Friends,Our movement is in a critical moment. As a result of our years
of collective organizing through protests, marches, boycotts, civil disobedience, lobbying, elections, and building alliances,
Congress and the President are working together to draft an immigration reform bill, with the goal of passing it this year. But our past lessons have taught us that we need to intensify the pressure on our elected officials, to ensure that it is a bill that respects the dignity of immigrant families- and that we win it this year.
We have to unite in mass numbers to win passage of a good bill in the next six months.
On page 4 are the four points that we feel are essential in any new legislation. In this edition of the Voces newspaper, you’ll find the tools you need to organize your friends and families, as this campaign gains speed. Your own organizing efforts will ensure that as President Obama and the US Congress discuss immigration reform, the voices of those most affected by these policies are front and center.

Amigos,Nuestro movimiento está en un momento crítico. Como resultado de
nuestros años de organización colectiva a través de protestas, marchas, boicots, desobediencia civil, grupos de presión, elecciones y creación de alianzas, el Congreso y el Presidente están trabajando juntos para elaborar el borrador de un proyecto de ley de reforma migratoria, con el objetivo de pasarlo este año. El 26 de enero Voces llevó a cabo su Asamblea Annual para determiner la agenda annual.

On January 26th Voces held our Annual Assembly to determine our yearly agenda.
At this meeting we planned projects and priorities for the next year, including organizing for our May 1st march, a mass national mobilization to Washington DC in April, training for undocumented families to share their stories, and preparations for congressional visits around achieving federal immigration reform this year.

1) IMMIGRATION REFORM MUST INCLUDE A PATH TO CITIZENSHIP FOR ALL 11 MILLION
A path to citizenship must be broad, simple, and affordable for the 11 million aspiring citizens in the US. Employment restrictions referenced in the principles introduced in the bi-partisan Senate plan threaten to exclude significant numbers of workers -- such as day laborers, temporary agency workers, workers paid in cash in restaurants, landscapers and more, as well as stay-at-home fathers or mothers.
Fines cannot be so steep that low income families are unable to afford the process, and the process should not be so cumbersome that workers with "probationary status" need to apply twice. A reasonable fee would be $200 per person, given that many youth eligible for Deferred Action are unable to apply because of cost.
There's no need to make the path to citizenship conditional on increased border enforcement, when we already have record low numbers of migration, and cruel enforcement policies which have only led to a human rights crisis at the border.

2) KEEP OUR FAMILIES TOGETHER: STOP THE DEPORTATIONS
The president cannot propose legislation to create new citizens while simultaneously deporting at a record rate those he claims to want to legalize. Each day that passes, 1,000 families are separated from their loved ones and face economic hardship and emotional trauma -- especially the children.
Legislative reform should address the criminalization of immigrant workers that represent no danger to society, such as minor traffic infractions or re-entry charges.
Inclusion of all families in an immigration reform bill must extend to all permanent partners, i.e. the LGBT community.
3) WORKER RIGHTS PROTECTIONSAny future flow system needs to
ensure strong worker rights protections regardless of immigration status, so some abusive employers cannot use immigrant labor as cheap labor or retaliation, undermining wages and conditions for all workers in the US. Expand U-visa qualification to cases where employers have retaliated against immigrant workers who've been organizing or for labor violations such as terminations and wage theft.
4) FUTURE FLOWSThe number of visas for jobs and
families should match the need. Provisions should reflect the demand of worker visas ensuring that migrant workers don’t get exploited or undermining US workers. This would significantly lower the number of unlawful entries.

La inclusión de todas las familias en un proyecto de ley de reforma migratoria debe extenderse a todos los compañeros permanentes, es decir, a la comunidad LGBT.
3) PROTECCIONES A DERECHOS DE LOS TRABAjADORES

Estudiantes de YES organizaron su 4ta Celebración del Día del Dr. King para encarnar los valores de servicio, justicia y comunidad en la tradición del Dr. King.
Con más de 150 estudiantes y más de 30 adultos en locales alrededor de la comunidad, 200 personas marcharon hasta la estatua de King para una reunión de derechos civiles en condiciones del tiempo con temperaturas de 15 grados, 80 estudiantes asistieron a talleres de justicia social en la tarde, y 350 miembros de la comunidad disfrutaron un programa en la noche presentado por estudiantes animadores y cantantes, líderes de la comunidad, como orador principal la líder de derechos civiles Peggy Rozga, bailarines Africanos, y una premiación por servicios presentada al Representante Robert Turner.
YES students organized their 4th Dr. King Day celebration to embody the values of service, justice, and community in the tradition of Dr. King.
Over 150 students & 30 adults volunteered at sites all over the community, 200 marched to the King statue for a civil rights rally in -15 degree weather, 80 students attended social justice workshops in the afternoon, and 350 community members enjoyed an evening program featuring student emcees and singers, community leaders, keynote speaker civil rights leader Peggy Rozga, African dancers, and a service award presented to Representative Robert Turner.

