FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP

The Only Approved Catholic Voter Guide It has come to our attention that several organizations are sending out “Catholic” voter surveys that are confusing because they appear to be Church-approved. This is not the case.

The only official Catholic voter guide, approved by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, is Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship. In addition, Catholics in New York can also rely on the New York State Catholic Conference’s Guidelines for Political Activity. Any

other surveys, guides or voter mailings should be considered partisan and/or promotional and not reflective of the fullness of the Church’s teaching on various social issues. For more information, visit: www.usccb.org/faithfulcitizenship and www.nyscatholic.org.

BLESSING BAGS ~ During the summer months, Blessing Bags were assembled by our youth to be given to those in need. Perhaps you might like to keep 1 or 2 in your car. Please feel free to take and distribute to people you find in need. The Blessing Bags are in a red bin, in the church office located near the elevator. ADULT FAITH FORMATION - “Embracing an Alternative Orthodoxy - Fr. Richard Rohr on the Legacy of St. Francis” - a lecture series scheduled for Oct. 30; Nov. 13 & 27 at 9:45AM in Meeting Room 1. Topics central to Franciscan theology and practice covered this fall are: Atonement Theory, Eco-Spirituality, and the Christ Who Existed Before Christianity. Participants can purchase the workbook for the series on the Internet or at the Book House in Stuyvesant Plaza, Albany. The remaining topics in the lecture series will be scheduled for early 2017. For questions, please contact Dave Rowell at 729-4550 or email [email protected]

CONSECRATION TO DIVINE MERCY

Consecration to Divine Mercy is a spiritual exercise through which we receive graces to strengthen our Catholic spirituality and our ability to serve Jesus and His Church. When we participate in Divine Mercy Consecration exercises, we strive to entrust ourselves completely to Christ’s Merciful Love and further enable the Holy Spirit to perform great works of Mercy through us. The graces strengthen our courage to entrust ourselves completely to God so He can change our lives and use us as a ray of His Merciful Love from His Heart to others. During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Bishop Ed is inviting everyone is the Diocese to join him in a 33-day preparation period, beginning Tuesday, October 11, 2016, Feast of Pope St. John XXIII, and culminating with the Consecration to Divine Mercy at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Albany, on Sunday, November 13, 2016 at 5:00 PM. To aid us in preparing for the Consecration, Bishop Ed has chosen to use the book 33 Day to Merciful Love, by Fr. Michael E. Gaitley, MIC, which includes the help of St. Therese of Lisieux, Doctor of the Church. The daily reading takes only 3-5 minutes and then is pondered during the rest of one’s day. The 33-day preparation can be done alone or in a group. The book is available at a variety of locations.

RESIDENTS ENCOUNTER CHRIST

Palanca Letters & Cards Needed!

This is the season for REC Retreats (Residents Encounter Christ) in several correctional facilities in the Albany Diocese: Hale Creek, Great Meadow, Washington and Coxsackie. I am writing to ask for your prayers for all the participants and to also to request "Palanca" letters/cards for the residents. Palanca can be expressed in several ways:

♦ Prayers: a gift of spiritual support

Sacrifices: giving up or doing something you wouldn't normally do (fasting or doing that extra little thing).

♦ Works of Mercy: supporting someone in their time of need - reaching out to a brother or sister in Christ. This is expressed best in Matthew 25:40 when He said ‘The King will reply “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for Me.”

We are expecting about 60 Residents to participate at Coxsackie and 40-50 at the other Correctional Facilities. Thus we will need as many Palanca letters, prayers of encouragement and love from each of you to distribute among the residents. We understand that writing so many individual notes can be burdensome. Feel free to print them and make copies, but it is important that each one have an original signature. Please do not put a date on the letters. The following are suggested guidelines for REC Palanca: 1. Address your Palanca to "Dear Brother in Christ"; 2. Share your feelings and concern for your brother; 3. Include your prayer intention and /or sacrifices you will be doing for the residents; 4. Close the letter or card by signing your First name only There is more information and some examples of Palanca letters that you may refer to on the following website: http://www.cornerstonealumni.com/Retreat/Palanca.htm For several of the inmates who are fluent in Spanish, English is a second language. If it is possible for you to prepare about half of your letters in Spanish and half in English, that would be fantastic. If that is not possible, any effort is very well appreciated. Sorry that time is so short notice but any response is gratefully accepted. I will be happy to pick up any Palanca that are brought to church. You can leave them in the office that is near the elevator. Please contact Marggie Skinner at 489-5311 with questions.
