Dear Parishioners of Mary Immaculate and Saint Rose,

On May 13, 1917 at Fatima, Portugal, three young shepherds experienced an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Mary promised to appear to them on the 13th of every month for seven months.

Fatima is one of the most well-known of the apparitions of Mary that is approved by the Church. When Mary appears on earth, there is always a call to conversion. At Fatima, she asked that people turn to her Son, Jesus. She encouraged that use of the sacrament of confession. She encouraged the recitation of the rosary for the conversion of sinners.

The three shepherd children were Jacinta, Francisco, and Lucia. Jacinta and Francisco were to die shortly after the visions were finished. It is interesting to note that they both contracted the Spanish Flu and never fully recuperated from that deadly disease. Perhaps it would be wise of us to pray asking these little shepherds to intercede for us during our current pandemic. Jacinta and

Francisco were canonized in 2017 and their bodies are buried in the basilica in Fatima. They are the youngest non-martyrs to be declared saints. Lucia lived much longer. She became a nun and lived to be 97 years old. She died February 13, 2005.

The Blessed Virgin taught the three children to pray the rosary properly. They prayed a rather abbreviated version before this. She taught them several prayers, one of which is commonly added to the end of each decade of the rosary:

O, my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, and lead all souls to heaven, especially those most in need of thy mercy.

I am in 6th grade and I like to read. I chose Sandy Lammers as my sponsor because she is my piano mentor and is very close to me. She encourages me to work hard and to achieve my goals. My patron saint is Saint Hubertus of Liège because he is the patron saint of mathematicians and cured rabies in the early 20th century. What I love about being Catholic is attending Mass and the traditions of what Catholics follow.

I’m in 7th grade. For fun I play baseball and football, show cattle, go tubing, swimming and fishing. I like to help with chores on the farm, cut firewood, and work cattle. I like to hang out with friends and family. I chose as my patron, St. Christopher. He is the saint that protects baseball players, the field, and game. I love having a large Catholic/Christian family.

I’m in 7th grade. I play soccer/run, I love to do rock climbing and rope courses, I like climbing trees, I ride my bike at home, I sometimes like to sew, and I like to draw. Tara Seedorf is my sponsor. She is very faithful and I look up to her for a ton of things especially things about church, she is also very kind and sweet! My confirmation saint is Saint Rita of Cascia. I chose her because she tended to the sick and helped the ill. I am interested in going to medical school one day. I love the fact that being Catholic feels comfortable and I know what the routine is when we go. I like that the history of the Catholic faith makes it feel very meaningful. I also like the way they teach us about the Bible. I’ve been praying a lot more often; it helps guide me in the ways I treat other people and I now always think about my faith in my daily actions.

Bishop McKnight’s Prayer Intention for May: As we honor the Mother of our Lord as the “Queen of May,” may there be a greater respect and appreciation for all

women on earth who nourish us in mind, body and soul.

The Holy Father’s Prayer Intention for May: For Deacons We pray that deacons, faithful in their service to the Word and the poor, may be an invigorating symbol for the entire Church.

I’m in 7th grade. I enjoy playing baseball, playing card and board games, and learning to play guitar. I like going to Baring lake in the summer to spend time with my cousins. I have learned that being Catholic is more than just going to church. It is following God throughout my day and living my faith daily. I love being Catholic because I always count on God and my faith community to be there when I need them. I love that Mass is always the same around the world. St. Luke is my patron saint. It seems he liked to help those in need and I would like to do that too.

I’m in 7th grade. For fun I like crafting, baking, gaming, and swimming. My patron is St. Nunzio Sulprizio, who is really cool because he went through so much as a kid but that didn't stop him from following God and growing his relationship with Him. He stayed caring, gentle, & kind-hearted through it all because he remained faithful and followed God's will. He's just really inspiring to me. I love the community of the Catholic Church and I really love Monsignor Cox's homilies. I'm learning more in depth about His gifts, the Eucharist, what Virtues & Sins are, and so much more!

I’m in 7th grade. My parents are Ryan and Kristi Groseclose. I have a brother named Spencer, and a sister, Lilyann. For fun I like riding horses, playing with bottle calves and playing with our pigs. St. Dymphna is my patron because I want to be a therapist. I asked Riley Vonder Haar to be my sponsor because I look up to her. Being Catholic means community, and I am understanding more about my faith every year.

I’m in 7th grade. I like doing gymnastics and spending time with family. My patron is Saint Bernadette and my sponsor is Tim Korman. In PSR my faith has grown a bunch. I’ve learned so much. I have learned about saints and how to pray to them. I’ve learned that it’s okay to ask questions and to dig deeper.
