Program Overview This comprehensive, two-day course will provide your facility the tools to begin TeamSTEPPS™ training in one focused unit. Trainers will be coached by national TeamSTEPPS™ experts who have experience imple- menting TeamSTEPPS™ tools and strategies in many diverse healthcare arenas. The training will include: Guidance and tools to obtain a baseline assessment of your target unit’s culture of teamwork and patient safety (pre-work) AHRQ TeamSTEPPS™ Instructors Guide and Pocket Guide Templates for TeamSTEPPS™ posters and checklists An overview of the TeamSTEPPS™ program including in-depth learning on the four key TeamSTEPPS™ modules: Team Leadership and Events, Communication, Situational Monitoring and Mutual Support Development of a TeamSTEPPS™ Aim Statement Development of your TeamSTEPPS™ Guiding Team Tools for tracking success through monthly data collection and sharing Expert support and coaching as you develop an outline of your implementation plan Proven strategies for creating a solid sustainability plan Collaborative discussions on tools and strategies for overcoming system and team level challenges Strategies for maintaining the engagement, support and buy-in of administrative leaders Ongoing support from expert TeamSTEPPS™ faculty A follow-up half-day meeting to review data tracking and collaborate around successes and challenges to TeamSTEPPS™ implementation, sustainability and spread Setting Your Team Up for Success We recommend implementing TeamSTEPPS™ tools and strategies in a pilot unit. Bring together a multidisciplinary team from that unit to attend the TeamSTEPPS™ Train-the-Trainer Plus course. The team members should be representative of the team that works together every day, and those who are actively interested in improving their unit’s culture of teamwork and safety. This team should be made up of influential staff who are highly regarded by their peers and who can leverage resources, action and support for the implementation of this program. Don’t forget to include a representative from your support staff, such as secretaries and ancillary staff who work side by side with your nurses and providers. Pre-work Activities Pre-work activities will include data collection, a staff survey and evidence of tangible leadership support for your TeamSTEPPS™ initiative. A pre-training call will be convened to address questions you might have as your team prepares for this course. Ongoing Support This is a journey, not a destination! Therefore support along the way is essential to your success. By attending this course you will have access to TeamSTEPPS™ expert faculty via telephone consultation, as you plan, organize, customize and implement TeamSTEPPS™ training in your pilot unit. Within six months of the training session course you will be invited to a follow- up half-day meeting to share your success and your challenges as you collaborate with expert faculty and other teams around strategies and tools that are leading your team to a culture change. About the Speakers

Jim Rost, MDJim Rost, MD, is a board-certified neonatologist and the Chief Medical Officer at Adventist Health Care, Washington Adventist Hospital. He is a Department of Defense trained Master TeamSTEPPS™ Trainer who has been leading

complex and diverse, hospital-based, medical and surgical teams to plan, organize, customize and implement teamwork training initiatives nationally under the auspices of TeamSTEPPS ELITE®, LLC. Jim is proud to serve as chairperson of the Maryland Patient Safety Center Board of Directors.

Jennifer Ustianov, MS BSN RN Jennifer Ustianov, MS BSN RN is the Senior Director for the National Institute for Child Health Quality (NICHQ). She provides extensive knowledge in quality improvement methodology, teamwork models, patient safety and

system re-design, guiding translation to frontline health professionals in clinical and community settings. She is an AHRQ TeamSTEPPS™ Master Trainer with over a decade of national experience in TeamSTEPPS™ training and implementation with a keen focus on sustaining change. Under the auspices of TeamSTEPPS ELITE®, LLC., Jennifer provides support and expertise in the field of teamwork and patient safety to The Maryland Patient Safety Center and Mednax NICU Safety Program. Jennifer remains active clinically as a perinatal nurse and is a passionate volunteer in her community.
