Grand Master’s MessageGreetings Brothers:I, along with the Grand Lodge Officers performed the 100th Masonic Anniver-sary Ceremony for Stone Lodge No. 890 and the 150th Masonic Anniversary Ceremony for Phelps Lodge No. 482. It was celebrated by many Brothers, family members, and friends. We congratulate these lodges on reaching this point of longevity and were honored to have taken part in these historic events. A bright future for all of our lodges will be assured with high moral standards and Masonic teachings.

Veterans Day was on November 11, 2019. A day we set aside to honor our Veterans and to remember the sacrifices of those who fought in all our nation’s wars, to celebrate the contributions of all Veterans of Military service and en-sure that an appreciation of the values they fought for will live on in all Ameri-cans. I had the opportunity to attend the 12th Annual Appreciation Day at the Danville National Guard Armory. We, the Masons of Kentucky, are proud to help sponsor this event.

It is my hope that each of you had the opportunity to spend time with family and friends over the Thanksgiving Holiday. We have so much for which to be grateful—the many blessings we enjoy with our families, our friends and with our extended Masonic family, our freedoms and the food we have to eat. I cher-ish the Brothers that have become Friends over the years and am thankful for the opportunities Freemasonry gives and has given me.

The Ritual Competition has sparked interest in several lodges already. Some brothers are bantering back and forth about who will win this friendly competi-tion. Creating an atmosphere that may lead to a positive transformation of the brother is the goal of Masonic Ritual. It is my hope that many brothers will par-ticipate in this meaningful ritual to raise the standard of excellence in our craft.

The Grand Master’s Traveling Trowel is off to a great start. Brothers, I encour-age you to travel and claim the Trowel for your lodge. The friendships and memories that you make during your travels, you will always cherish. By trav-eling, you will continue to spread the cement of brotherly love and affection all across the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Terri and I extend our warmest and most sincere good wishes to each of you, your families and friends in hopes of having a peaceful, wonderful and blessed Christmas season. May God continue to bless our great fraternity and God Bless America!

Brothers, I encourage each of you, BE THAT MASON THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE.

Fraternally Thine,

Geary F. LairdGrand Master of Masons,Grand Lodge of Kentucky F.& A.M.

On The Cover

Brother Michael Gibson traveled to Cleveland, TN to deliver and present brother William “Bill” Davis his 65 year service pin. It was a pleasure to meet Bill, his wife of 72 years, and his daughter in law. They were truly wonderful. Brother Bill is a member of Burnside #634.

Right Angle Lodge #233Some members of Right Angle Lodge 233, Winchester, continued with their weekly clean up of Reeves Memorial Cemetery on Old Muddy Creek Pike over the weekend. Providing a huge assistance with his skid loader was Rep. Les Yates, 73rd District Congressman from Winchester. As brush was being removed, 8 previously unknown tombstones were discovered, one being completely buried by 3 inches of dirt. Helping this weekend were Right Angle 233 members Randy Martin, Ben Joynt, and Steve Talbott. Non-members, but whose help was greatly appreciated were Martin’s wife, Janice, Rep. Yates, local historian Harry Enoch, and Arline Litchfield.

Aurora Lodge #633Aurora Lodge recognized and honored the Veterans at their meeting in November - Thank you all for your service!

Knights of St. Andrew Masquerade Mystique GalaOn October 26, 2019 the Knights of St. Andrew of The Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Louisville, Orient of Kentucky, held a fund raising event the Masquerade Mystique Gala. All proceeds benefited the Scottish Rite Foundation in support of Rite Care children’s speech therapy program.

The black tie event was open to the public and began with cocktails, photo opportunities and was followed by a presentation from Evan Wil-liams to include a tasting of several bourbons. Dinner was presented and followed by dancing to the musical talents of the Wulfe Bros. and Doo Wops, featuring Amber Martin. We even had a special guest appearence by Dave Owen of the Monarchs. The event was a huge success with approximately $10,000 being raised.

Special thanks to all of our supporters including Kosair Charities, Owen Funeral Homes, L&N Credit Union, Masonic Homes of Kentucky, Evan Williams, Derb E Cigs, and all of the staff that supported us with their time and energy, especially Brother Rob Henry, the Scottish Rite Guard and Kitchen Staff. Thanks to Brother Tom Harper, Commander of the Knights, for all of his efforts and leadership.

Following the success of this event, the Knights of St. Andrews are planning to make this an annual event. Photos by: John Adkins

Masonic Library and Museum AssociationCovington Scottish Rite

“I Didn’t Know That……” The first Grand Lodge was formed in London, June 24, 1717. WHOA! WAIT! MAYBE NOT! Dr. Andrew Prescott and Dr. Susan Mitchell Sommers in their paper, “Searching for the Apple Tree: Revisiting the Earliest Years of English Organized Freemasonry” enters into great detail to state that the Grand Lodge was not formed until 1721, having discovered recent proof in searching through the minutes of Antiquity Lodge #2, of London, a descendant of the lodge that met at the Goose and Gridiron, and according to James Anderson, was one of the original four London lodges. The Antiquity Lodge minutes also suggest that the founding Grand Master was actually the 2nd Duke of Montagu.

Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite - Orient of Kentucky

In the 1738 Constitutions, Anderson claims the Duke of Montagu, was the first of the nobility to be Grand Master, but was preceded by: Anthony Sayer - 1717, George Payne - 1718, John T. Desaguliers - 1719, and again George Payne -1720. It is also here, in the 1738 Constitution, that Anderson gives his history of the organization of the Grand Lodge. He says that four old lodges met at the Apple Tree Tavern, Charles Street, in 1716 and agreed to revive the quarterly communications, the annual feast, and then meet again on St. John’ Day, 1717 at the Goose and Gridiron and where they elected Anthony Sayer, Grand Master.

The fact that Anderson did not mention his ‘history’ in his first Constitutions of 1723, and then only in the 1738 Constitutions, and there being no mention of a Grand Lodge before 1721 in the newspapers of the day or other confirmation pro or con, leaves Anderson suspect for his history. Considering the Antiquity minutes and ‘confirmation’ by Dr. William Stuckeley’s remarks, have led both Professors Prescott and Mitchell to con-clude that Anderson’s story is fabricated and the first Grand Lodge was definitely founded in 1721 with the Duke of Montagu as Grand Master.

Let’s look at the Antiquity Lodge minutes “Book E”. It shows the meeting to be “A General Assembly of a Greate Number of Freemasons” and lists the names of a large number of attendees. The Duke of Montagu swore on the Bible in part that he “firmly held and bound never to connive at any Encroachment on the Landmarks of the old Lodges in England or suffer the same to be done by his successors who shall also be bound by oath to the same.” The minutes go on to say, “This day the Free Masons of London in the name of themselves and the rest of their Brethren of England vested their separate and distinct rights and powers of congregating in Chapter & c. in the present old lodges in London in trust and the same was this day Publickly Recognised and Notified to their Brethren in Grand Lodge assembled. The Masters of the Old Lodges Accepted the Trust for their Lodges and were sworn accordingly.” There is no reason to doubt these minutes.

Add to this Dr. Wm Stuckeley’s “Commonplace Book” that he was made a Mason at the Salutation Tavern on January 6, 1721. He further stated that he was the first person to be made a freemason in many years and it was with great difficulty to find enough members to perform the cer-emony. It is seems strange that the Salutation Tavern being in the same area as three of the four founding lodges, would have difficulty finding enough brothers to initiate Dr. Stuckeley. He also reiterated the lack of masons in London at that period during other occasions but it became a “public fashion” shortly after the installation of the Duke of Montagu.

Dr. Stuckeley’s record of the Grand Lodge of 1721 and the Installation of the Duke of Montagu is a most reliable source. It compares well with the Lodge of Antiquity’s minutes and adds much to Anderson’s lengthy report. Dr. Stuckeley was there! James Anderson was not! Dr. Stuckeley was well respected. He was a physician, a philosopher and one of the founders of the Society of Antiquaries. He investigated both Avebury and Stonehenge and help found a lodge at the Fountain Tavern, serving as its first Master.

There is much more in the Sommers-Prescott paper than room allows. I have seen no ‘papers’ as yet refuting the ‘Apple Tree’ paper from any Masonic scholar, but I am sure they will come. Professor Andrew Prescott’s reputation as a Masonic historian is impeccable as is Professor Susan Mitchell Sommers, however some things are difficult to understand. Would the election of gentleman Anthony Sayer as Grand Master over four lodges even be well attended or newsworthy? Would the election of a noble as Grand Master or action taken by the Masters of the ‘old lodges’, constitute anything more than the Grand Lodge was reaching out and growing? Dr. Stuckeley mentions in his account of the 1721 meeting that George Payne was a Grand Master, which is dismissed as a possible ‘assumption’ in the ‘Apple Tree’ report. However Anderson also mentions Payne as a Grand Master in his 1723 Constitutions, in the same context as Dr. Stuckeley. This seems too close the 1721 Grand Lodge meeting and if in error, should have been caught by one of the three hundred (so the newspapers say) in attendance. Could the answer simply be that the 1717 organization of four lodges came to fruition in 1721? No doubt other Masons will have questions.

Anderson was certainly guilty of elaborating in his 1738 Constitutions, and the Sommers-Prescott well-documented paper with 121 references, appears to be a bit harsh in their conclusions on many of those involved. Perhaps the answer lies somewhere between. -----What do you think?
