Principal’s Report
5:00 p.m. Submitted by: Cliff Gabor, Principal
Mary Lyon Mission
Mary Lyon Elementary School will provide an environment for student growth so that they have the opportunity to be on track to meet /
exceed goals and objectives in their continuing education and become college ready. All students will be developed as a whole child in order
to use all their talents and creativity in their roles as adults in the 21st century.
Continuous Improvement Work Plan – (CIWP) Strategies / Priorities Diverse Learning Education is embedded in all of our strategies for our Continuous Improvement Work Plan - (CIWP) If we do the Mary Lyon Balanced Literacy Program by aligning CCSS curriculum, materials, support staff, professional
development focused on differentiated instructional practice, vertical curriculum alignment, family support and
partnerships then we will see teacher differentiated instructional practice improvement in the Core Literacy Program
and student achievement improvement on the NWEA growth targets for each student as they complete and analyze their
data informed NWEAMOY action plans which leads to achieving our Growth and Attainment goals for
the NWEA Targets of 70% on Reading as well as the On-track 70% target established in the 2018-19 SQRP. If we do the Mary Lyon CCSS Mathematics Program by aligning grade level scope and sequence, materials, support staff,
professional development, and family support then we will see teacher differentiated instructional practice improvement
in the Lyon Mathematics Program and student achievement improvement on the NWEA growth targets for each student
as they complete and analyze their data informed NWEA MOY action plans which leads to achieving our Growth and
Attainment goals for the NWEA targets of 70% on Math as well as the ON-Track 70% target established in the 2018-
19 SQRP. If we do the continued implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards in all grades and in 6-8th grade follow
the using the Science Education for Public Understanding Program (SEPUP) then we will teachers uniformly
implementing the Next Generation Science Standards and students being successful in the NGSS Science standards, as
measured by the Illinois State Science assessments in 5th and 8th Grades which leads to achieving our Growth and
Attainment Goals for the NWEA Targets of 70 % in Reading, Math and On-Track Rate because of vocabulary,
informational text comprehension and increased exposure and comfort with complex math formulas and ideas. If we do quality bilingual instruction and provide the necessary English Learner (EL) instructional materials,
professional development, EL reading support staff and increase EL parent involvement. Then we will see teachers'
consistent and effective use of WIDA standards to differentiate instruction based on students' English Language
Proficiency levels which leads to an increased number of EL students reaching proficiency as measured by the ACCESS
assessment. If we do an integrated social emotional learning program which includes a focus on fine arts programming, restorative
and progressive discipline, attendance, after-school sports and after-school clubs. Then we will see increased teacher and
student participation in all Mary Lyon programs which leads to achieving our SQRP targets of 70% in reading and on-
track rate, positive student and parent comments on the 2018-2019 My School, My Voice Survey, the dropping of referral
rates and maintaining and improving our attendance rate to 96%.
Theory of Action
The Situation
At Mary Lyon, our tier one instruction is very strong, as evidenced by our high attainment numbers, but we have not been able to push every student, as suggested by the plateauing of our growth numbers last school year.
We believe that our reliance on predominantly whole group instruction in our middle and upper grades has led to great attainment, but also limited our ability to impact every child. Therefore, we believe that if we are able to successfully and efficiently implement differentiated, small-group
2
instruction throughout the school, we will be able to influence every student and positively impact their growth on the NWEA MAP exams.
Maintain constant focus on improving our MTSS (Academic and SEL), DL / EL student progress
