Dear Parishioners, The Lent is upon us! Forty hours. Forty days. Forty years. All repre-sent periods of testing, preparation and purification in the Bible. The rain fell on Noah’s Ark for forty days. Moses was on top of Sinai for forty days, eating and drinking nothing before he received the Ten Commandments. The Hebrews wandered the desert for forty years on the way to the Promised Land. David reigned over Israel for forty years. Jesus was in the desert for forty days after his baptism before beginning his ministry. He was forty hours in the tomb following the crucifixion, and would ap-pear on the earth for forty days before his Ascension. Yes, in so many ways, forty is a Biblical number, and one which suggests a time of testing, preparation and purification. This is our time what Saint Paul calls the acceptable time . . . the day of salvation. It is easy to spend too much time losing focus on what matters most – storing up for ourselves treasures in heaven. Lent is a time to use prayer, penance, fasting, almsgiving, service and self-denial to gain mastery over ourselves – that we might each make of ourselves an offering to God. Being marked with ashes this coming Wednesday is reminiscent of the fast proclaimed by Joel in the first reading of the day. Joel lived in difficult times in a divided kingdom, eight centuries before the coming of Christ. To him, the end was near – always. Each day could be his last. The same could be said for all people of all time. During the end of his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus encourages us to use Lent as a time to pray, fast and give alms – not to impress others, but to humble ourselves and give glory to God. Tradition-ally, Lent is viewed as time to give something up and take something up. We are meant to give up those things that distract us from the love of God or worse, lead us into sin, that we might take up our crosses and follow Jesus to Calvary, that he might lead all of us to victory. In that way, our Father who sees in secret will repay us, in this life and in the next. May we all use these forty days as a chance to welcome some mind-ful sacrifice that will change us for the better and help us to renew our relationship with our God.

Fr. Tad

Queridos feligreses, ¡La Cuaresma ya es-tá aquí! Cuarenta horas.

Padre Tadeo

SCHOOL HAPPENINGS Sunday Children’s Program “Finding God”

Continuous Faith Formation Program

“Faith Formation is more than a subject to be taught, it is an invitation to a way of life”

Joe Paprocki. Once again, we are participating in the CRS Rice Bowl as a way to encounter Jesus through others, especially through the most vulnerable in our world.

Please explain to your children that we are asked to make little offerings on behalf of them throughout the season and the CRS Rice Bowl (cardboard box-bank) is part of that. If your child did not receive his/her box, the catechist will have one for them. Lenten Season The Lenten Season starts this Wednesday and here are some fact of this time: - Consists of the 40 days, before Easter Sunday (not in-cluding Sundays) - Ash Wednesday is the first day. On this day during the celebration people receive blessed ashes on their fore-head in the shape of a cross. - The color used for most of the season is purple, but red and white are also used. - The alleluia is not sung or said until the Easter Vigil Mass. - Fasting and prayer and almsgiving are done in prepara-tion for the holiest time for us, Christians. Many people give up a single indulgence like chocolate or any other food, media, TV, etc., others do something to bring them closer to God such as daily devotions or chari-table donations as part of their preparation. Important Dates for First Communion Parents Meeting: Tuesday, March 12, 6:00pm, Upper Church (English); Thursday, March 14, 6:00pm, Upper Church (Spanish). Interview with the Priest: April 1-4. Sign-up Sheets are available today for Sunday classes and tomorrow for St. Clare school second graders. Please keep in your prayers our children and youth as they prepare to receive the Sacraments First Communion and Confirmation.

Have you seen the commercial about the woman that climbs 58,000 steps a year (the height of Mount Everest) to stay fit? Well I think about that, but then walk the treadmill at the senior center just to finish a procession at church. Come join the Knights, who knows what heights you can

reach.

The CRS Rice Bowls are here!! As you know this Lent, our parish will once again be participat-ing in CRS Rice Bowl, a

program that helps us all to experience our Catholic faith, practice Lenten spirituality, and help people in need around the world. Each family is encouraged to take home a cardboard “CRS Rice Bowl” box-bank. They can be found at the entrances of the church. Please look through the materials included and consider using them this Lent. The Spiritual Guide-calendar contains stories of hope from people around the world who benefit from our support of CRS Rice Bowl, suggestions for weekly family activities, and recipes for simple meatless meals you can prepare on Fridays. The CRS Rice Bowl box-bank is a tangible reminder of the hunger and hardships faced by millions of people around the world who do not have enough to eat each day. The Rice Bowl also serves to hold the sacrificial contributions that families make during Lent, showing that small sacrific-es do add up. Thank you for using a CRS Rice Bowl this Lent! Visit the Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl web page or download the App for more activities and ways to help.

“Hand In Hand In Ministry” is the theme for our 2019 Annual Dioce-san Appeal. This reminds us that, as Catholics, each of us has re-ceived the invitation to join as mem-bers of one community of faith for the works of justice, mercy, out-reach and formation in our Parish-

es, our Diocese and the global Church. Your ADA gift enables us in our Evangelization work and outreach, particularly in the areas of Youth and Young Adult Min-istry, Catechesis and Faith Formation, the Hispanic Apostolate, Social Justice Ministry, the Institute for Leadership in Ministry, the Formation and Training of Seminarians and Deacon Candidates, who are our future priests and deacons, and the Ongoing For-mation of those already ordained. Only your gift, combined with the gifts of others throughout our Diocese, can make all of this possible. Please consider a gift to the ADA to help support the day-to-day services that our parishes rely on for support. Thank you in ad-vance for your generosity.

Stand And Be Counted Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a commitment in all its dimensions brings you advantages, recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner makes things much easier when it is time for infant Baptism, weddings, when asked to be a Baptismal or Confirma-tion Sponsor and even funerals. We are often asked to provide affidavits for Baptismal and Confirma-tion Sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active and contributing member.

So, are you a registered parishioner? If not please consider registering. Registration forms are available in the Church entrances and in the Parish Office.
