “No, no. Not the Mass, the priests” — “Ah, may the priests convert, but it is the Lord who is there!” Do you understand? Do not forget it. “Participating in Mass is living again the redemptive passion and death of Our Lord”.

Please pray for our children as they prepare to receive their First Communion.

Parish Bulletin | 9th February 2020

Sr. Ann Marie Dress, BVM Announces Her Retirement

Sr. Ann Marie Dress started her vocation at St. Clare School 34 years ago. She taught fifth grade for many years, became an administrator and religion coordinator and will fin-ish her career in education as the Vice Principal of Mission and Catholic Identity come June 4, 2020. She has “survived” many St. Clare Students who continue to identify her as one of the best teachers they’ve ever had. She taught Monica Hernandez, Principal at St. Mary in Los Gatos, Stephanie Blumenson, administrator at Cristo Rey San Jose Jesuit High School, Berenice Ruiz, our TK teacher and Taylor Payton, our Kindergarten teacher. Just this Thursday, Officer Mark Shimada came by the school to let Sr. Ann Marie know that he was retiring. Officer Shimada, SCPD DARE Of-ficer from 2001-2007 recollected that he was in awe of the way Sr. Ann Marie “handled” her fifth graders and that he will never forget her. We will miss her tremendously but her beloved Dubuque, Iowa is calling her home. There, she will be closer to friends from her religious community, the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary; and to her brothers. Please join me in letting Sr. Ann Marie know that this St. Clare community will forever be home and that the love that she has given all these years will forever be felt.

ONE LOVE FEBRUARY

Jesus said, “I have given you an example so that you may copy what I have done for you.” (John 13:15) Our school community began our “ONE LOVE” campaign on Monday, February 3rd. Guided by the principles of Catholic Social Teaching, we are focusing throughout the month of February to look inwardly so that we may act outwardly. We will spend time reflecting with gratitude on what we have, the consumer “throw away” culture that permeates our world and the priorities we give to material things. In addition to a collec-tion drive for LifeMoves and Sacred Heart Community Ser-vices, we will be inviting speakers to speak about the needs in our community so that their teachers can guide them to work towards advocacy. In the younger grades, teachers will contin-ue to guide students to act with empathy and to broaden their Catholic world view to “see” those who have been made invisi-ble. The campaign will culminate in our first-ever “One Love” Day of Service on Saturday, February 29 from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. where all are invited to gather to share our faith and per-form acts of service (all age levels) including a food insecurity exercise for our junior high students. There are many details to this vision that we will communi-cate separately. For now, we ask for your prayers to have the Holy Spirit guide us in our endeavor to open our hearts to those who are struggling and those whose day-to-day reality is so different than ours. If you are interested in joining us, please contact the school office: [email protected].

Please visit www.stclare.school to learn more about our programs, our story and our welcoming community. Come and be part of a Santa Clara Tradition since 1856!

GOD’S CALL The person who has been “saved,” who has “heard the good news of salvation,” still lives in an unsaved world, a world sadly oblivious to the presence of God. Today’s readings outline how the disciple is present in the world. The outline begins with Isaiah: “Share your bread . . . shelter the oppressed . . . clothe the naked” (Isaiah 58:7). Those who hear the word of salvation are not insensitive to the urgent needs of others. Then Paul reminds his flock that he brought Christ to them not in eloquence or wisdom, but by being with them in the “weakness and fear” of their daily lives (1 Corinthians 2:3). Finally, Jesus tells his disci-ples to go out into the gloom and darkness of the streets of the world and let God’s light shine through their good deeds. We disciples don’t save the world. To the extent, how-ever, that we have heard the word of God and been awak-ened to God’s presence, we may spread that word and bring that presence to others. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
