JULY 3, 2016

All followers of Jesus are sent out to proclaim the Good News. In the previous chapter Luke had described the sending out of the Twelve. In today's reading he sends out the 72. The instructions that Jesus gave to the 12 and to the 72 are practically the same. This means that lay-people were commissioned by Jesus to preach the Gospel. This is a vital point for our times. Every follower of Christ is called to proclaim the Kingdom of God. Even reluctant followers! What does Jesus mean when he says his disciples must be "lambs in the midst of wolves"? The prophet Isaiah foretold a time when wolves and lambs will dwell in peace (Isaiah 11:6 and 65:25). This certainly refers to the second coming of Christ when all will be united under the Lordship of Jesus after he has put down his enemies and established the reign of God over the heavens and the earth. In the meantime, the disciples must expect opposition and persecution from those who would oppose the gospel. Jesus came as our sacrificial lamb to atone for the sin of the world. We, in turn, must be willing to sacrifice our lives in humble service of our Lord and Master. Have a great July 4th weekend! Fr. Kris

HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING AT ST. CHRISTOPHER IN THE WEEK AHEAD:

“Notes” from Phil & Amy The Result is “Joy” / Rejoice because your

names are written in Heaven Our Entrance Antiphon: Your merciful love, O God, we have received in the midst of your temple. Your praise, O God,

like your name, reaches the ends of the earth; your right hand is filled with saving justice. And the First Reading from Isaiah: The prophet said, “Rejoice with Jerusalem and be glad because of her, all you who love her…As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you.” Our Responsorial Psalm 66: Let all the earth cry out to God with joy. The Second Reading from Galatians: Paul boasted only in his acceptance of the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ, for upon those who embrace the cross flow the peace and mercy of God. The Gospel Acclamation: Let the peace of Christ control your hearts; let the word of Christ dwell in you richly. Our Gospel from Luke: Jesus sent out an addi-tional seventy-two disciples to spread the good news and care for the sick. They were to take nothing with them but to rely on those they served. They were to bring the peace and goodness of God’s reign. And our Communion Antiphon: Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed the man who seeks refuge in him. Last Sunday we heard in St. Paul’s second reading “For freedom Christ set us free.” Today we hear in the Gospel very clear directives by Jesus as he sends out the seventy-two disciples, boasting of nothing but the cross of Christ and through this his grace and power are made known to his servants. Again the result of the obedience of these clear directives is “Joy.” And in our first reading and in our Psalm today the sound of “rejoicing” is echoed. That’s the message we close today’s Gospel with – “…(but) rejoice because your names are written in heaven.” That is preaching and sharing of the Lord’s peace and mercy. That is a message of glory and joy! So in the midst of a new culture of a very secular world, and violence and sadness all around us we are hearing today these evangelical scripture words of “Joy and Rejoicing.” The missalette also makes reference to the opening of Pope Francis’ “The Joy of the Gospel” where he writes that our joy is continually being reborn and beginning a new chapter of evangelization. Our focus then is definitely considered evangelical. The glory and joy of our church is past, present, and future and this glory and joy lie in the ministry of healing, preaching and sharing the Lord’s peace. Take a moment to reflect on the Glory to God we pray and sing together every Sunday at Mass. We pray the words “We praise, bless, adore and glorify you.” I always wondered about the word “bless” in there. Bless God? I think to myself no, God blesses us! But now it becomes a little more clearer at the Gloria and the presentation of the gifts and other parts of the mass that this as church together praising, we are acknowledging and praising a gift of happiness. That’s “Joy” and worth “Rejoicing” and praising about. I like to remember the interchangeable word in the Beatitudes too. --Blessed and Happy. “Blessed are the poor in spirit…, Happy the poor in spirit, theirs is the kingdom of God. Are you finding Joy in your call? Each of us can usher in a new creation! Blessings, Phil & Amy