The court system is intended to serve as a checks and balances to prevent abuses by the other branches of government--and that is what is urgently needed in Wisconsin.
On April 2nd voters will have the opportunity to elect Ed Fallone for State Supreme Court judge to put in check some of the abuses of the Republican majority state legislature that passed a Voter ID law to disenfranchise more than 300, 000 voters and Act 10 which stripped public employees of their right to organize collectively in the workplace. These laws will be taken up by the State Supreme Court in the future. His opponent Rogensack is a rubber stamp for Walker's agenda.
In addition, we have elections that will impact quality education in our schools. Dr. Tony Evers deserves our vote to be re-elected for Superintendent of Public Instruction, to advocate and protect public education and libraries in Wisconsin, in a period of severe cuts and efforts to privatize. His opponent is a right wing nut job. Don Pridemore sponsored Wisconsin's version of an Arizona SB1070 law and another bill that charged single mothers as the greatest reason for child abuse.
In Milwaukee and Racine there are critical school board elections. In Milwaukee, we have the chance to elect Dr. Tatiana Joseph, to the local school board race in the newly created majority Latino school district.
Both Joseph and Fallone, as Latino candidates, represent Latino political empowerment that is giving voice to our growing community in Wisconsin, as we saw in the November elections.
But that is only the case, if Latinos go out and vote.

Miembros del Sindicato de Trabajadores de Palermo dieron la bienvenida a un nuevo informe publicado por el independiente Consorcio de Derechos de los Trabajadores (WRC), una organización de vigilancia de derechos laborales, que encontró que Pizza Palermo está involucrada en una campaña antisindical ilegal y constante en su fábrica de pizza congelada de Milwaukee.
El WRC se estableció para evitar los abusos de explotación en las fábricas maquiladoras que producen ropa y otros productos para los colegios y universidades estadounidenses.

Members of the Palermo Workers Union welcomed a new report released today by the independent Workers Rights Consortium (WRC), a labor rights monitoring organization, which finds that Palermo’s Pizza is engaged in an illegal, ongoing anti-union campaign at their Milwaukee frozen pizza factory.
The WRC was established to prevent sweatshop abuses in factories that produce apparel and other products for US colleges and universities.
The report, which can also be found at www.workersrights.org/Freports/Palermo.asp, is titled Worker Rights Consortium Assessment: Palermo Villa, Inc. (Milwaukee, WI) Findings, Recommendations, and Status, and issues a damning indictment against Palermo’s for “serious violations of worker rights,” alleging that “these violations remain ongoing.”
It provides new details of the specific violations of federal law found by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in its complaint against the company, and concludes that Palermo’s violated US and international laws, as well as a University of Wisconsin labor code to which Palermo’s is a party.
New Report Reveals Palermo’s Manipulated Immigration Audit Inmigración
UW-Madison labor code violations also implicates Palermo’s and Roundy’s
Specifically, the WRC report confirms: – Palermo’s violated federal labor law when it used an immigration
audit as pretext to retaliate against workers’ exercise of freedom of association.
– Palermo’s hostility to unionization was the motivating factor governing their threatening and retaliatory behavior towards employees.
– Palermo’s violated federal labor law when it permanently replaced some 30 striking workers who were not asked to reverify their work documents.
– Palermo’s violated UW-Madison’s code of conduct governing a licensing agreement with Roundy’s.
– Palermo’s engaged in a pattern of illegal “unfair labor practices” that were calculated to coerce workers from exercising their rights.
“This proves again that Palermo’s trampled on our rights as workers, and broke the law repeatedly,” said Raul de la Torre, a leader of the Palermo Workers Union. “We’re not going to stop fighting until we get justice, and this report will help us in that fight as we take our case to Washington, DC.”
En concreto, el informe del WRC confirma:- Palermo’s violó la ley federal del trabajo cuando utilizó una
auditoría de inmigración como pretexto para tomar represalias contra los trabajadores que ejercían la libertad de asociación.
- La hostilidad de Palermo’s a la sindicalización era el factor motivador que dirigía su comportamiento amenazante y de represalia hacia los empleados.
- Palermo’s violó la ley federal del trabajo cuando reemplazó en forma definitiva a unos 30 trabajadores en huelga, a quienes no se les pidió verificar sus documentos de trabajo.
- Palermo’s violó el código de conducta de la UW-Madison, el cual rige un acuerdo de licencia con Roundy’s.
- Palermo ha incurrido en un patrón de ilegales "prácticas laborales injustas" que se calcularon para coaccionar a los trabajadores ejercer sus derechos.
