Does your garden pass
the ponding tes t?
Planting is, of course, the funpart of the process. But beforeplanting, let your gardenhandle several rainstorms first,to ensure that your soilamendments have settledappropriately, and toguarantee that water will not
pond in the garden more thanthree days. If done properly, excess rainfall will flow overthe garden and continueacross your lawn, and water"harvested" by the garden willbe absorbed within 24 hours. Ifwater ponds for three days ormore, you will need to improvethe soil with more organicamendments and possiblylower the downslope side ofthe garden to improve runoff.

Flexible downspouts can deliver water toyour garden, or you might bury corrugateddrainage pipe in a trench and bring it towithin one or two feet of the garden. It isimportant to allow rainwater to run over agrassy area or planted buffer before reachingthe garden. You do not want a surge ofrainwater to start eroding soils and washing
away mulch.
What P lants Should I Use?
The plants you select for your raingarden are often unlike those usedin conventional settings. Nativeperennials that enjoy moist andeven saturated soils will thrive inyour garden, and will encouragevisitation by butterflies, hummingbirds, and other nectarand berry feeders. Your pallettecan include swamp milkweed, columbine and asters, ironweed, lobelia, blue flag, bluebells andbluestem grasses, bee balm, ferns, sedges and switchgrass, boneset, gentians, liatris, andmuch more.
OptionalUnderdrain
A Finished Garden. Photo courtesy ofVir inia De artment of Forestr .You will need to consider sun
or shade exposure, how moistyour garden soil is and theduration of wetness, and also
think about how well your plantselections can tolerate droughtperiods.
Many of these natives are nowsold by local nurseries, whereexperienced horticultural staffcan help match suitable plantswith your rain garden needs.(see the Rainscapes NativePlant Nurseries Factsheetforsome local suppliers.)
