Dear Mary Star of the Sea Parishioners: In the Scriptures, Satan and the demons are mentioned 130 times. There is much confusion these days about evil in the world. The truth is the Satan is real and wants to drag as many souls to hell as possible. Our Blessed Lord wishes just the opposite. Below is a quick piece on 5 popular myths circulating in the modern world. I hope you find it helpful. Have a blessed week. Fr. Harrigan Pastor

“The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he does not exist.”

It might not seem very “modern” to believe in demons, but that doesn’t change the facts. The Catholic Church very much still teaches about the reality of the demonic in our world today; if fact, the Holy Father Pope Francis has especially emphasized this fact. This is important, because it’s hard to fight against things you don’t acknowledge even exist. Here are 5 of the most common myths about demons: Myth 1: Demons don’t really exist Truth: Demons are not just a metaphor or a poetic expression of evil. Divine revelation and the Church’s teaching is clear: demons are real and active in the world right now. Myth 2: Exorcisms aren’t real Truth: Exorcism isn’t just for movies: in fact, Jesus performed exorcisms in the Gospels and the Church has always continued this aspect of his ministry, even to the present day. The Vatican actually offers special training for priests appointed to be exorcists by their bishop, and if you’ve received a Catholic baptism you’ve received a minor exorcism. Myth 3: Occult practices are just harmless fun Truth: Occult practices can sometimes actually engage with real demons and are thus very dangerous and sinful. The Catechism makes this clear: “All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to ‘unveil’ the future. Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone. “All practices of magic or sorcery, by which one attempts to tame occult powers, so as to place them at one’s service and have a supernatural power over others – even if this were for the sake of restoring their health – are gravely contrary to the virtue of religion.” (CCC 2116-2117) Myth 4: Even if demons exist, they can’t do anything Truth: Actually demons are highly involved in human affairs, mostly by tempting us to sin and abandon Christ. In rare situations, they can harass a person more explicitly or even engage in possession. Many saints engaged in explicit and physical battle with demons. Myth 5: There’s nothing we can do about demons Truth: There’s much we can do! Our Jesus Christ has definitely defeated the powers of darkness, and with his grace we can be free of their influence as well. Mostly, this involves frequent reception of the Sacraments, prayer, penance, and a pursuit of holiness. In rare cases, this may mean seeking the help of a trained and properly authorized exorcist.

Beyond the sadness - feelings of fear, anger, guilt, regret and despair often arise creating a sense of confusion and uncertainty for the bereaved, as well as for those around them. These challenging emotions however, can be a source for spiritual awakening and offer valuable insights to become skills to navigate the process of grief in an emotionally healthy manner. In this four- week series facilitated by Willow List, Certified grief, loss & life transitions counselor and clinical trauma specialist, participants will share and gain mutual support of their loss experience, as well as learn techniques for self-care and tools to transform their treasured memories into opportunities for a meaningful new pathway to move forward. Mary Star of the Sea Elementary

Last Friday night, Mary Star of the Sea Elementary held our first “Back to School Bingo” fundraiser. It was an amazing night of food, fun, and bingo with over 90 players in attendance! Proceeds from the night are going toward upgrade and supplies for our school’s science lab and STREAM curriculum. During the event, representatives of the St. Anne’s Society presented MSSE with a check for $600 toward that goal, gathered from their previous bingo night. With the help of the St. Anne’s Society, Knights of Columbus Angels Gate chapter members and our fantastic Parent Board, we more than doubled that total last Friday! Thanks to all that attended. Mark your calendars for Friday, December 13 for MSSE’s “Jingle Bingo”.

Together, following the principles of Faith - Family - Country, we will continue raise the spiritual and academic lives of our children. MSSE is accepting applications for our Pre K thru 8th Grade classes. Financial Aid and sliding Tuition scale are possible with completed application; please call our Office (310)831-0875 to arrange for a tour and information. God Bless, Mr. James Cordero Principal

DID YOU KNOW? The right kind of touch is important for children

Children are often naturally affectionate and trusting, and this can lead to unexpected hugs or touches that indicate their love for the adults in their lives. For adults who are aware that some touching can be inappropriate or can ap- pear to be a boundary violation even though it was initiated by the child, it can be difficult to respond in these instances. Healthy, appropriate touch is important for children. Use these instances as teachable moments where you can affirm your affection in words and guide an appropriate touch by description and example. Some examples of this could inc- lude patting a child on the shoulder or back, high fives, holding hands out of the classroom or when crossing the street, or helping a young child tie his shoelaces. As part of our commitment, the Archdiocese has updated the www.archla.org/protect website with valuable informa tion and resources on how to protect our children and young people from child sexual abuse. For more informa- tion, read the VIRTUS® article “The Healing Power of Touch, Part II” at http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/ protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx.
