Title Rymes Papers

ContentSummary This collection was deposited in the Marshall Library by Judith

Allen in January 1990. It comprises files generated byProfessor Thomas K. Rymes' project to collect and transcribenotes taken by students attending J.M. Keynes's Cambridgelectures in the early 1930's. The final result of the project wasthe book "Keynes's Lectures, 1932-35: notes of arepresentative student: a synthesis of lecture notes taken bystudents at Keynes's lectures in the 1930s leading up to thepublication of The General Theory" (1989) by Rymes. Thiswas published under the aegis of the Royal Economic Society, whilst publication of the Complete Works of Keynes was still inprogress. The acknowledgements section in the book outlinesthe history of Rymes' involvement. Rymes also completed acomplete edited transcript of the notes he used, a copy ofwhich is in the Keynes papers at King's College, Cambridge.

Summary Professor Austin Robinson actively collaborated with Rymesby acquiring for the Marshall Library as many sets of students'notes as possible. These notes, either originals or copies, arewithin the Rymes papers, as is correspondence concerningtheir deposit.

ContentSummary Sends a copy of his paper ["An Introduction to a Monetary

Theory of Employment"] which he prepared for Dr Hayek'sseminar at London School of Economics. They had difficultieswith the definitions of income and investment, also concept ofthe propensity to spend and re-establishment of equilibrium.

Summary Probably nothing new to Keynes in Bryce's paper, but hopeshe is interested in the way research students are adapting hisideas. Before he leaves the country for a couple of years, wishes to thank Keynes for pleasure derived frommembership of his Political Economy Club, and for hiskindness.

ContentSummary hanks him for his paper ["An Introduction to a Monetary

Theory of Employment"] which he thinks excellently done. Isastonished he has been able to convey so much in so short aspace. Is not surprised that his audience found it difficult, ascompression does not make the unfamiliar easier.

Summary Keynes finds it tiresome that his definitions were thoughtdifficult, since he feels he had gone into them atdisproportionate length. Thinks it an illustration of appallingstate of scholasticism of economists' minds which leads themto take leave of their intuitions. In his writing Keynes is tryingto arouse the reader's intuitions, so if he has none, the writeris helpless.
