Fourth Sunday of Easter May 12,2019

My Mom went home to the Lord twenty-four years ago this June 6 - and I remember it like it was just yesterday. I remember her passing not in some melancholy way that keeps me mired in the past but rather in a loving way that connects me with her in the present - she

lives in Christ and Christ is found in every moment and every place of our lives. It is at Mass that I am most in touch with that presence, where heaven and earth come together in worshipping our living and loving God. I have come to believe more and more that life is about connections. For me and my family, my Mom was all about connecting. I will never forget the long messages she would leave on my phone, updating me on the goings on of the family and laying on just a bit of guilt about not having called for a while. She would always end the message with: "Love, Mom." I don't think my Mom was unique in her ministry of connecting. It is of the very nature of women who we honor on this Mother's Day to gather in and to hold together. Invoking the prayers of our Blessed Mother who wraps her mantle around all of us her children, reminding us that we are family, we celebrate today our Moms and Grandmas and Great-Grandmas. We celebrate our Step-Mothers and our Godmothers and Aunts and all who feel like a Mom in our lives. We also celebrate the great women of our church who as lay leaders and religious and as good and faithful stewards invest countless hours in serving our faith communities truly giving birth to the Body of Christ that we are called to be. There is a lyric in the musical "Les Miserables" that is sung so profoundly at the end of the play - to love another person is to see the face of God. Truly the face of God can be seen in the way our Mothers love and have loved us - unconditionally and unreservedly - seeing beyond our faults and limitations to the beauty and goodness in each of us. I know this is not the experience for all of us with the Mother given us by nature. But even then, God will find a way to mother us, for God's love always wins in the end! On behalf of our parish family I salute all the women of our parish and wish a Happy Mother's Day to our Moms wherever and whoever they may be!

O Lord, Bless our Mothers with the strength of our Spirit,

with the melody of Your love and with a place at your eternal table in heaven.

Bless them with good things and health, with joy, love and laughter.

Bless them - today and always. Amen

Stewardship

NEW STEWARDSHIP OPPORTUNITY FOR PARTICIPATION

This past September we hosted our first Nametag Weekend at our parish. It was met with lots of enthusiasm and many smiles. This was such a nice way for us to get to know each other just a bit more and to further enhance our sense of community/family. Throughout the year we have continued to celebrate Nametag Sunday on 3 other occasions. Kathleen Mc Morrow, a fairly recent new parishioner, brought this idea from her California parish and we are grateful for her guidance and leadership this year. Thank you, Kathleen for being such a great steward!

Now we are looking for 4 leaders - couples, people, or families - who are willing to lead ONE of our 4 Nametag Weekends for 2019-2020. It really is not a time intensive task, but one that requires coordinating the volunteers for the Masses on your weekend and welcoming our parish family during the weekend with a smile and a nametag. With 4 leaders, each will only be responsible for one weekend next year. If you can smile, than you are perfect. Please lend your help! To volunteer to serve in this ministry or if you have questions, please contact Lenore Luckey at 973-822-2916 or [email protected].

If you haven't yet turned in your Prayer and Participation Commitment Card, please do. Feel free to drop it into the offertory at any Mass or bring (or send) it to the parish office. Ministry Guides and Commitment Cards are available at the doors.

PRAY WITH THE SCRIPTURES: EASTER SEASON BIBLE STUDY:: The Resurrection Narratives

Please join us for this five part class to reflect and learn about the post-Resurrection appearances of Jesus. Each reading of the Scriptures brings us to a new understanding of God’s WORD for us. Easter is celebrated for 50 days and we can learn and pray with some of the important stories about the Risen Lord. All are welcome- Evening: May 14, 21, 28 and June 4 at 7:15 PM—Parish Media Ctr.

Morning: May 15, 22, 29 and June 5 at 9:15 AM—St. Peter’s Rm. Please bring your Bible!

The Trip of a Lifetime: Make a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land

NB: This pilgrimage has been rescheduled for February 9 - 18, 2020

Anytime is the perfect opportunity to travel to the homeland of Jesus. Our pilgrimage, led by Father Darwin Lastra and Jan Figenshu, will change you forever. Each group is a unique and intimate community which allows us to experience the special places of the Gospels in a new and more intimate way. Ask any of our parishioners who have gone on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and they will agree:: Traveling to the homeland of Jesus changes you forever.

The benefits of making this trip are plentiful: experience a spiritual awakening, discover the land of the Bible, gain a deeper insight and understanding of Scripture. Be transformed in ways you cannot even begin to imagine. This trip is YOUR time. We look forward to experiencing Nazareth, Mt Tabor, the Jordan River, a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee, the way of the Cross, the birthplace of Jesus, the streets of Jerusalem, and witnessing the empty tomb with you. We will stand in the sites of the Scriptures and walk in the footsteps of Jesus. Join us!! You will never be the same and you most certainly will not regret it. For more information, contact Jan Figenshu at [email protected] or ext 253.

COME REFLECT AND SHARE Members of the Pastoral Council will be hosting a series of discernment sessions for parishioners on several topics over the next few months in response to your thoughtful comments to our Parish Survey. The first topic in this series is for those parishioners who find themselves spiritually affected by the clergy abuse scandal that has permeated the Catholic Church. These meetings will be hosted by members of the Pastoral Council and will provide an open and honest forum to discuss this issue. The date of the session is below and space is limited to 12 people per group offered on a first-come, first served basis, and more will be added as the need arises. Wednesday evening, May 22, 7:30 - 9:00 pm If you are interested in participating in any of these sessions, please reach out to any member of the Parish Council (partial list below) Gene Picone: [email protected] Laura Balogh: [email protected] John Formica: [email protected]
