2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time January 19, 2020

Fr. Ma in

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Welcome to the second Sunday of ordinary time. Sometimes the word ‘ordinary’ can seem bland and uninteresting and we may be inclined to switch off but ‘ordinary’ for God is neither bland nor uninteresting but enlightening and engaging. Hmmm, what parts of my life do I need enlightening, where do I need to en-gage more? More importantly, what is my source of enlightenment or what attracts or engages me?

Over Christmas/New Year’s I had mentioned reading faith based/spiritual books and watching some faith based TV shows/programs – the thing about ‘ordinary’ is that we fall back into our ordinary ways, reading the same old material and watching the same old material. This year why not strive to become an extraordinary Christian person in a very ordinary world.

SPECIAL COLLECTION FOR THE CHURCH IN LATIN AMERICA — JANUARY 26TH

Next week, we will take up the Collection for the Church in Latin America. For many in Latin America and the Caribbean, a rising secular culture, difficult rural terrain, and a shortage of ministers all present obstacles to practicing faith. Your support for the collection provides lay leadership training, catechesis, priestly and religious formation, and other programs to share our Catholic faith with those who long to hear the od News of Christ. To learn more about how your gifts make a difference, visit www.usccb.org/latin-america.

Permission slip and a check for $25 made out to Mary, Mother of the Church Parish are due by 1/29/2020. CONFIRMATION CANDIDATES PRAYER CARDS Our 8th graders will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation this May. We invite you to pray for our 54 young teens as they take their final steps towards receiving the Holy Spirit. Individual Pray Cards are available in Holy Assumption and St. Mary’s for each teen. Please take one and pray daily for them. Additional prayer cards are available if you would like to pray for the whole grade. CLASS ATTENDANCE Regular class attendance and promptness are signs that parents and students recognize the importance of Religious Education. Our experience has been that if your child does not attend on a regular basis they will find it difficult to understand the subject matter and to keep up with the class. As stated on page 3 of the Parent Handbook – In the event of excessive absenteeism, a child may be delayed in moving to the next level! Email reminders will be going out over the next week for those children that have missed quite a few already. At this time, we are over half way through our program. Each family received a handbook at the beginning of the year. The handbook can also be found on our RE website. FIRST PENANCE Our 2nd Graders will be receiving their First Penance Sacrament this February. Please pray for all our boys and girls that they may open their hearts and minds to this beautiful sacrament of forgiveness. Help them turn to God for forgiveness. Those with true sorrow that confess their sins will be granted absolution.

In the Gospel after Jesus was baptized, John testified saying, “I saw the Spirit come down like a dove…and remain upon him.” John did not know Jesus before the baptism but once he saw him and the presence of the Spirit - he knew and then he testified. We testify to Jesus’ identity by being faithful to the ordinary things in life. This is not a one time event but rather a continuous process of growth and understanding of who Jesus is and how to live our life by doing God’s will. As you place your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in the collection basket, know that you are a sign of God’s Spirit of love to those who are suffering.
