A well-known sportsman & coaching enthusiast, Tiffany commissioned the coach in 1892 for a record-breaking drive from Paris to Trouville, France. Coach enthusiasts considered English mail coaches to be the fast-est horse drawn vehicles. For the design, Tiffany acquired an 1835 pattern for a famed mail coach from the General Post Office in London. He then hired the renowned Paris carriage builder, Million-Guiet & Cie, to manufacture the coach. At its completion, the coach was christened “The
Herald.” Tiffany and his passengers made the 140 mile trip from Paris to Trouville on July 12, 1892. Beating the historic time, the trip took 10 hours and 40 minutes. Along with Tiffany and his driver, passengers included T. Suffern Tailer, the carriage’s subsequent owner, newspaperman, James Gordon Bennett and an unidentified “Mr. Guiet”, possibly the carriage maker. Tailer pub-lished an account of the trip in Century magazine in November 1892. He acquired the coach soon after the race and renamed it “Lightning”. He subsequently brought it to the United States and in 1927 presented it to Loew. Million-Guiet was founded in 1855.

Martin Auctioneers, Inc. is very honored to have the opportunity to auction seventeen historical and deasscentioned Coaches, Carriages and Sleighs from the New-York Historical Society. Approxi-mately 10 of these Coaches and Carriages, mostly manufactured by Brewster & Co., were from the former Owner, Mr. Harris Fahnestock, 1869 to 1939. A member of the New York Coaching Club, he maintained his residence in New York City and Lenox, Massachusetts.
Also, Edward Victor Loew (1873-1950) was a former member of the New York Stock Exchange and an active sportsman. A noted enthusiast and champion “whip”, he was also a leader of the New York Coaching Club. Among many awards, he won the Koch Memorial Cup at the National Horse show in 1929.
From the Henry O. Havemeyer Family, well known coachman and sportsman of their era. Several carriages, including a Cut Under Basket Phaeton by Healy & Co. and a Bewster Spindle Side Governess Cart.
