Dear Parishioners of Mary Star of the Sea, God so loved the world that He sent his only Son, not to condemn the world but to save it. This is the precious message of Christmas to each and every soul on earth. You and I participate in this wondrous gift from God every Christmas and in fact every day. Jesus, the babe in Bethlehem, has come to save our souls and to bring us the Christmas joy here on earth and for all eternity. If we wish to participate in this joy both on earth and in eternity we must receive the Christ Child like Mary and Joseph, with open arms and open hearts. Let us open the manger of our hearts in this Holy Season so the Christ Child can save us both now and for all eternity. Thank you all once again for your continued support and generosity to our Parish, to me your Pastor and to all the priests, deacons, and staff here at Mary Star of the Sea. May the Christ Child grant you His abundant blessings and graces in this Christmas Tide and the New Year. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Harrigan Pastor

This last week, all students participated in Las Posadas. All school mass was followed by a procession to the gym where students, dressed as Mary and Joseph, led the school in their journey to find shelter. The celebration concluded with piñatas, food and song. We are all on a journey, seeking our place to belong. Mary Star of the Sea Elementary and Preschool is that place for so many and our doors are always open to those seeking to join our school family.
Please save the date, January 25, for our 18th annual “Casino Night Gala”! This year’s theme is “‘70s Disco Party”, so open up that closet and get out the old sequined jumpsuit and Angel’s Flight bell bottoms. It’s going to be a great evening of food, music, gaming and fun; all while raising much needed financial support for MSSE. Call the Office (310.831.0875) for information and tickets.
In concluding the final weeks of Advent, the students of Mary Star of the Sea Elementary were very busy continuing our prayers and good deeds. Through traditions new and old, students and staff have prepared for the coming of Our Lord. We hope that you have received many blessings during this time of preparation and waiting. Thank you for the many blessings you gave our school families with your participation in our Christmas Giving Tree. May the Christmas spirit be with you now and throughout the new year. Merry Christmas from the MSSE family.
God Bless, Mr. Cordero Father Benedict Father Patrick Principal Rector Chaplain

On November 18th, Junior Representatives, Carlee Carter and Cheryl Razonable, hosted our annual Fall Blood Drive in our school gymnasium. These two students attended a summer workshop at Knott’s Berry Farm that prepared them to run a successful drive. With the help of The American Red Cross, we collected 51 pints of blood! This amount will save approximately 103 lives. Mark your calendars now for our Spring Blood Drive: Monday, March 16, 2020.

On this the Fourth Sunday of Advent, we listen atten-tively to the words of the prophet Isaiah, to the dream of Joseph, and the promise of the eternal God
who takes flesh in the womb of the Virgin. The birth of Jesus into human history was the true fulfillment of the hopes and longings, dreams and desires of the people of ancient Israel.
Like us, now and again, Joseph is tackling a troubling decision. As a man of deep faith, he pleads for wis-dom from Yahweh to proceed with kindness towards his betrothed Mary and with fidelity to the Torah. He makes a decision that is difficult and painful; but then, because he remains trusting and open, new understanding breaks through in a dream. In his sleeping state, Joseph allowed God to speak to the depths of his heart and to offer a resolution to his dilemma that his human reason had failed to discern.
Let us pray to have the faith and trust in God as Jo-seph did. What a wonderful example he is for us when life gets turned upside down. When this hap-pens let us pray to Joseph! May we remember Jo-seph who remained open and so knew most inti-mately the love of Emmanuel. ADULT CONFIRMATION classes will begin on TUESDAY, JANUARY 7 2020 from 7:00 -8:30 pm in Room 111 in the Religious Education Building. Register now to reserve your place. The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated on Monday, March 23, 2020 at 6:00 pm at Mary Star of the Sea church.
RECYCLING: Thank you to all who help us to recycle so that we can purchase resources for the children.
If you need further information on any of the above programs please call Sister Mary or Jamie at 310-833-3541, ext. 221, 222.

My body, my rules In all the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, it can be easy for children to get overwhelmed — with parties and holiday get togethers, they may be seeing lots of new or unfamiliar family members and friends. It’s important to remind children that they can say no to hugs, kisses, and other physical signs of affection if they are uncomfortable. Review “my body, my rules,” and give children polite ways to decline any signs of affection that they don’t want to give or receive. A simple “no thank you” to a request for a hug, or deflecting to a high-five, gives a child important control over who touches him or her, and how he or she feels in any situation.
