2 “Advent: Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love” December 2, 2018

Dear Mary Star of the Sea Parishioners, I wish you all a Blessed Advent, a beautiful time of year when we prepare ourselves spiritually for the coming of the Christ Child at Christmas. These four weeks offer us an opportunity to slow down and reflect on the true meaning of Christmas and the reality that God so loved the world that He sent His Beloved Son as a babe to save us from our sins, what a remarkable gift for each of us. I encourage all to take the spiritual opportunity this Advent to grow closer to Christ especially through Confession and Holy Mass, thus preparing ourselves for the “Adventus” the Coming of the Babe of Bethlehem. In the upcoming season we see a great deal of Angels in art and elsewhere, I thought it might be helpful to learn about them and how much they do for us here on earth as well as in Heaven. Have a Blessed Week.

Fr. Harrigan - The Pastor

NINE CHOIRS OF ANGELS First Tier - Serve and Reflect the Love and Majesty of God

Seraphim Consumed with Fire for Love of God Cherubim The Power and Glory of God Manifested Thrones Manifest the Justice and Authority the Almighty

Second Tier - Governs all Creation 4. Dominions Control the Order of the Universe 5. Virtues Responsible for the Elements and Seasons 6. Powers Responsible for Spiritual Warfare

Third Tier - Serves Humans and Reflects that service back to God 7. Principalities Governs nations, cities, sacred places, governments 8. Archangels There are 7 that we know of 3 are named in Scripture:

Michael – Which means “Who is Like God?” Gabriel – Which means “God’s strength” Raphael – Which means “God heals”

9. Guardian Angels Assigned to every human person at the moment of their conception. Their job is to assist us in getting to our final destination – Heaven.

Prayer Intention of The Holy Father for the month of December

Evangelization – In the Service of the Transmission of Faith

That people, who are involved in the service and transmission of faith, may find, in their dialogue with culture, a language suited to the conditions of the present time.

prayer, in the Adoration Chapel, praying before the Blessed Sacrament.

Keep Santa visits safe and secret-free

It’s the Christmas season, which means children around the archdiocese will be lining up for a picture with Santa and a chance to tell him what they hope to find under their trees this year. The Santa visit is a fun holiday tradition, but it’s not a time when parents can let their guard down. Santa and his helpers are usually volunteers and may not have gone through screenings or tests to ensure your child’s safety, so it’s up to you. Keep an eye on anything happening while your child visits with Santa. Never step away from the action, even for a moment, and don’t allow your children to be led away to another room. For a copy of the complete VIRTUS® article, “Safety for Children AND Santa’s Helpers,” visit http:// www.la- archdiocese.org/org/protecting/ Pages/ VIRTUS- Current-Online-Articles.aspx.

1-2 Diciembre

WEEKLY HOLY HOUR On Wednesdays at 6:00 PM

In order to convert America and save the World what we need is for every parish to come before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament in Holy Hours of prayer (Saint Mother Teresa). Every Wednesday at 6:00 PM there is a Holy Hour in the church. It begins with exposition of The Blessed Sacrament. Within the hour, there is a rosary, followed by a time of silent reflection and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. The Holy Hour concludes with Benediction. Please come and spend one hour with Jesus. This is a special time of abundant blessings for all!

Christian Care

In the pews you will find envelopes to raise money for Christian Care which is OUR department that helps the local

poor. You can come by any day of the week Mon thru Fri at 5pm and you will see us feeding the poor on 7th street. To be able to do this we need donations. If you can't make one large donation please take as many envelopes as needed and drop them in the mass collection when you have a little extra for the poor it will get to Christian Care. We have been doing this for 30 years and our lines seem to be getting larger lately. We feed approximately 50 to 60 people daily Men, women, and children come to our door.

For more information Lisa Stinis (310) 710-7995.

On Tuesday, December 4th from 9:00 – 10:00 am our Lectio Divina group will meet in the convent chapel.

We welcome new comers to join us and share in our group prayer. Our format is reflection and sharing on the Word of God as it is given to us in the Sunday gospel of the previous Sunday. We look forward to the presence of all who can attend after the 8:00 am Mass, on Tuesday, December 4th and on the following month, January 8, 2019.

For more information Sister Loretto, SJC

During Advent, Christian Care will be accepting new warm socks, underwear, and t-shirts to be given out during the Monday through Friday evening meals. It's amazing how a clean piece of clothing can make a person feel so much better. Please leave your donations for men or women at the Sacred Heart altar after any mass. God Bless you for your generosity!

FFFAITHAITHAITH FFFORMATIONORMATIONORMATION

Today we begin the new Liturgical year as we celebrate the First Sunday of Advent. Today’s gospel paints a frightening picture of huge natural calamities heralding the end. But we are called to look beyond them to see the light, the beauty of God’s promise. Our Redeemer is coming; indeed he is in our midst. Regardless of what we must go through, whether it be disaster or the slavery of sin, our merciful and loving God is waiting to wrap warm and tender arms around us.

ADULT SACRAMENTS: Sessions to prepare for the reception of Confirmation and First Communion will begin on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 from 7:00 – 8:30 pm in Room 111.

Recycling: Thank you to all who help us to recycle so that we can purchase resources for the children. We are also helping to save the earth.

If you need further information on any of the above programs please call Sister Mary or Jamie
