By1895 the urban popula t ion had increased to 37 percent , and by 1914 the majori ty o f the inhabi tan ts l ivedin urba n centers . As noted ear lie r , th i s increase wasmo s t l y d u e t o t h e immig ran t s , w h o se p ro p o r t i o nwas about 50 per cen t o f the popula t ion of a l l agesin t h e Bu en o s A i re s me t ro p o l i t an a rea an d mo r ethan one-th i rd in the o ther la rge c i t ies .

At the same t ime, the s t ruc ture of s t ra t if ica tion hadbeen dras t ica l ly modi f ied . Th e two-s t ra ta system ofthe mid-n ineteenth cen tury was rep laced by a muchmore complex s t ruc ture , in which the middle layersincreased from less than 11 per cen t o f the popula t ionin 1869, to 25 per cent in 1895, and to more than30 per cen t in 1914 . With in th is emerging middlec la ss t h e p ro p o r t i o n o f fo re ig n -b o rn w as l a rg e r t h anin the to ta l labor force . This was especia l ly t rue ofindust ry , commerce , and serv ices .
